Lady Olivia is the sister to a Duke who is friends with and employees Mr. James Averill as his solicitor. James and Olivia have been friends for a while but Olivia has harbored a secret for just as long; she loves James. As she is older now, Olivia hopes James will see her as more than just "the little sister". With James set to begin an archeological expedition in a couple weeks to Egypt for two years, Olivia decides it is now or never to make her move. She clandestinely follows James to the countryside for a chance at grasping her dream. As truths get revealed, class roles are tested, and love grows, Olivia and James learn who they truly are and want out of life.
This story delves in right away and I enjoyed that as it was engaging and exciting. This is part of a series but I definitely think it can be read as a standalone as the only thing I missed was how Olivia's brother Owen came to marry his wife; will be going back to read that one! The base of this story is Olivia believing she is in love with James and wanting to marry him. I liked how real James was with Olivia in the beginning, he recognized how the difference in their social classes could be a very real impediment. He never talks down to her but remarks how she has never had to want for anything in her life and maybe she doesn't quite understand what being married to a solicitor would entail. While Olivia does have her moments of being selfish and immature, she also knows pain and refuses to be dismissed so easily. I would have liked for the book to explore their class differences more but understand stories like this aren't really concerned about realism for it might get in the way of the fairy tale and I can certainly forgive that.
There is an ease to James and Olivia's dialogue and interactions that make reading about their relationship so pleasant. Olivia is forthright and brave with just enough of a hint of vulnerability to make you want to squeeze her hand as she faces the challenge of James. James has locked a bit of himself away for protection which stems from issues regarding his younger brother but finds he comes fully alive in Olivia's presence. It is when they are together and challenging each other that they develop to their full potential; Olivia realizes that she is capable of being more than James' wife and James learns that connections with people are what life is really about. The biggest problem I had with this book was towards the end when Olivia acts a bit out of character and runs away to solve a problem. This conflict was unnecessary dramatics and then resolved too quickly and easily with what felt like a shrug and hug. It seemed like the author felt there wasn't enough angst but the characters and story she crafted didn't work because of angst but rather their fun charm.
I was pleasantly surprised at how funny, charming, and sexy James and Olivia's relationship and intimate scenes were. Scandalous Summer Nights is a light regency read that will appeal to and please many a reader. I also can't wait for Olivia's quiet sister Rose to get her story with Charles the stablehand.

Lady Olivia Sherbourne has been in love with James Averill, her brother's solicitor and friend, for a decade, but the man is completely oblivious. She always thought she had time to make him notice her, make him fall in love, but that time is running out. James is on his way to Egypt. For two years. And Olivia finally takes off her gloves and decides to fight dirty.
This series certainly is hit-and-miss. I had in inkling I would particularly like this one, since I found Olivia to be too bratty and self-centered in the previous two books, but I thought that once she got her own book, her own story, she would grow on me.
Well, she didn't. She was a self-centered, spoiled brat for more than half her story, pushing and prodding, demanding to have it her own way, disregarding what others, namely the man she supposedly loved, might want and wish. And once she got it, she still wasn't satisfied. She truly reminded me of a spoiled child who, once she gets her toy, she doesn't want it anymore.
And, unlike the previous two novels, she didn't grow on me, because she didn't learn anything. She still got her way in the end without much suffering. She merely proved that all she needed was a fit and everything will be handed to her.
I would actually pity her hero, but I didn't much care for him either. He was bland a dull, without much character or agency, beyond catering to Olivia, her agenda, and her story. And I didn't buy his about face about her feelings either. It was too abrupt. It would've worked if he was infatuated from the start, but he actually noticed her only once she stopped flitting about him. Which makes him rather self-centered as well, come to think of it. He started pursuing her only once she stopped (at least outright) pursuing him.
In the end, I guess they pretty much deserved one another. And I didn't really buy the romance/love thing. They certainly worked better as friends with possible crushes on one another than lovers. But maybe that's just me and my general dislike of both of them.
I liked the supporting cast, though. Granted, they were relegated to the sidelines mostly, but it was still a pleasure seeing them and getting to know the new additions to the "family".

