I never thought I'll be giving this manga series so many 4 stars instead of 5 only because of the bad illustrations. I know Yoshihiro Togashi's health isn't perfect but still...

Finally, the climax to this arc has started... and still, way too much tell and not enough show.

I'm at a loss for what to say. This was so incredibly fast-paced and consuming. As soon as they began multiple things happened in the span of seconds. Togashi slowed things incredibly down, but still it all felt to action-packed. I was holding my breath for nearly the entire volume, and I've already read this! We got to see Zeno's powers, Netero's backstory, Shoot grow into a braver person, Gon's never-ending determination, Meruem be consumed with worry over Komugi, the Royal Guards feel devastated, and many other things that happened but these were just my favorites.
I wish I could continue reading, and as soon as I can, I will because I really love this entire arc, and I can't wait to see what's going to happen next.

We're now starting to get into the "nitty-gritty" of the final battles of the Chimera arc; with Morel facing off against Pouf, Knuckle, Shoot and Meleoron against Youpi, Netero and Zeno against Meruem... and soon-to-be-starting... Kil and Gon against Pitou! Hard to say how things are going so far, as while a couple of the battles have started... there hasn't been anyone mortally injured at this stage and really the battles are just getting started ;D

I loved getting to learn a bit about Netero's background (prior to becoming chairman) and I'm hoping for more flashbacks about him in the chapters to come, because I really don't feel that I know near as much about him as I want to XDD

Curious to see how things will continue in the next volume - and whether Kil and Gon's battle will be starting then c:

Chapter notes below for reference:

The longest 3 minutes in anime history. I always admire how this part of the series was shown. The scenes were stretch and particularly slow but in a good way. I don't think it can be shown in a better way than the author already had. Meruem also surprisingly showed us his unexpected side when he was seen hugging Komugi's unconscious body so tenderly. Gon is now going to the darker side with each passing minutes. This will be the slowest yet most intense battle!

Finally we're getting into it! It's a bit too wordy for my taste, despite how many pages there are without dialogue. There's so much to explain but it boils down to "he run left" or "he got angry", still I have to read paragraphs describing the exact intention of every brain cell as Killua turns his head right, oh no he turned his head right! Ahhhhhh! Yeah sure.

THIS VOLUME WAS INSANE. The way that everything is narrated in third person, the moments of The King having this sick half epiphanies, the fight with Youpi. It's all so cool. This was my favorite volume so far, and it's not close.

God damn, it just keeps getting better and better.

The charge on the palace is put into action, but everything is slightly fucked from the King's attachment to Komugi. Youpi is where Pitou should be, throwing Gon and Killua's plan off slightly. The King isn't in the throne room, but Netero and Killua's grandpa are able to locate him easily from the sky, with Netero kicking Pitou's ass a little in the process. Killua continues to grow as a character when he saves Ikalgo from two minor Ants. Gon continues to grow as a character when he is unfazed by the initial confusion of the old men's attack on the main palace, inspiring Shoot to strengthen his own resolve.

The thing with Gon is a bit tricky, as I can understand how some people might see it as being generic shounen manga boldness. If I may compare with JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, in the beginning of Vento Aureo, when Giorno keeps doing a bunch of things that impress Bruno's team. Gon's determination is much the same here, and I strongly enjoy it personally, but I'm kind of a sucker for this sort of thing....

****

EDIT (11/08/22): Someone on /a/ was dumping this volume from the invasion onward, and I was crying the entire time, reading in bed, my tears rolling down to my ears. This shit is amazing. (Though, as it happens, I'm still in Yorkshin on a re-read, so I'll end up reading this yet again in due time....)

****

EDIT (07/21/2024): Jesus. So, per my previous comment, I was on Yorkshin back in November of '22 during a re-read. I'm currently in my second reading of the manga. So, being in the Chimera Ant Arc now... I'm still in the same re-read as when I was on Yorkshin about four years ago. Ugh. Okay. The aim, after new chapters come out, is definitely to just blaze through everything a third time, in under a year!

Anyway, if I'm still listing fights, this volume is pretty simple: Knuckle, Meleoron, and Shoot versus Youpi. I guess we could count Netero smacking Pitou, since I've counting Gungi matches as "fights."

I love how intricately this battle is explained. It put some off, but explaining each character’s thought process goes so far towards making them feel fully realized. Because everyone’s thoughts are explained, nothing feels contrived or forced. You know precisely why each character did what they did in response to their plans being thrown off track. It could be overwhelming to piece together what each side knows about the other and the assumptions they have made about their enemy’s plans. But Togashi has done all of the lifting for the reader. He has put the incredible effort into defining each side’s own plans and what the expect the plans of their foes to be.

