A good read. It started slow. The plot and characters were well written. Would liked to read more about the steampunk Civil War. Many of the sketches were good a few were not. The mine in the title was not given much detail. The romance was nice.

This is a steampunk adventure set in the American West, and in an alternate time stream wherein the Civil War doesn't get started until 1888. That means there's been time for technology to reach the level of dirigibles and artillery that is even larger and deadlier than what was used in real life. It was an entertaining read, and the two lead characters are both off the beaten path in terms of the steampunk and the romantic paradigms (if steampunk can be said to have one). The derring-do would h ...more
You’ve gotta love a good steampunk western, and Mark Bondurant’s debut novel certainly delivers. The pace is a bit leisurely in the first half, and a couple artifacts from previous versions of the story occasionally pop up, but on the whole I really enjoyed this one. I received my copy in exchange for an honest review through the Goodreads FirstReads program.

Welcome to Steampunk World. I am a steampunk neophyte, and didn't quite know what to expect, my fuzzy conception of steampunk being over conceptualized computers and other gadgets.

I did some research and learned more about it. For those of you who are like me and lack being up to speed with this stuff, steampunk today means anachronistic steam technology in a time which did not have it. The plots therefore are basically alternate history kinds of stories, where some basic concept is historicall

The story is full of action! You never get bored because there is always something happening or someone getting into trouble. Sometimes the action happens way to fast... and since there isn't much dialog you may get lost a bit. Regarding the characters, I liked Kay. She had a strong personality and was a true fighter, but I didn't like Deke. He never thought things through and was a bit stupid sometimes. Who in their rigth mind goes on a "roadtrip" around America while there is a war going on? M ...more

A.M.A.Z.I.N.G! I love the story, the writing, the end, the beginning, everything! I like how in the beginning there are like 2 stories and how at 1 point they come to one story. I also really enjoyed the romantic love part of the story. And oh my goodness, the ending like wauw the last page I wauw don't know how to say it... It was wonder full! For me personaly the beginning of the book (to when the story like really started) was a little to long. But still I liked it. People really must read th ...more

I received The Rose of the West from Goodreads Giveaways. The story revolves around Kay and Deke, seventeen year olds with very little family. It is the story of how they came to meet in the Wild West and takes place during the Civil War. To be honest it took me quite some time to really get into the story. I found the first hundred pages to be fairly slow. The main characters meet in chapter thirteen and from that point on the story really picked up. By the end of the book I ended up enjoying t ...more

This was a very entertaining read. It was my first steampunk novel and I wasn't sure what to expect. The steampunky parts blend into the story quite naturally and I like the way the book starts as two different storylines accompanying the two main characters on their way to meet each other. The characters are perhaps a little stereotype, but nevertheless I like all of them and it was fun to join them on their wild ride through the West. The love story is very sweet.

A fast paced, thrilling adventure ride through a place and time I don't read about often, but should! I enjoyed it thoroughly! You really get a great sense of the characters and their surroundings. I also appreciated the strong female characters, who were always underestimated by the men and always outsmarted them. I was so excited to win a signed copy! Thanks so much Mark Bondurant and Goodreads! I would definitely read another one of his books.

A wonderful fast paced read that embraces the recklessness of youth and holds you captive for the whole wild ride.