This book has the biggest jerk I have encountered in romance in a long while. I had known Olivia in other books and her forthrightness was at times a bit over the top but also refreshing. She had an honesty and innocence about her that I couldn't help but like even as she got herself into trouble. She was outrageous but also fun. James on the other hand didn't say much, treated Olivia like a child, and used the Lord's name in vain more often than he used any other words. He was a stick in the mud, lied to others, and was the one who was emotionally stunted. I hated reading about him and how he did everything to help himself and steal Olivia's light at the same time. After swearing more than three times in one page, I was done with this guy.
This was definitely because of the hero. It was easy to read and I liked that it was away from London, but alas, if you hate the hero and his constant swearing, it's a no go for me.

Scandalous Summer Nights is the third in Anne Barton’s Honeycote series. While I have not read the previous books, I did not find that this hampered my enjoyment of Summer Nights. This was an incredible sweet romance between an impulsive young woman and a man who is unwilling to give up his dreams for exploration (at least, not yet).
Lady Olivia Sherbourne has been infatuated with her older brother’s best friend, James Averill for a long time. Generally, she is an outspoken person; however, she has never voiced her attraction for James, until she learns that he’s set to travel to Egypt. Olivia is aware that she has to do something to keep him from leaving, unfortunately her efforts are rebuffed:
His blood was boiling – and not from desire. How dare Olivia spoil their friendship? Things would never be the same between them now. No more playful banter, no more gentle teasing. She’d ruined everything. Including his lifelong friendship with her brother. (p. 25)
While James is not unaware of Olivia’s charms, he would prefer that she not rock the boat. He’s heading off to Egypt and Olivia’s efforts are not going to change this. Until they do. Rather than let James go without a fight Olivia follows him into the countryside in the hopes that she will be able to convince him to see her as something more than her brother’s sister, as a woman in her own right. Adventure ensues, attraction flares, and both Olivia and James learn something about grown-up love (ie. compromise).
Summer Nights is an incredibly sweet story. There’s not much angst here; it’s a cute read, with a fun on-the-road romance element to it. I didn’t feel that there was a lot of meat to the story, I did like the light tone and the humour that was evident.
What I was not a fan of here was the bland characterization of James. Olivia had a personality; she was impetuous and bold, and occasionally flawed. Ultimately, Olivia had a presence and for me, she felt like a more fleshed out character. On the other hand, I thought James was boring. And even worse, I never really understood why he was suddenly in love with Olivia. James spent so much time resisting Olivia his capitulation seemed anticlimactic. I think in a romance you want to feel that the hero and heroine are on the same page, but here, I didn’t get that sense. Olivia had been desperately in love with James for ages, you couldn’t help but want this young woman to attain her unrequited love. She even tries her damnedest to make sure that James’ dreams are realized and he gets to go on that trip to Egypt. She’s willing to sacrifice her own happiness for James’ and while James does the same (to an extent) I always felt that Olivia did this more selflessly than James. What can I say? I expect perfection in my romance heroes not the flaws that are expected of real, not-fictional people.
Summer Nights is a nice, light romance. I didn’t find it deeply emotional, but that’s okay, not every romance has to seep emotion from it’s very pages, in fact, I like that Summer Nights is light. I think this is a book that will appeal to readers looking for a fun little adventure with a never-in-doubt happily-ever-after.

