On paper, McCoy Toliver's life is what every young girl dreams of. She has a thriving law career, a big, beautiful house, and a man by her side. Except there’s a problem. Everything that glitters isn’t always gold, and the man she was once madly in love with is now a tyrant she no longer recognizes. McCoy has fought for her life for the last few years, and she’s desperate. She knows she has to get out of the situation for good. Earth Carlson hustled his way to street royalty at a young age. His killer mentality and book smarts have made him a few enemies. Earth couldn’t care less about who he has pissed off as long as he has money in his pocket, food on the table, and his family and friends are taken care of. The only thing he ever regretted was the loss of his best friend. But Earth vowed to get the man responsible for his death, even if it meant he had to die trying. To get out of an abusive relationship, McCoy does the one thing she finds kidnaps her fiancé’s biggest enemy. The saying goes, ‘The enemy of my enemy is my friend,’ right? And right now, McCoy needs all the friends she can get. What she didn’t expect was the man she had locked inside her home would become the man locked inside her heart.
Whewww I love me a soft kidnapping . McCoy took a moment to Boss up when needed it to set her plan in motion. This is right here, I can’t lie. I was definitely in my feelings concerning McCoy, and all the DV that she was going through, but I am more than happy that she survived, and was able to overcome. Now Earth loved him some McCoy and I loved that for her ! Everything Earth did was so intentional. He showed no hesitation in showing McCoy she was loved, and that she was worthy.
I forgot that I actually read from this author before and it didn't appeal to me. I feel like the story ends woth questions unanswered. Why did Jamel do a whole 360 after 3 years, just seemed there was something missing. Even a man that's handsy will show some Interest in the woman even if it's just physical. I honestly thought he was holding something over her head and that's how he was able to use her the way he did. If she had money why didn't she just leave? Why didn't she reunite with her friend and was L still friends with her? the time-line was confusing to me because he told his mom it had only been a week then Fire said hmit had been 2 weeks but how because one of the situations she was out foelr 2 weeks, still have the times prior to that the situation at the club . Why did it take so long for them to get him if they were so powerful? Why did he still do the block party if he already had Jamel? The storyline was great but I feel that it had a lot more potential.
I’ve had this on my TBR for so long & now I’m mad I didn’t read it sooner!!!
This book was so good & literally caught my attention from the very beginning!! McCoy went through so much with Jamel! He pmo from the first page to the last! The way he treated her, degraded & belittled McCoy had my blood boiling!! But she was stronger than what she thought & the plan she came up with to get outta her situation was genuine!!
Earth was really the guy! I thought for sure I knew what was gonna happen with him but was pleasantly surprised by the turn of events!! The reassurance, security, genuine love & care he gave to her was everything!! This man literally had me smiling from ear to ear at the way he handled this woman!! My man, my man, my mannn 🥰 I just loved him!!
The breakdown of the family, who’s who & who’s dating who was a lot to say the least 😭 everybody’s interconnected somehow & they all mesh so well together!! They were all super funny & I can’t wait to read their individual stories!! This was such a good read! If you haven’t already get into it!!
*please read the trigger warnings prior to reading this book it can get a bit graphic but well worth the read!!
It was a nice lazy Saturday read. Nothing too complex, there was some heaviness with the DV and sexual assault. But overall, it was mostly dramatic and a bit too unrealistic.
With the story being pretty short the not so great parts were digestible.
The small glimpses of past characters was nice, I was a bit confused with the connection like McCoy. I’m interested in Genesis and Meghan, as well as Lynx and Fire.
it don’t take much convincing— all I heard about this book was found family w/ hilarious banter with a twist on the kidnapping trope. that’s it. it didn’t take much. 🤣🤣
this was so good. the way that I was hooked off the first couple pages was crazy. prince was not playing with that man & neither was earth when he got wind of what was going on with coy. jamel ain’t worth the dirt under my old kswiss fr. like, he deserved everything he got lol
I loved that coy got a chance to have her family (blood or not) I will forever be a stan of a found family trope. this is my first read from this author & it won’t be the last 🫶🏽
I'm hollin!!!!! This book has me at the edge of my seat!!!! This book took me on this emotional daggum rollercoaster at the end! Y'all just read the damn book.
