I appreciated the respect given to the Hawaiian culture and language. There is a Hawaiian glossary in the back of the book, but it's not in alphabetical order and some words used in the text aren't included in the glossary.
There are too many spelling, punctuation and grammatical errors to count. The dialog is stilted in some cases. Was a copy editor used? That person would have been invaluable and this book could have been so much better. The poor writing bumped down my rating.
There is an eclectic group of characters that become more sympathetic as we learn more about them.
Donner and Okana remind me of Boris and Natasha in the Bullwinkle cartoons I watched as a child. Theo also provides comic relief. Even Drake becomes likeable.
I did enjoy the plot and especially the pteranodons.
This is the first in a series, which was a disappointing realization after almost 500 pages.