The younger sister in love with her brother’s best friend is a popular trope in historical romance, and while this one doesn’t exactly reinvent the wheel, I did find it to be an engaging and entertaining read. It plays out much how you would expect, but I enjoyed the journey, thanks primarily to the fact that Anne Barton crafted two very likeable leads and set up a romance between them that was easy to root for.
Lady Olivia has been in love with James her entire life. And though he has never looked at her as anything other than his friend’s little sister, she always thought she had time to change that. But now, he is planning an expedition to Egypt and she knows her time is running out. So she throws caution to the wind, puts her feelings out in the open, and begs for a kiss. It changes everything. Well, almost. It does prompt James to see her in a new light and it does make him desire her, but Egypt is his dream and there is no way Olivia will fit in to that dream. Of course, Olivia has other ideas. The book follows her efforts as she inserts herself into his life and his heart.
I was instantly enamored with how much Olivia is in love with James. Yes, there is the swooning over his muscled chest and whatnot, but I felt like there was more of a depth to her affection than a superficial crush. It shows, especially, as the story progresses. I also really like the ownership she takes over her future and her body. She goes after what she wants and she never wavers; and still it never feels creepy or stalkerish. Through her eyes, I could see why James has her heart, and I really appreciate that he can see the worth in her quickly as well. I appreciate that we don’t have to wait until the end for him to reciprocate her feelings or desire.
This is book three in the Honeycote series, but it works very well as a standalone. The plot moved quickly –and only once did I fear it was going to veer off course, but that subplot moved quickly and resolved itself. The book doesn’t really tread any new ground, but what it does, it does well. It’s sexy and sweet and I enjoyed it.

A standard contemporary historical romance. I know that sounds like a contradiction, but what I mean is that historical accuracy is thrown aside for the sake of what readers want in a romance. Though set in the early 1800s, the heroine has a 21st century mindset about everything from gender roles to civic responsibility. The hero's passion for exploring Egypt was born from the comfort of an afterlife that their culture inspires as if he has never been to church. Regardless of the influence Christianity and Catholicism had on people of that time, it is always stripped from secular romance novels.
And then there are the standard scenes. If the heroine ever gets naked in a body of water (bathing, swimming, etc.), the hero will manage to see her. If the heroine and hero are traveling in a coach, their chaperone will have reason to leave them alone together and naughtiness will ensue. The protagonists of previous novels will always appear to still be blissfully besotted with one another. I can't say that any of these things is wrong, because a romance novel is written to please fans of the genre, and this is what most romance readers want regardless of whether it is realistic or historically accurate. But for me, it limited my enjoyment to just the level of an average romance.

Waiting ten years for the man she loves to acknowledge her is long enough for Lady Olivia Sherbourne. Olivia decides to take matters into her own hands and follows the elusive James to force him to see her as the woman that she is. I enjoyed the fact that Olivia isn't really a damsel in distress. She is simply a woman who knows what she wants and sets out to get it. James wants to spare Olivia what he feels would be a step down for her if they were to become involved but Olivia is having none of that. Both Olivia and James are both strong willed people with noble hearts and good intentions. Neither are perfect and they both have to bend and make concessions in order for things to work between them.
Scandalous Summer Nights is a fun story laced with humor and sexiness. Olivia pulls some things on James that made me laugh out loud. When Olivia decides to actively pursue James she goes all out! Although this is book three in the Honeycote series, I read it as a stand alone with no problems.

I really like Anne Barton's writing style. It is funny without being silly, emotional without being heavy and steamy!
This book grabbed me right from the beginning and never let go. I liked James and Olivia and loved seeing familiar characters from the past books.
I didn't give the book 5 stars because I think Olivia's actions were a bit over the top and hard to believe. Even in a fictional book. I tried to ignore her TSTL moments and was almost successful until the end of the book when she does something monumental stupid. I understand her reasoning, but really?
I look forward to reading Rose's story and maybe even a book for Sophia.

En bref, une romance historique très agréable à lire. J'ai pris beaucoup de plaisir avec Olivia et James même si la première est un peu bornée et parfois gamine. Mais elle sait ce qu'elle veut, on ne peut pas lui enlever ça et elle fera tout pour l'obtenir. Quitte à poursuivre James de ses assiduités et à lui faire tourner la tête.

I liked this story - a bit long but nevertheless a good story.
I liked the change of pace - a woman going after a man for once and not waiting idly by for him to see her. I wish I had that much courage in real life.
I'm also glad that they both didn't give to their dreams and both got what they wanted and needed at the end.
I liked the change of pace - a woman going after a man for once and not waiting idly by for him to see her. I wish I had that much courage in real life.
I'm also glad that they both didn't give to their dreams and both got what they wanted and needed at the end.