☆☆☆☆ ——- ↣ This book was a TRIP from start to finish! I laughed almost on every page. Everybody was delusional and crazy and I ate it up. I would have finished this book in one sitting if I could honestly. ↣ I loved Earth and Mccoy’s love story. It was unconventional and fast paced but I still ate it up. Earth fell in love with my girl at first sight and she deserved it. I felt so sick for her with everything she went through with that lame she was with. She deserved so much more and I’m glad Earth gave it to her. HE TALKED HER THROUGH IT EVERY-TIME AND I LOVE THAT!!! If you don’t feel comfortable reading open paged domestic violence situation this one may not be the one for you. ↣ There were a lot of side characters and it was sometimes hard to keep up with but they were all funny as hell and added another dynamic to this story. Fire needs to be studied fr - the most delusional man I ever seen! ——- Tropes ↣ DV and sexual abuse Rep (open paged) ↣ Kidnapping ↣ Insta Love ↣ Found Family ↣ Funny Side Characters ↣ Dual POV ↣ Short Chapters
This is just what I needed to get me out of the slump I was in❗️❗️❗️ Earth was definitely THAT man 👏🏽👏🏽 I love how he cared for Coy and locked her down as soon as he handled business with Jamel. I do wish we could have seen more of them after marriage and Coy had her baby. Also, I also love the family dynamic in the story, how they were there for each other and Coy and were fun to be around . It was a few times in the book, Fire and Krude had me rolling .
It's a vibe This book is strong off vibes. The MMC is a little unhinged. The family is really feisty and interesting. All things that points to being a dynamic read, but for me, it falls flat. There are minor character inconsistencies and major character storyline discrepancies. I was trying to think and handle how certain actions line up, and it was difficult at times. McCoy, as the FMC, appeared to have 3 different character types in 1. She was boss up strong FMC who can commandeer a street team for an extract, while simultaneously be a battered and abused woman insecure woman, while also be smart-naive archetype. It was a bit much and had me doing whiplash and wishing she picked a behavior lane. Also disappointed in how the Big Bad went out. It just was beyond anticlimactic. So many inconsistencies in the characterization and even plot made moments feel implausible.
One thing that does stand out is how Earth worked to make sure Coy felt love and protected. Even though holding him hostage bit felt like a big joke, he was consistent in claiming her and showing her what that means.
"Whenever you need reminding, sit on my face as your throne so you know the queen you are" type energy was the book's saving grace.
Caught Me Slippin' by Aubry J is a heavy book with a heavy topic, but with a HEA! I love Mccoy's character, even thought she was getting knocked up side the head, she still stood her ground and made plans to escape that lifestyle. Earth, Lord, have mercy! He was unhinged at the end, but I mean, I couldn't blame him. Fire will probably be my new favorite fiction character. I hope she wrote a book about him. Jamal, you can just go play in traffic! He got what he deserved at the end. This is my first book by this author and will not be my last, I am definitely about to find her entire catalog and read the books.
I tried to get into this book but just couldn’t. The way thing progressed was just unrealistic. She was super weak but then not at other times. I was honestly confused about a lot. I gave up after about 20%.
I might have to try to kidnap me a fine semi-retired thug. I mean can’t be worse than taking a chance on tinder lol. First, if Krude in the book, he’s my favorite character every time, unless Mo there. Second, this was so sweet. I alway enjoy insta love when it’s done well. Reading Coy go through everything was rough but I think I disassociated when she did. Earth was domineering and sexy and so sweet. We love a man who isn’t afraid of his feelings. The pacing of this book is moderate but steady, the writing is easy and engaging, the characters are loveable and crazy, and the chemistry between the main characters was really good. Aubry’s cousin’s cousins and best friend’s friends cousins continue to be one of the best friends and family group I’ve read and she is definitely one of my favs authors.
going into this book, i was not expecting THAT. meeting mccoy and earth in fire and lynx’s book, i just knew that i had to read their book next… and it did not disappoint. right from when they first met, there was an instant connection and I loved how they took their time to explore each other and slowly, but surely fall in love with one another (despite the very unique circumstances, and even more unique meet-cute — if you could even call it that, hey 🤣🙈)
from beginning to end, i was HOOKED, I can’t wait to jump into more books by this author, and especially about more of the characters in these books bc the found family is 😚🤌🏽 I love them all so very much!!
if you haven’t read these books yet, they should def be next up on your list, so good!!!!! 💕
This book takes you through a lot of emotions. If DV is triggering for you, I highly suggest you skip this read.