The art has taken a step up in quality her. The frequent use of full pages and dobike page spreads makes the action feel even more grand.

The battle begun :) the whole volume took place in a matter of few seconds!!! so intense!!! the back story of Netero was awesome!!! I didn't expect that he was going to include another one in his battle with the king and this one is Killua's Grandpa :) :) what happened to the little blind girl is very sad :( but that would make the king fight with all he got :)
The finale scene with a black eyed Gon was also great!!!
An Awesome!!! Volume!!! reading the next one NOW!!! :)

This book is good. Merum king of the chimera race has became more intuned with himself and the side and outlook on human race. His lust for killing and power has lowered. This has all came from playing a board game with komugi. As Gon, Killua , morel ,and knuckle.are setting up to separate the royal guards from the king. This plan is to let the most powerful one Netero to fight Merum for humanity.

BOSS BATTLE... is coming. We're getting there. As the days-long countdown elongates into seconds this volume spends half the time prepping for battle and checking in with the Royal Guards. Let's dive in.

- For past-less humanoid monsters, the Chimera Ants have compelling stories and motives. The fact that they were once human and are driven by motive gives them a relatability factor that, say, a zombie does not provide. The king and his guards are interesting in this way - Pouf is overly and dangerously dedicated to protecting the king (he scares me the most), Pitou is a fierce cat who embraces her feral instincts (I say it's a her - we need more females in this story), and Youpi, as is explained, is less logical than the rest though not one to be trifled with.

- The king, however, is coming into his own despite us having seen him do nothing but play a board game for his entire existence. He understands now that power absolute is the best form of power - that he can have anything when it is put to use. After Pouf's internal moaning about what it means to be a king, the king showed that he probably has enough resolve to run this entire planet. He shooed his guards away so that he could chill with the only person for whom he cares.

- While the volume seems to slow to bore as our heroes to an absurd amount of game-planning, one of the best twists so far in the series: SKY DRAGON RAINING DEATH FROM ABOVE. ...Is that? Oh yes. Netero has on the compression battle suit. And... ZENO!? Oh, the tables. Have they turned.

- The end of this volume is nuts: Youpi plays goalkeeper as the heroes try to dart to the palace's second floor. Morel entraps an emotionally wrecked Pouf. The SKY DRAGON attack hit Komugi, and the king, who remains surprisingly chill, essentially puts Pitou out of commission by having her perform puppet surgery. And Netero points Gon in the direction of said Pitou. WILL KITE BE AVENGED?!

I've got to admit at the start I was hoping the chimera ant stuff would wrap up. It's a friggin blast! I just feel that the series will lose a lot of traction once a foe this powerful is beaten. Besides, I miss Hisoka, the troupe and everyone else. Not that it's been boring, I'm as entertained as I was when all of this was developing. Seeing the culmination and a combination of hunters we have not seen before...Oh, man. Not to mention I've never seen this many two page spreads in a single manga before.

I thought it was pretty interesting that the narrative switched from being dialogue driven, as most manga are, to a third person omniscient - I think that's what it is anyway. Everything is happening down to the second and the change in form is warranted. Togashi needs to flip that switch and it works really well. It reminds me of the Princess Bride in a lot of ways, particularly the way it flows...

The more I sit on this the more I'm convincing myself that the series has not taken any steps back. It's moving forward. It's at a very rapid pace. Things have slowed down as it is now crunch time.

I am losing it.
I no longer know how I want this battle to turn out.
The King, no, Meruem, chose Komugi's (a nobody human) safety and well-being over his own. He chose to put himself in danger for her. I can't---
Thank heavens that it was Neferpitou who made it to him first and agreed to heal Komugi. I'm sure if it was Shaiapouf, he would have said "nooo, my duty is to protect you from harm, my King, blah blah blah" and he'd have surely lost his head to Meruem's anger and exasperation then.

Netero and Zeno teaming up to lead this final assault on the King's palace atop a DRAGON no less was so surprising. Now I understand why Netero hadn't felt the need to call more Hunter reinforcements. The old man still has a lot of fight and grit left in him after all.

The parallel other fights hold little interest for me at the moment even if I can see just how strong everyone has gotten and how dedicated they are in this final showdown. It's do-or-die now after all.

hunter x hunter is my favorite series. The chimera ant arc is my favorite arc in the whole series. In this volume, it explains what the team is up against. The four most powerful chimera ants in history. The King and his three servants are the most powerful beings in the world. the characters are preparing for war against these powerful beings. this book was really good and i felt the characters feelings of worrying or anxiety. The book explained how, when, where, and why they would attack. this is the build up for a greater volume or book.
