The Mowbray Sisters #3

Sunset at Embthwaite Farm

Rate this book
When Anna Mowbray receives a curt message from one of her estranged daughters that her ex-husband–a silent and surly Yorkshire farmer –is dying, she realizes it’s time to return home. Twelve years ago when her daughters were mostly grown, Anna walked away from Embthwaite Farm with no plan except to preserve her sanity and to find a ray of light to cling to.

But going home is harder than even Anna imagines. Her daughters are miles away from forgiveness and rebuff her every overture of help and communication, and her ex, who knows why she left, doesn’t even want to speak to her. But Anna’s determined to face her demons, make amends, and reconnect with her family.

What she doesn’t expect is kindness from her neighbors and understanding and warmth from the handsome widower James Adams, as well as his warm and welcoming daughter Jane. As Anna grieves her old life and tries to come to terms with the mistakes and hurts from the past, can she create a future where there’s room for a family around her… and the possibility of love?

We are back in Yorkshire for book three in this beautiful series, we have met Rachel and Harriett now we get to meet their mother Anna, Anna walked out twelve years ago and her and her daughters are estranged but when she gets a call from Rachel to let her know that their father is dying, Anna decides it is time to go and make amends with her daughters it is time to open up about why she left all those years ago.

Arriving home to the farm is very hard neither daughter seem to be giving an inch on getting to know their mother and the last thing Anna needs is stress, will she get them to listen and give her forgiveness and how are her daughters going to react to what she has to tell them and of course there is their father Peter although very unwell he is not happy that Anna is back either.

Anna is not going anywhere till they sort out their problems but she does think that staying at the farmhouse is maybe a bit too much and finds herself a lovely house to rent, here she makes friends with her young neighbour Jane and she meets her landlord and Jane’s father James Adams and the instant spark is something that Anna has never felt before, could she find true love and happiness now after all of these years? And how will things go with her daughters? Will they find happiness together again?

This is a lovely story and series actually, beautifully written with such a gorgeous setting and the cover is brilliant and the characters are such lovely people, I do highly recommend this one, it is filled with emotion and I loved it and now we have another book to look forward to this one is sure to course some sparks to fly. Don’t miss this one a must read.

My thanks to the publisher Tule for my digital copy to read and review.

This was a bittersweet and touching book. It picks up directly where book two in the series, Christmas at Embthwaite Farm ended. Rachel and Harriet, living on Embthwaite Farm in northern Yorkshire, are facing the death of their father, Peter. Their estranged mother Anna has returned to assist in caring for her ex-husband and helping guide her daughters through this difficult time. The young women aren’t making it easy for her, holding a grudge against her for leaving many years earlier, feeling completely abandoned.. Anna does what she can, trying to reconnect with her daughters. As she works her way through regret and guilt, trying to find her way toward redemption and a new acceptance, she crosses paths with a handsome and charming man with some difficulties of his own..

This is a heartwarming and heart wrenching tale of marital infidelity, emotional abuse, depression, mental health, grief, community, family, and friendship. It’s beautifully written with engaging characters. It’s also a tale about later-in-life romance, and I dare any middle-aged or older woman not to fall in love with James.

This is the third book in this series, and while I think it could be read as a standalone, reading Christmas at Embthwaite Farm might make the situations in the book more understandable. Sunset at Embthwaite Farm does end on a cliffhanger or two; although, most questions brought up in the book are answered. The major cliffhanger is the set up for book four in the series.

I’m enjoying this series and look forward to whatever the next installment in the series brings.

I received an advanced reader copy of this book from the publisher, Tule. I thank all involved for their generosity, but it had no effect on this review. All opinions in this review reflect my true and honest reactions to reading this book.

Kate Hewitt excells at writing angsty, emotional stories and Sunset At Embthwaite Farm fits that mould perfectly. I loved that Anna and James were in their fifties. It’s fantastic seeing authors taking on older protagonists and giving them stories that reflect the fact that we are not dead because we are a little more exoerienced in the game of life. Anna made a fabulous heroine. Back at Embthwaite Farm to try to reignite a relationship with her adult daughters and help them care for her dying ex-husband Peter, Anna has a difficult back-story and plenty to overcome in terms of building trust. I really felt for her and that feeling grew as her story unfolded. Thank goodness James came into her life! A widower with an adult daughter, James too has his issues to overcome, but he is just perfect for Anna and given the horrors of her marriage, I felt like he was just what she deserved to make up for all she’d endured fkirst time round. This story is beautifully set in north Yorkshire, with the ruggedly beautiful scenery providing a lovely backdrop. The characters are all fabulous and the story just gripped me and held me throughout. It’s all about healing, seizing the day and making the most of second chances. I loved it!