Started off promising, became cute and then the heroine just became a total klutz. The attraction between them...didn't flow quite as naturally? I mean...it just happened, and I couldn't feel that it was real. After that, the plot just shifted to the heroine's father's secret and then I got totally bored. For once, I'm willing - Where's The Drama-Rama?

Always loved the story of the sister falling in love with her brothers best friend! The characters were fun and wild especially Olivia. Her unyielding love for James just adds even more spirit to her persona. Love conquers all, even Egypt

I had a lot of fun reading this book and the plot surprised me a lot more than I imagined it would. If you are looking for a historical romance that doesn't follow the usual pattern then this is the book for you.

Olivia, toujours amoureuse de James, le meilleur ami de son frère, va tenter le tout pour le tout quand elle apprend son prochain départ pour l'Égypte 😃
Il était temps que j'avance également dans cette série de romances historiques, puisque j'avais lu le 1er tome il y a presque 2 ans 😅
J'avais à la fois hâte de le lire, parce que j'adore les friends-to-lovers/petite sœur du meilleur ami, mais en même temps, j'avais un brin d'appréhension car Olivia n'était pas forcément mon personnage préféré 🙈
Au-delà de la jeune femme exubérante qu'on a rencontré dans les 1ers livres, on découvre finalement une demoiselle qui sait ce qu'il veut, fera tout pour l'obtenir, mais saura se remettre en question et corriger le tir quand elle se rendra compte qu'elle a mal agi 😊
James lui, il aura pratiquement fallu qu'on lui mette le nez dedans pour comprendre les sentiments qu'Olivia a à son égard 😅
Si cela va lui faire du bien, ça va aussi le questionner sur ce qu'il lui faut vraiment et ce dont il a besoin !
On avait déjà eu un bon aperçu de son caractère et ma lecture n'a fait que confirmer ce que je pensais de lui 😊
On passe de plus un très bon moment en leur compagnie, se comportant déjà comme un vieux couple marié, nous offrant aussi biens des dialogues romantiques que des scènes spicy, le tout dans cette campagne anglaise que j'aime tant 🥰
Comme dans toute série, on retrouve avec plaisir les personnages des livres précédents pour assister à leur évolution dans leurs vies maritales, et on aime aussi en rencontrer des nouveaux, comme l'oncle Humphrey 😃
Si je suis un poil déçue de la tournure des événements entre Olivia et James, j'ai apprécié l'épilogue et ce geste qu'aura Olivia envers son cher et tendre 🥰

Why have I not heard of Anne Barton before?!
Lady Olivia Sherbourne’s childhood crush on her brother’s friend has grown into a full blown infatuation that she can no longer ignore. She’s tried flirting, getting him alone and dropping massive hints, all in an effort to get him to see her as a woman. When she finds out he’s going on a two year expedition to Egypt, Olivia decides to take drastic measures, with drastic consequences.
Solicitor James Averill’s dream of going on an expedition to Egypt is finally within his grasp; all he has to do is tie up a few loose ends before his trip. He definitely does not need to be noticing his closest friend’s sister. Thinking that all he has to do to forget Olivia is leave for his exploratory trip three hundred miles away, James puts the lady out of his mind, until she shows up unannounced and starts a tavern brawl! Firmly set on escorting her home, James tries his best to resist the temptation Olivia presents even as Olivia sets out to show him why he should think twice about walking away from her.
I loved this story! I’ve become more and more picky with the historical romances that I read, especially with the heroines. It’s such a fine line between being somewhat historically accurate and having a heroine who is little more than a door mat or arm candy. Olivia was neither but I wasn’t always so sure about her. For the first few chapters I went from chuckling at her plucky attitude to cringing at her selfish and childish ideas. I was worried that Olivia was destined to be this spoiled, selfish, immature brat of a heroine that only saw things through rose colored glasses instead of how they really were. However, after some stern and truthful words from James after she pulls a particularly stupid stunt for which she refused to take responsibility, Olivia started to use her brain for something other than half witted schemes that were reserved more for little girls. Olivia proved herself to be quite intelligent and strong after that.
Truth be told though, I identified more with James. I understood how badly he wanted to go to Egypt and why and I felt the same disappointment mixed with anger and resentment when that dream was in danger of being taken away by someone else. I’ve never been a fan of manipulation, no matter if it’s disguised as love. I was a little put off by the fact James’ lifelong dream of going to Egypt was put in jeopardy all because Olivia decided she wanted a him as a husband. He hadn’t even considered Olivia as a wife in the beginning of Scandalous Summer Nights and it was because of Olivia’s constant presence in his day to day activities that caused him to risk what he had wanted. Yes, dreams and goals do change sometimes but I just felt that it should have been 100% up to James to make that choice, not have someone else interfere and all but steal it away with her impetuous nature.
Aside from a few issues with the heroine, I enjoyed Scandalous Summer Nights. I started off being uneasy about Olivia’s maturity level and intelligence but author Anne Barton didn’t waste time in giving her a reality check. James’ love of Egypt and its ancient history was what got me to bond with him. I understood his fascination and thirst for knowledge of the past. He was a kind, funny and protective character. Interestingly enough, I noticed that secondary characters didn’t play too much into the story. Scandalous Summer Nights pretty much isolated James and Olivia through most of the story in order to give them time to really get to know one another.
Final Verdict: Anne Barton is a lovely addition to my "Catch Up" list, and as soon as I can, I'll be purchasing her previous books.