Earth and Coy were meant to be. The way that this man constantly poured into her was so pure & beautiful! Every thing he said he did. Earth protected Mccoy from everyone including herself. The way he made love to her while speaking life into her and making sure she understood the queen she was, was everything!!!
Oh Yesss this was good!! Aubry J. has written some of the best urban romance stories!! Caught Me Slippin was an intense read with kidnapping, domestic violence, with trust and turns!! She introduced some new characters with a fresh new love story while intertwining characters from the past. And she leaves us anticipating future book releases!!!
McCoy kind of pissed me off with the mess she allowed Jamel to do. I understand she needed it to work out without her name being attached, but to accept all of that and you had somewhere to go that he didn’t have access to…Earth handled business though.
This my first time reading something from this author and I must say she did a wonderful job she’s had me laughing and mad at the same time but great book….
I know from reading Genesis this was going to be my favorite story and it did not fail…. McCoy was strong even though her terrible ex kept trying to beat her down. I love that Earth came in and showed her exactly how strong she truly was and had her back from the beginning. She deserves all the love and family she received!!! Omg 😆 I loved it 🥰
THIS BOOK WAS DARK ASF AT TIMES AND THE DV WAS A LOT AND IT HAD ME WANTING TO SUCK SOMETHING UP THAT PHUCK PU**Y 🥷 PEE WHILE🤷🏽♀️. IT WAS 🥹💔
THAT BIH AZZ PHUCK BOY JAMAL WAS JUST A WEAK BIH. HE TRULY WAS THE TYPICAL WEAK AZZ 🥷 WHO DIDN’T KNOW WTF TO DO WITH A REAL WOMAN SO HE BROKE HER DOWN PHYSICALLY MENTALLY AND EMOTIONALLY. THE HOT WATER SCENE MADE ME WANNA STAB HIS AZZ AND THROW SOME BOWLING HOT PISS ON HIM🤬🤬🤬. HE COULDN’T FIGHT FOR REAL NOT A MAN SO HE PREYED ON WOMEN WHO HAD NO ONE. THAT BIH GOT WHAT HE DESERVED. TORTURING MCCOY AND THE WHOLE TIME HE WAS MARRIED🙄. HIS BIH AZZ COUSIN LEON TOO. I CHEERED EARTH ON WHEN HE WAS STOMPING THAT 🥷 FACE IN🤣🤣🤣
I KNEW FIRE ONLY REACTED THE WAY HE DID TO LYNX CAUSE HE FELT EXACTLY HOW HIS BROTHER TOLD HIM HE’D FEEL WHEN HE MET HIS ONE. THAT FOOL ENDED UP AND DUMPED BEFORE HE COULD EVEN GET HER. SHE SHOULD’VE SLAPPED SOME SINCE INTO HIS AZZ AFTER THE WAY HE TALKED TO HER. NOW HE’S BUTT HURT CAUSE SHE GOT A MAN🤣🤣🤣. I’D LOVE TO READ THEIR STORY THO. THE WAY THAT MAN TOOK THEM BOYS AND LOVED THEM AS IF THEY CAME FROM HIM🤎
IT’S TOO MANY FAMILY AND FRIENDS TO NAME THEM ALL, BUT THEIR WHOLE CREW IS LEGIT THE ISH🥰. THEY HAD ME LAUGHING OFF AND ON THE WHOLE BOOK AND WITH THE DARKNESS THE CAME WITH ALL THE DV IT WAS MORE THAN NEEDED.