This book will make you laugh, cry and capture your heart. Anna Mowbray returns to Embthwaite Farm after twelve years after receiving a message from her daughter that her ex husband is dying. Anna and her daughters have complicated relationships and watching their struggles and the complex family dynamics was so intense it draws you in. Kate delves into a multitude of issues with sensitivity and empathy that gives the reader an understanding of what Anna was facing and why she made the decisions that she did. James Adams and his daughter are introduced into the story, Anna rents a home next door to James’s daughter Jane and they immediately hit it off. James and Anna’s developing relationship is slow and steady, they both have so much baggage between them that they both have doubts and fears that they’re dealing with. This is the third in The Mowbray Sisters series and it will capture your heart from the beginning with the complex relationships that are slowly rebuilt, the secrets uncovered and the sadness of watching someone you love/loved slip away. I can’t wait for the next book in this gorgeous series.

The third book in what I now know will be a four book series.

Nearly twenty years ago Anne Mowbray walked out on her farmer husband and two teenage daughters, she's kept in touch with the oldest Rachel through desultory periodic lunches but her youngest daughter Harriet refused to speak to her. But when Rachel calls to let Anne know that her husband is dying she feels compel to return to Yorkshire to support her daughters, even if they don't seem to want her help.

The last thing Anne expects to find when she returns to Yorkshire to care for her dying husband is to find love, but as two fifty-somethings life is never straightforward, and is it even appropriate to be dating someone new while your estranged husband is slowly dying?

I liked this book the best of the three so far, perhaps because Anne is my age and beyond the childish histrionics of Rachel and Harriet, also the two male love interests Ben and Quinn from the previous books (who in my opinion are drawn with a very broad brush and therefore slightly two dimensional) are less evident.

I received an ARC from the publisher Tule for an honest review.

Sunset at Embthwaite Farm by Kate Hewitt
Love this story because it surround many generations and ages of characters.
Anna has been summoned to the family house. She had just left one day leaving the two girls and her husband Peter. He's dying and soon. She thought she'd go to help out but the daughters are not very welcoming nor her ex. They've not seen or heard from her in 14 years. She visits with a neighbor and is very comforted as to what she needs to tell the girls. They do form a bond after many discussions and she is able to help them out more. There are secrets and mysteries that come to light along the way.
She travels back to her house to get a few things and meets James. Love how they interact as both are singles now.
This is first I've read of this series and learn enough about the past to make it an enjoyable read. Lots of travel, love, grief and how to survive it, helping others and having fun, twists and turns.
Received this review copy from the publisher and this is my honest opinion.

Oh, my, what an absolutely lovely story! Sunset at Embthwaite Farm by Kate Hewitt at first look is the finale in the family saga of the Mowbray women. By the end, you know differently. This realistic women’s fiction story has a dose of romance, more than its share of sorrow and a heaping helping of explosive reveals.

This author has the gift of writing heartfelt, beautiful stories with unforgettable, loveable and at times not so lovable characters. The Mowbray women are characters that the reader can identify with as their story progresses. Life is difficult and often messy which these characters have lived through fully. Now I can hardly wait to see what happens next.

An ARC of the book was given to me by Tule Publishing which I voluntarily chose to read and review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

In book three of this bittersweet series Anna returns to Embthwaite Farm, a place she left 12 years ago for her own sanity. Her ex-husband Peter is dying. The emotional, beautiful prose brings the reader to the heart of the human condition as Anna and her two daughters , Rachel and Harriet make peace with Peter and each other. Anna finds herself able to move on from her past and embrace a new romance with a widower James. I look forward to reading the next in the series to see how their relationship progresses and how the cliffhanger is resolved. This can be read as a stand alone but I highly recommend reading the previous two -you don't want to miss a moment of this engaging series. I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

A mother returns to her former home when called back by her estranged daughter as her ex-husband is dying. Her relationship with her two daughters is deeply strained due to her departure twenty years ago, leaving no letters as to why. Her return is her chance to reconnect with her daughters but there is unsurmountable anger and resentment. As the three women navigate through their past, she meets a wonderful widower who challenges her to love again. It is a tense yet delightful story of love on many levels.
