I really liked the sound of this from the blurb, but after Prince Veern met Hellion, I got kind of lost with story and felt it didn't really take me where I wanted to go.

I must admit, I have not read many books in this genre and this was an excellent one to read! I found it difficult to put down and it was far more interesting than I had imagined.

This book was an engaging read from the beginning. It opens up to Prince Veern running for his life being chased by Orcs. As he continues on his journey he is taken captive and then rescued by the very clan he was looking for. Hellion's clan and the leader of the free people.

The story opens with Prince Veern riding to get help for his father against the evil Sage of Dagorath. During his journey to find the Free People and their leader, Hellion, he crosses the path of the vampire clan and learns the history between his father and the surrounding land.

This was an enjoyable read as the story and character progression was great. I cheered for Hellion and his family when they struggled against the forces of evil and felt for them when their history is told to Veern.

Fire At Dawn is my book so this isn't a review. Instead, it's more of a "get acquainted" post. Fire At Dawn is the first book in the Trials of the Clans trilogy. It introduces the world to Hellion and Fire, leaders of the Clans. The story of their love for each other and family sets the basis for the complex attack by their oldest enemy.
When a traitor brings word of a dark secret Hellion has, the evil Sage sets her plan in motion. Fire At Dawn is the first book in the Trials of the Clans trilogy. It introduces the world to Hellion and Fire, leaders of the Clans. The story of their love for each other and family sets the basis for the complex attack by their oldest enemy.

The easiest way to do this is to attack Hellion's oldest friend. Once her army is in motion, it is literally the unstoppable force versus the immovable object.
The Trials of the Clans takes a look at the world around us and drops it squarely into the strange yet familiar world that our heroes live in. There are the positive things we find in our own lives such as love and strength from the family that holds us together. There are the negative forces that assault us daily, like sexism, racism, anger issues and deceit. The characters are thrust into situations where they must find a way for their positives to win the day over the negatives.
My readers have told me that my world building skill is precise and well-thought. They also tell me that my characters are extremely personable to the point of feeling real emotions for them. This to me was the best compliment I could ever get as this trilogy was almost 20 years in the making. These characters are very real to me and as a writer, I found myself in areas that broke me down after writing scenes. When I read, I expect strong character development. If you don't have that bond with the characters, how can you care what happens to them? My personal quote on writing is simply that, the measure of a book is in the depth of its characters. If you feel the same way, I invite you to come and meet Hellion, Fire and the rest of the Clans.
On the weekend of May 17-18-19, Our Write Side will be continuing the fantastic CyberCon that was started by my very dear friend Angela B. Chrysler. The new group, headed by Tim Bateman will be hosting the event, a 3 day online festival of books, writers, and the lunacy that is so often associated with them. Of course, I will be a part of that lunacy.
There will be cyber-booths for you to meet the writers and ask questions about their books, styles, and so forth. There will be contests, video panels on writing subjects, and so many other fun things to do for both readers and writers. Stop by and look for my booth. We'll chat and I'll tell you all my inner secrets. OK, not all of them, but we'll have fun anyway.

Ed Ireland was born in Philadelphia on September 29, 1954. In January of 1955, the hospital he was born in was torn down. Presumably, they didn’t want anything like that happening again. His adolescence was shaped in Catholic school where the proper use of the common language was the only thing that mattered to the short but strong nuns.
