The story started at a very slow pace. I kind of groaned when I realized that the heroine has insta-love-syndrome. I mean the story just felt like anything else around there. I asked myself, "What does this book have that makes it stand out or different?" I tried to find something but I didn't.

I didn't fell for the male lead, Ben. And I will tell you that is very much unusual. I mean, almost every YA book I read made me wi

First Impression is a spooky paranormal mystery with a side of sweet romance. I was hooked after only the first sentence, which is supernatural in itself because I have never fallen for a book that fast. It’s the best first line ever.

“I watched for the owl with the Hogwarts letter to appear on my 11th birthday, but he never did.”

How could anyone not be intrigued by that line?

We follow our main character, Chira, to school the next day where she meets a brand new student, Ben. She’s got instant fe

I received a copy of this book to review for my stop on the blog tour found at Donnie Darko Girl.

First Impression is a layered mystery with the paranormal mixed in and characters I quickly became invested in. I was instantly hooked from the very beginning - there was no question I was going to love this book.

The story began with Chira showing Ben, a new transfer to her school, around. He's mysterious and doesn't speak much in the beginning while Chira finds herself attracted to him. Sometimes

“First Impression (Shadow Maven #1)” by Pauline Creeden is a wonderful paranormal read for young adults.
Chira, our heroine, is the only poor girl in a school of rich kids, but she is intelligent and hard-working and has one good friend. When she is charged with showing new boy Ben around, she has a feeling she knows him already. He certainly has a mystery or a secret about him.
Several of the youngsters meet up to go to a haunted school building and things take a turn for the worse then. Shortly

First Impression is book 1 in Pauline Creeden’s new, A Shadow Maven Paranormal series. It is a fast read that is full of twist and turns.

Teenage characters are sometimes hit or miss with me but with this story I really liked them. They all seem genuine and realistic and not too full of angst and drama. Chira is quite, loyal, and wishing for a little magic in her life. Ben is mysterious and has an old world charm about him as he battles the forces of evil with his gifts.

Amazing Story!Pauline Creeden is a superb stoyteller! I couldn't put the book down, it was like it had a hold over me the min I picked it up. the scenes were so fantastic and the mystery so intriguing! I am usually able to figure out who has done it before the end of the book but this one blew me away! the twists and turns were so elaborate that even I was fooled. This is defiantly one of the great ones!

Chira has always been the outcast, the unwanted, but thanks to her one and only best friend t

Let me just say WOW!!! I LOVED this book!! The only problem I had with it is that it ended....lol!! Everything about this book was excellent, the story building, the character building, the plot line, the ending, everything. The intereaction between the main , & the secondary characters was exemplary. I actually experienced their emotions, while I was reading. Tis rare that an author can make the reader feel so strongly with & for the characters in their books. The drama & the mystery kept you o ...more

First Impression is a phenomenal start to a brilliant series! The twists and turns will have you reevaluating what you think you know and second guessing what is right before your eyes. This is not a simple story, but it is a beautiful one filled with wonderful characters and a storyline that will hold you captive. Watching the events unfold before me was like watching a true masterpiece come to life. I love books that really make you think, and this one did that and so much more. You don’t want ...more

General Review (No Spoilers)

I loved this book, it was not exactly what I was expecting, it was better. It was very YA but with mystery, paranormal and romance. I was not exactly sure to make of the paranormal part. It was not magic or vampires or zombies, it was something new, once I got my head around it, I really liked it. I liked the characters, they were fun and relatable. I would like to thank the author for providing me a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

This story is on the shorter length, just over 100 pages but it's full steam ahead from the get-go. Do not think you will read this book in interludes, not going to happen. It sucked me right in and before I knew it, I was on the last page. Written from one POV, Chira's, it makes for a great mystery because you don't get to know what's going on in anyone else's head.

This book is the first in the Shadow Maven series, and I am in love! Pauline Creeden is amazing as always with this supernatural mystery. There are layers within this novel that mix the paranormal in just right that it had me from the start. There was no doubt in my mind that this was going to be a quick read for me and not because it was easy. It was simply because the fact that I knew that I was going to love every single moment of reading it. The story starts is off with Chira showing Ben aro ...more

Things are not what they appear.

This story is a perfect blend of mystery and paranormal. The setting was the perfect backdrop to this hauntingly beautiful story. I was drawn in to the story from the first page and was constantly surprised. Just as I thought I knew what or who was behind everything something happened to throw me off. The author did a great job of giving small hints and clues throughout the story without giving away the entire mystery.