MY HEART BROKE FOR MCCOY. SHE HAS NO ONE TO GUIDE HER, OUT SHOW HER WHAT IS WHAT LIKE TO REALLY BE LOVED BY A MAN. SHE ENDED YEARS OF ABUSE AND PAIN AT THE HANDS OF A MAN WHO PROFESSED HIS WEAK 🥷 VERSION OF LOVE. THEN SHE DID EXACTLY WHAT PRINCE TOLD HER TO BUT ON A MUCH BIGGER SCALE AND CAME ACROSS A REAL MAN. EARTH WAS EVERYTHING 😍! THAT MAN KNEW AS SON AS HE SAW MCCOY HE WANTED HER FOREVER. HE WENT SHOPPING WITH HER PLAN WHILE EXECUTING HIS OWN. THE WAY HE SPOKE LIFE BACK INTO COY, LOVED ON HER, CARED FOR HER, PROTECTED HER, AND WORSHIPPED HER MIND, BODY, AND SOUL WAS BEAUTIFUL🫶🏽. THESE TWO JOURNEY TO LOVE WASN’T EASY AT FIRST BUT EARTH DIDN’T LET HER TRAUMA KEEP HIM FROM LOVING HER. OR REMINDING HER THAT HIS LOVE WAS REAL AND WHEN SHE WAS READY TO LOVE HIM BACK HE’D BE READY TO TAKE THE NEXT STEP. I HATED IT HAD TO END WAS I WAS INVESTED FROM START TO FINISH.
DESPITE THE DVI WOULD MOST DEFINITELY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
“After I finished the grapes, I did the polite thing and washed my bowl, put it away, and then finished looking around. My mama had raised me to have manners, after all.” I love this about Earth
Earth is good for McCoy. He did everything to ensure she was always protected by him and loved. He was just what McCoy needed. “A small smile spread across her sexy ass lips, and I had to hold my groan back at the sight of her diamond-encrusted fangs. Shorty was checking every box on my list of a dream woman.” This was a thought Earh had when McCoy introduced herself to Earth. Aubrey J did a great job showing the reader why Earth fell in love with McCoy. He started out immediately attracted to her from her boss personality she displayed at first to the vulnerable woman also showed at times. There were definitely also some ‘not like other women’ moments. I enjoyed every single moment of the love story between Earth and McCoy. Especially after he decided that he wanted to make her his woman. I like a MMC who isn’t too afraid to show his love. We see that Earth knows what love looks like through his parents. Earth has a great relationship with his parents. Many of his friends are in love or pining after someoneHe just hadn’t found it before McCoy. I was really not into the POV when it involved Jamel. They abuse seemed to be a little caricaturist. The man had this woman show up who a warehouse where he beat her in front of his enemy. This set her up to the idea of locating Earth, but it did not make any sense to me. And, this was the first time he had her witness this behavior on his part. There was another time when he woke her up by pouring scalding water from a pot on her. It just seemed as if he was being cruel just for the sake of being cruel. Those moments made me want to put the book down. I read the book which told the story of his twin brother so I powered through to at least find out how Fire found his twin sons in the trap house. Thankfully I read on because the interactions between McCoy and her abusive man was limited after that
Edit: because curiosity truly got the best of me, I went back to finish. Make no mistake that I stand firm by the earlier review, but I can say the book took a turn for the better. Earth saved it and I truly had some lol moments. Idk who's worse between Fire and Krude. They're both fools.
There were major timeline issues that I wish would've been read over. Continuity issues as well, because how did you and your sister have the same last name if you got your name from the officer that rescued you? And I thought her she was found in a dumpster with the umbilical cord still attached, but somehow her parents did in a car accident when she was five? This is why it is important for an author to read over their books before sending them out.
😑 DNF at 15% ... the parts I read didn't make a lick of sense.
Prince told you to find Earth to avenge him and get you out of the situation, but instead you kidnap him?
You have the connections to snatch a crime boss up, but none to unalive your abuser?
And ask of this was in the first 14% of the book.
The domestic violence wasn't the problem for me. It was the different personality shifts of the FMC. Battered woman one second, bad ass lawyer who had connections with some bad ass people the next. It didn't track and made the book come off as trauma porn.
It would have made a lot more sense for her to just be a damsel in distress and seek out a Earth. Or rethink the plot and reasoning for the kidnapping, because I honestly liked the idea.
And why all of the long drawn out games? Why not just tell the man what you know and need him for? Why continue with the abuse? If you're a lawyer, why not just remove his name from your accounts and get tf on? Or better yet, just stop funding those accounts? So, yeah, when i have these many questions in only 15% of the book, I just bow out gracefully.