Oh, Olivia, I have also felt the blood-pumping, throat-closing angst of unrequited young love. So when you decided to express yourself to James, I was worried. In real life, things could turn very embarrassing. Luckily, you are stubborn and brave; also, this is a romance novel.
Olivia leads James out of a crowded ballroom and onto a private terrace to tell him about her love. James turns her down in a way that leaves them still friendly, it really couldn’t have gone better. But then Olivia kisses him. It turns out that James, who is a lawyer and a scholar, an analytical sort, can’t exactly control himself around Olivia. He is surprised by the kiss, but then he enjoys it. As a friend of the family, though, he decides that it’s best for everyone if he avoids Olivia so such things won’t happen again. Off he goes to the country.
Olivia does not take no for an answer when it comes to James. Many women would have tucked their tails and moved on, but not her. She tracks him down in the country, chaperoned only by her maid. James is flattered, and even pleased to see her, but then he thinks of her brother, and of his expedition, and turns her down again.
By this point, I was worried that Olivia was too infatuated. At some point, a woman just has to accept reality, right, instead of dwelling on the fantasy? Luckily, Olivia does have a moment of self-reflection.
“I can’t have all my dreams wrapped up in someone else. I need to accomplish something for myself. How can I expect someone as worldly as [James] to respect me when I have no real passion of my own?” {Kindle location 1265]
Plot circumstances then conspire to keep Olivia and James in the same location for a while, allowing them really get to know one another. It turns out that Olivia’s love is only partially superficial. She really does admire everything about James. He, in turn, opens up to Olivia and admires her ability to always find the bright side in unfortunate situations. And he says this: “I’d like to remove your chemise. With my teeth.” Please excuse me while I die.
There is also a scene with a river which made me think of a certain scene in Pride and Prejudice (the Colin Firth version). Sure, that’s a dirty trick, but I can’t imagine anyone not enjoying the mental picture of James dripping wet. Even a proper lady like Olivia can’t help but admire his squeezable backside.
Where was I? It doesn’t matter. You’ll enjoy this book for its plucky, optimistic heroine, its honorable, sexy hero, and the good times that they have together outdoors.