The romance was sweet and not too overdone. Th

Pauline just keeps proving to me why she is an amazing author. She has a broad range and versatility that allows her to write fantasy, horror, suspense, paranormal, romance and even spiritual. She can do it all! First Impression is the latest in a long line of fabulous books, and this time she’s dealing with spirits.

What made this book stand out for me, was Chira. Too often, the protagonist of a story is the “best”. Whether they have some special ability, or are smarter, more clever, fa

I sat down knowing that this book had me at paranormal. A story that would possibly have me on the edge of my seat what I got was so much more! The level of malevolent evil and just down right scared was so powerful it left me reeling. First Impressions is not just a paranormal story however, it is a story with layers of tragedy and pain combined with friendship as well. When I first met Chira Kelly I new that she was different. First Impression was yet another, book I couldn’t put down. It was a quick read, I finished it in a day and totally enjoyed it. I particularly liked Chira. She wasn’t really a “typical” YA female lead. She was nerdy and very relateable to me. (May i also point out that the fandom references present in the book were golden?) I also liked the fact there wasn’t really a “love triangle.” (I think you could interpret that from Matt, Ben and Chira’s relationship but i don’t consider it one personally ...more

First Impression by Pauline Creeden is a teen/young adult book that I believe anyone would love to read. Pauline Creeden captures the atmosphere of high school to the point that you are pulled back there.

All Chira Kelly wants at school is to be left alone. She has one friend, Tasha, and she is quite happy with that. As luck would have it, she has been nominated to show the new kid, Ben Oscuro, around. There is something mysterious about him that d

I wasn’t really sure what to expect when I started reading First Impressions, but I think not knowing what to expect, made the experience reading this book so much better! I have read a lot of YA Paranormal books, but this one takes the cake of CREEPY! There was one part in the book, that I should have not read alone. You could literally feel the fear, of all the characters.

I loved all of the Harry Potter and Doctor Who references! The very beginning started off on a Harry Potter-like note. But after that, the story did feel like it dragged and read like any other high school drama, until the point where they investigated the old school house. As a paranormal fan, I really wanted more paranormal from it, but even at the end, it felt like most everything that happened in it (except for the ghost images) ended up having real world explanations. But, don’t get me wron ...more

This is a very fast paced book. You jump right into the action in Chapter three and by the time you get there, the main character have been pretty much introduced. I liked that there was very little confusion about who the story was about and what was happening. Chira has had a rough time being one of the poorest girls in school and having her step dad work for the school. On top of that, home life isn't exactly something a junior in high school wants. She really cannot stand her step dad so she ...more

Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for a copy of this novel

I found it hard to rate this book, mostly because I felt that it had potential that wasn't met. I didn't dislike it, as such, but I definitely felt that it could have been better.

For example, the 'mystery' was too easily worked out - I already knew who the kidnapper was. I also felt like the paranormal and the mystery were too simply linked, and that there wasn't enough complexity to the novel.

The novel was too short, and too easi

When she meets a new boy in school Ben, he has a dark past but is friendly and has a good hart. Chira feels drawn to him, but keeps him on a distance same time.

Chira who is always trying to keep a low profile and do the right thing, Ben who sees the world and beyond it, and Ben's cousin Matt who is a normal guy whose world falls apart and as he tries to make sense of it and create a new normal for himself he draws closer to Ben and Chira. Loved this book! It starts with Chira trying to deal with a terrible step-dad, a rumor at her school and a head cold when she meets the mysterious Ben. A trip to a haunted school starts the dominos taking down all the kids who saw the apparition of a ghost. Who will be next? The bodies are stacking up and Chira looks to be next on the list.

Ben was awesome with this abilities and aloofness. His chemistry with Chira was wonderful to read.

This is a great Y/A Paranormal book. Chira feels like a loner with only one friend. Until Ben shows up and Chira gets stuck showing him around and she founds out she is intrigued by him. When they go to a suspected haunted house one by one of the teens that seen the ghost they lose their life in suspicious events. I will not give any spoilers away but it is not what it seems. I loved this book! My husband says I give too much information in a plot synopsis, so now that he's made me totally self conscious, I won't summarize. I'll just tell you that the story was great. It's a mystery with paranormal elements and a budding romance, as well. Pauline knows how to keep a reader interested and is gifted with weaving magic with her words so that you immerse yourself in it. Please give it a read!
