Cathedral: An Illness and a Healing

On the face of it Cathedral is most akin to Henderson’s Tower: Faith, Vertigo and Amateur Construction (FSG), a Thoreau-esque chronicle of building a tall structure on the grounds of his hilltop property in Maine. But Cathedral is more overtly a spiritual memoir like his Simple Gifts: One Man’s Search for Grace (S), a tribute to the pleasures of singing hymns.

I would give this more than 5 stars if I could. It is the best book I've ever read on coping with serious illness and finding a way through by building a "cathedral" and trusting in Jesus.

Henderson writes:" Thinking--the name of Jesus was all that was left to me. A fiction that story...the real power is that fiction--the narrative of a suffering, loving God-man."

He visits church when he's almost finished with radiation, " what I had left was the name of Jesus and the words' it's not about you'"