Olivia was spoiled, indulged and much loved but she wanted more than what was expected of her. After all, her brother married "beneath" himself, why couldn't she? And really how far "beneath" her can her brother's best friend be, really? Of course Olivia is the only one who feels this way. Why even James, the love of her life, just doesn't get it. He loves her, she knows he does, really.. but he just won't acknowledge it. Now he has declared that he is off to Egypt to discover it's secrets and won't be home for TWO YEARS. This simply will not do. So Olivia, spoiled darling that she is, devises a plan... which of course goes completely haywire..
James Averill has dreams of his own and it's not to follow through on his secret lust for his best friend's much younger sister. It's not to allow her youthful fantasies to develop into adult sin.. Nope it's to discover what he can about Egypt's past. He's an archeologist at heart. Now if Olivia will just stop throwing herself at him, her gorgeous, beautiful, funny, sensual self at him. All will be well.
Olivia and James have walls to topple and it's not Hadrian's. They have to decide if being together can actually happen. And what about James' dreams? Should he give up everything he has planned for just because he marries Olivia and she deserves a better life? It's a hard choice for a man who has made himself what he is by using his brains..
Olivia pushes and pushes until she realizes that ooops maybe she pushed in the wrong direction. Maybe she made the wrong choice. Maybe James will resent her.. Now what should she do?
A fun read, a pleasant read but not a spectacular oh my gosh I must read, read. This story lacked the impact of the first two books in the Honeycote Series but still left a good feeling. I think any historical romance reader will enjoy this book but I do suggest that you read the first two books in the series first. This one lacks their fire and depth but tells the story of characters that caught our attention in earlier books.

When I saw “Scandalous Summer Nights” by Anne Barton I jumped at the chance to read it. I really love historical romance. I also love the friends falling in love with each other story line. I had never read Anne Barton before so I was eager to discover another historical romance writer.
I can honestly say that I gave this book a fair chance. I read it and put it down a couple of times but I pushed through. But it just did not work for me. First, our heroine- Lady Olivia Sherbourne. I can only describe her as a self-absorbed, entitled, spoiled brat. Wow! It’s been a while since I disliked a heroine like her. First, I wanted to give her the benefit of the doubt. She has loved James Averill secretly for many years. James is her brother’s good friend and has only viewed Olivia as his best-friends sister. When Olivia discovers that James is about to embark on an adventure she starts to despair. She decides to confess her feelings for James at a party that they are both attending and kisses him. The kiss doesn’t lead to James falling in love with Olivia and just leads her back to the party. Olivia returns and she locks herself in her room and is too depressed for life. So, I thought, ok, I’m hanging in there… When she learns that James is leaving London she chases after him. They meet at an inn where James feels responsible for her.
James was a good hero but I really wanted him to grow a backbone. He was not of the same class as Olivia and felt that this would be a burden for them. He tried to help her realize that he could never give her the type of life that she was used to. James has always dreamed of going to Egypt and made arrangements to take care of his family so he could fulfill his dream.
Overall, this was an ok story. The story did start to unravel 60% of the way through the book but honestly I was not invested in the characters. Olivia eventually matures a little but I was really over her. James seemed a little flat at times and I really wished he left the heroine and went off to Egypt. I really had a problem with the heroine and her selfishness. Instead of wishing James the best she sets out to change his dream of going to Egypt because she loves him. I guess this means not having any consideration for his feelings. The author had some surprises in store along the way that were unexpected. Although I didn’t love this book I do plan to read more by this author.

I guess this means not having any consideration for his feelings. The author had some surprises in store along the way that were unexpected. Although I didn’t love this book I do plan to read more by this author.

