David Metheny is GLBT writer from Chicago, IL and after 11 years working in the retail field took the leap to writing fiction full time. He began his career in 2013 with his first book, "Seduction of the King: The Back Road to Wonderland". He current lives in Chicago with his husband and is working on the third part to his Wonderland series.
A dark and dangerous take on the classic tale with a gay twist. When Kayden Daniels journeys through the looking glass chaos ensues. Openly gay, rich and promiscuous, he sets his sights on the King of Wonderland. James, the King of Hearts, has an open marriage of sorts with Queen Verde. After James acts on his growing attraction to Kayden, he becomes very possessive, much to Verde’s dismay. As the relationship progresses and James obsession with the sex crazed visitor starts to show, it just may cost Kayden his head, in a manner of speaking. Obsession, lust, jealousy and anger have thrown things off balance in Wonderland.
"You'll find Wonderland is made up of beautiful things and offers many pleasures, but remember all things have a balance."
As the story progresses, Kayden begins the slow descent into madness with his closeted lover, a psychotic queen and a white rabbit. Marcus, James stepson, adds a juicy twist to this story that is already beautifully bent. Gruesome deaths are plaguing the kingdom and James is doing his best to stay focused on his duties, while trying to keep an on his new lover. When Kayden catches the eye of another lover, James jealousy may cost them both their soul.
I’ve read this book twice and I’ll admit, I’m still a little bit confused. Not an easy story to follow told from the perspective of multiple characters, and there are a lot of characters! But, there is potential here for greatness. This first book in the series is laying the groundwork for things to come. I was a little disappointed that while the author is taking this daring risk by turning a beloved classic into a dark and sexy gay story, he fed into the sex crazed sleeping around can’t keep it in my pants misgiving that a lot of people associate with gay men. That being said, as I said, there is still potential. And I will concede, the sex was off the charts hot. I’m excited to see where Metheny goes with this world he’s building. Kayden becoming Hatter; James learning to control his jealousy; Marcus evolving as the white rabbit; oh and Queen Verde, every story does need a raging bitch, right?
Yes, this is a hard one to follow, but if you stick it out to the end, I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised. And as anxious as I am for the next book in this dark new series.
I’ve never taken the trip down the rabbit hole, until now. So there won’t be any comparisons between Kayden and Alice’s trip into Wonderland. I’m glad I waited because I’m sure Alice didn’t have the same journey Kayden did.
Seduction of a King is a dark lust filled tale of the quest for power and love. Wonderland is a place of balance between light and dark, good and evil. Or as The King of Hearts said “You’ll find Wonderland is made up of beautiful things and offers many pleasures, but remember all things have a balance.”
In the first book of this series we get introduced to the characters and get a feel for Wonderland. Kayden also lovingly known as the Hatter, is the one everyone is talking about. It seems one minute he was at his construction site, the next there was a blue light and he was falling onto the forest floor. Then life got a bit interesting starting with meeting the Queen and King of hearts. Queen Verde is one he needs to keep an eye on as she hints as to what she may want from him. James, the King, on the other hand his flirtations are one of the reasons Kayden thinks about hanging around for a while.
James the King of Hearts has been paired to rule the Hearts District and oversee the other five districts of Wonderland with Queen Verde. Although paired the Queen and King have an understanding, consorts are allowed as long as they are kept out of the public eye. They do have to keep up appearances. Unfortunately some things are easier said than done and with what happen to his last lover, well….. When his feelings for Kayden become more possessive and obvious he does something he soon regrets.
There is a storm coming and not just between The King and the Hatter. The Wonderland is under attack but where these attacks are coming from is any ones guess. The outer districts have had their occupants killed in a gruesome manner. Not the usual “off with their head” But the King has a plan and Marcus his step son is doing what he can to help him get what he needs to win the coming battle. Oh and Marcus, the little rabbit, adds a whole different twist to this story.
The story is very good. You may have a little trouble with the time line until you realize this story is told in more than one characters point of view. There are also a couple times where there are a lot of characters introduced at one time. This can make it a bit hard to keep them straight. Neither of these things will prevent me from getting the next part of this story set to release this Spring 2014. Enjoy the wild ride David Metheny has penned for you.
received a copy from the author for a fair and honest review
So.. what a crazy and kooky story of Alex in Wonderland... This is m/m romance, but instead of a light and fluffy Alex meet Wonderland, it is kinda going down a dark path. Ok.. I totally get Paradox now. You know what...I think this should be read before Paradox...which is a prequeal to this story. Paradox makes so much more sense to me now... I really can't wait to see what happen to our Alex after the King dumped him...
The first, in what is clearly to be a series, sets up an interesting take on Wonderland. In the effort to maintain some mystery there's a lot left vague and confusing. Add in some need for a bit of editing in spots for clarity and word choice and this is not the easiest read.
Cute and fun, but I hope subsequent installments are more reader friendly.