But that virtual voice was 😩 This was my first book (well second) by this author. The second book got amazing reviews (& I vetted it & read past the first 25 that could be her friends & family 😉) I invested & started reading & listening Fire’s kindle/audiobook but as soon as chapter one started I knew there had to be one before this. So I stopped & searched and found this one.
This storyline was very very entertaining! A word of caution though, when Ms. J warns you about the triggers BELIEVE HER! Those scenes may be too intense for survivors, the empathic, or faint of heart! Take care of yourself first!
I enjoyed ALL of the many many MANY characters but immediately realized what all the ladies on those posts on IG were talking about! Now I have to go back and find these other books or get a bibliography/family story tree for all of these other characters! Sheesh! I’m looking forward to all that love and aggression. But I digress. Anyhoo… So I was reading the book (bc there was no Audible for it) & then discovered it has a Read & Listen feature so ok, I allowed the virtual voice to play and baby…that female voice read parts of this book (with the wrong inflections) that a man should *never* say to another man…unless it’s that type of book 👀 THIS is NOT THAT type of book! You feel me? 👀
It’s very-well written, editing was on-point 😚👌🏾 and the characters were ruthless but lovable and I know that’s like an oxymoron or conundrum or something but ay…it’s fiction and that’s how I likes mine! 😜 I highly recommend this book especially if you need a vacay from your “reality” but as the warnings say take care of yourself because it’s a real journey to that HEA!
¡BRAVA! Fantastic job Ms. J!! New fan/supporter here! Moving (back) onto Fire Ocean & Lake’s story (will REAL & GOOD narrators😂)
The ratings definitely fooled me. Once I started reading, the entire concept of the kidnapping just didn’t make sense. McCoy kidnapped Earth so his family would go after Jamel, but that logic falls apart immediately. Jamel already killed Prince, who was part of the same ddb crew. The same crew Earth is from. Prince was pretty much their brother. So they were already gunning for Jamel. The kidnapping was completely pointless.
If the goal was to write a book centered around a DV theme, then just write that. This plot didn’t justify it at all. McCoy had a way out, and instead of using it, she “kidnapped” him. Why not just ask him for protection and never go back to Jamel. That would have made far more sense. I honestly thought she and her best friend were going to catch Jamel off guard or set him up somehow, but no. Instead, she somehow had enough money and connections to borrow another kingpin’s men to kidnap Earth. Like… what?
Because of that, the continued abuse made zero sense. McCoy choosing to stay and be subjected to it instead of using the resources clearly available to her was frustrating. It felt like the author didn’t fully think the plot through and just wanted an excuse to keep the abuse going.
I also didn’t buy McCoy being portrayed as a powerful lawyer while accepting Jamel’s abuse. The inconsistencies were hard to ignore. She could organize a kidnapping with outside muscle, but couldn’t figure out a realistic way to protect herself or remove Jamel from the picture.
Maybe I’ve outgrown these types of books. A lot of stories like this have high ratings and reel me in, but once I start reading, the plot just doesn’t hold up.
MY RATING: 2.5* RELEASE DATE: 23 January 2024 CLIFFHANGER:
This is another new to me author that showcased the deliciousness of a black man loving his woman.
I loved the concept of reverse kidnapping, and I loved Mccoy for so many reasons. Who doesn’t love a criminal man with touch her and die vibes? Earth is everything an alpha man should be. The story flowed nicely, and the characters were hilarious. Not sure if it’s meant to be a rom-com with a bit of darkness, but I was here for it.
However, this book could have benefited from some serious editing. The timeline was a bit confused there, the story with McCoy’s surname was inconsistent. How did she end up with the same surname as a sister she didn’t know about? Where did McCoy get the gangstas to kidnap Earth? Also she had money, real money and connections, why such a drastic step to escape? I don’t know. I have many questions clearly. The things that really stood out to me to a point of annoying was there were A LOT OF CHARACTERS. Far too many. I still don’t know who is whose cousin, and whose best friend is whose cousin and best friend. It was just too much that I honestly don’t understand what went on there.