J’avais aimé les deux précédents tomes de cette saga et j’avais hâte de découvrir le personnage d’Olivia qui semblait avoir une forte personnalité dans ces deux tomes. Mais pourtant, j’ai été déçu par ce tome par rapport aux deux autres.
On suit donc l’aventure d’Olivia, l’une des deux sœurs d’Owen, le héros du tome 1. Celle-ci est folle amoureuse depuis toujours du meilleur ami de son frère, James. Elle hésite à se déclarer et lorsqu’elle apprend qu’il compte partir pour l’Egypte, elle se jette à l’eau.
Quand j’ai vu James la repousser, je me suis dit que la mise en place d’une relation allez prendre pas mal de temps. Or, pour moi c’est trop rapide, James change trop vite d’avis au sujet d’Olivia. Et puis, il faut dire qu’il passe pas mal de temps à se donner du plaisir, j’ai eu plus l’impression d’être dans une romance érotique que dans une romance historique.
Cette histoire manque aussi de rebondissements. Dans les deux précédents tomes, il y avait une menace au-dessus de la tête de nos héroïnes, le chantage pour Annabelle et le tableau pour Daphné. Or, ici il n’y a rien qui mette en danger Olivia, si ce n’est que James n’est pas noble.
Mais cette histoire se lit quand même très vite, et on reste passionné par les aventures de James et Olivia même si on connait déjà la fin comme dans toute romance. Mais c’est une romance qui fait rêver, comme si le conte Cendrillon était revisité mais ici on inverse les rôles, c’est le garçon qui joue le rôle de Cendrillon.
Olivia est une jeune femme qui sait ce qu’elle veut, et je l’admire pour cela même si l’amène à faire des choses sans réfléchir sous l’impulsion de ses sentiments. Par contre je ne sais pas trop quoi penser de James, il est un peu trop plat et change trop vite d’avis. Et je trouve dommage qu’on ne voit que très peu Annabelle, Owen, Daphné et Rose.
Il y a une chose que j’apprécie plus que tout dans ces romans, c’est la découverte de l’Angleterre à l’ère victorienne. Ici, grâce aux péripéties de nos héros, on découvre la campagne anglaise que l’on peut très bien s’imaginer grâce aux descriptions.
En résumé, même si j’ai passé un bon moment, j’ai trouvé cette romance sans originalité. Par contre, je lirai avec plaisir le prochain tome qui sera normalement consacré à Rose, la jeune sœur d’Owen et Olivia. Un personnage qui m’intrigue car on ne la connait que très peu, et si c’est une romance, je ne vois pas qui.

It's finally Olivia and James's story in the third book of the Honeycote series (which I quite adore)! Olivia has loved James for ten long years but it seems James has never gave much thought to it (or at least he knows better than to try and woo his best friends's little sister). But that's all about to change when Olivia decides enough is enough and makes her move.
So yup, that right there basically described the entire book and their relationship.
I'm usually a sucker for these kinds of stories because I just love watching the I'm-never-gonna-fall-in-love hero just get taken down a peg or two by love. Sorry buddy, you really had no chance, good effort though. Olivia and James were quite cute together, they ended up complimenting each other well - definitely the opposites attract kinda couple.
Olivia started out a bit reckless and just too head-over-heels in love with James, but I loved that as the story progressed we actually got to see her learn to love herself first and realize that she didn't need a man to be happy. That being said, James is definitely worth loving. Why you ask? Because he never babied or belittled Olivia and always gave her the chance to prove herself. That's my kind of hero.
And of course on the road to love, because Olivia was never one to take anything lying down, there's a string of mishaps and mayhem (including a tavern fight, sprain ankle, and a broken carriage axle)! Though the events didn't always turn out the way I hoped, the ending was still very HEA. Overall, it was a fun addition to the Honeycote series and I definitely can't wait for Rose's story.

A charming, engaging historical romance, Scandalous Summer Nights was a lovely read. It was sweet, enjoyable, and I really liked it.
Olivia was a likable heroine. She was impulsive, yes, but she was also determined enough to fight for what she wanted. Occasionally, she got ridiculous ideas in her head, but they were always meant with good intentions. My only issue with her was a small one. James was keeping a letter that was written from her late father to her as a favor to her brother. He was meant to keep it a secret, but he knew he had to tell her. And, he tried, several times, insisting that he had to tell her something important, but, of course, she would brush it off until later because they were distracted by...other things. But, when she finally found out, she was angry with him. It annoyed me a bit because he had distinctly told her that he had to tell her something, so she knew he had every intention of telling her. However, she did get over it quickly, so it was only a minor annoyance and it didn't keep me from really liking her character.
James was also great. Somewhat oblivious to what was right in front of him, but a wonderful hero all the same. He was very sweet, very loyal to the people he cared about, and a genuinely honorable and good man. He was just adorable and I really liked him as well.
The romance was lovely. Olivia and James were great together. They were good friends at the beginning (though Olivia was longing for more) and, as James started to realize that his best friend's younger sister wasn't a little girl anymore, they're relationship deepened and changed into more. It was very sweet and they were obviously perfect for each other. And, of course, they had some hot chemistry that turned the heat up a few times. I thought they were a wonderful couple.
The plot was fast paced and I was engaged the entire way through. This book was witty, charming, and just an overall delightful read. I enjoyed the story and the ending was lovely.
Scandalous Summer Nights was a fantastic historical romance that I really enjoyed. It was sweet, engaging, and just wonderful. Romance lovers, this is a book you'll want to check out.

Scandalous Summer Nights is a highly entertaining book, but I wouldn't expect anything less when it comes to Lady Olivia Sherbourne. I adore Olivia, because she's candor and impulsive. A bit tenacious when it comes to getting what she wants. She has set her eyes on James Averill. Now James is the opposite of Olivia. He tends to be thoughtful and cautious. During the story, it explains a bit why he's that way. Of course it deals with James family secret. However, he isn't the only one to have a family secret, but Sherbourne's family secret isn't reveal to them until the middle of the story. Boy was that one a doozy.
So, we have impulsive Olivia trying to get James to realize he needs to stay and marry her. I know that sounds positively silly, but she's a girl on a mission. Basically, she risks her reputation in order to capture James attention. She finally does, but then she realize how selfish she was acting. When James is with her grasp, she starts to question her impulsive behavior. At the same time, James realize that he's thankful for Olivia's behavior.
I absolutely loved this story, because it was entertaining. You see these two people grow closer together. It wasn't smooth sailing right away, but it took sometime for James to see what he had the whole time. Olivia is just so darn cute, when she tries to fix the wrong, but it becomes a huge mess. I could spout every detail why I loved this story.
Yes, Olivia is silly and impulsive, but she does have a good heart. James needs a little help to realize he needs a little adventure in his life. Some may view the story outlandish, but I loved the story.
Favorite Line:
"You burst into my life like a hummingbird, zipping here and there, demanding more from me. Challenging everything I thought I knew about myself and making me realize that the greatest treasures do not come from the past by from the present. From the friends and family who have shared in our lives made them richer. With you, life will always be an adventure, and every chapter will be sweeter than the last. I am the luckiest man alive to have you as my wife."

This is the first book I’ve read by Anne Barton but it won’t be my last. I definitely need to go back and read the previous books in the series, When She Was Wicked, Once She Was Tempted and the novella, To All The Rakes I’ve Loved Before. Although I started with book three in the series I could easily follow the storyline since enough background information was given.
It was a different approach that there were definitions at the start of quite a few chapters – each with a double meaning and a sentence to explain the meaning not related to archeological terms. James was planning to be away for two years by joining an expedition in Egypt to fulfill his desire to go on a dig and on an adventure. Much of the misunderstandings between James and Olivia stem from his upcoming plans.
This often steamy and quickly read historical romance begins in the early 1800’s in London and then continues in various towns quite a ways outside of it. Lady Olivia and James were friends since childhood since he was friends with her brother, Owen. He watched her grow up and didn’t know she’d been in love with him for ten years and measured all men against him which is why she is still unmarried. Olivia tended to be forward and not always think things through before acting and would get mixed up in trouble and sometimes come to harm as a result. Nevertheless she was always full of surprises, acting unexpectedly and creating havoc wherever she went. Oftentimes she was NOT a lady! Watching James realize his attraction but not wanting or able to act on it at various times throughout put him and Olivia at crossroads. Seeing them draw together and then apart over and over while fighting their chemistry was at times fun and other times heartbreaking. There was family, friends, servants, laughter, tears, romance, love, heartache, surprises and beautifully described clothing and scenery. The dynamics between Olivia and her family and James and his was totally different as was their upbringings. There was the requisite happily ever after that had a nice twist and wonderful closure. I look forward to reading Olivia’s sister, Lady Rose’s story, in One Wild Winter’s Eve.
