Rate this book

Oda, you did well

(Tell me if you caught this reference)

No. i'm definately not looking at this art and crying. no not at all.

________
The Plot
The light novel starts with the events 2 years before the manga. It is mainly focused on Dazai's Port Mafia era and how he finally left the mafia for the detective agency. I think this book is vital for understanding Dazai's character. Also, this book has the purest and the best character to ever exist- Odasaku.

The story is infact a bit inspired from a photo of the real life Dazai, Odasaku and Ango who used to meet each other often at a bar. I couldn't find the real photo though which the author talked about in the afterword.
But i found this image tho

I love how Asagiri never makes romance a plot. Hell. It isn't even a subplot here and I'm so glad. I'm fed up of romance books where the only way to complete your story and find a purpose is to fall in love.
To me, the topic of finding a purpose, a raison d'etre, something worth living for is very intimate and close to my heart.

__________
Analysis- May contain Spoilers
I loved how the book explores Dazai's character and shows his bond with Oda and Ango. As Odasaku said, Dazai was just 'a child left in the dark for too long'. He was only seventeen or eighteen in this book I think. I am probably rambling by now but I think it's important to realize how complex Dazai's character is. I think the scene where Odasaku advises Dazai was really important and the fact that Dazai realized this thing too that only Odasaku had been able to understand him. Hence, we see him truly lost when Odasaku was about to die. This is a side of him, we rarely see- the lost and lonely side.
The way Odasaku talked about the reason why he left killing really touched my heart and it was equally sad to see him without a purpose at the end when the orphans died.

________
Some Quotes I Marked + Spoilers
1.“You hurt yourself on a block of tofu?”
He must have been in desperate need of some calcium."

2.““Odasaku…,” Dazai said softly. “Forgive me for the absurd wording, but—don’t go. Find something to rely on. Expect good things to happen from here on out. There’s gotta be something… Hey, Odasaku, do you know why I joined the Mafia?”

I stared at him. We had known each other for a longtime, but he’d never even attempted to talk about that.

“I joined the Mafia because of an expectation I had. I thought if I was close to death and violence—close to people giving in to their urges and desires, then I would be able to see the inner nature of humankind up close. I thought if I did that…” Dazai paused before continuing, “…I would be able to find something—a reason to live.”

I looked at him; he looked back at me. “I wanted to be a novelist,” I said. “I thought I wouldn’t deserve such a life if I killed someone during a mission. That’s why I never killed anyone. But that’s all in the past. There’s only one thing I want now.”

3.That was when Dazai first realized: Sakunosuke Oda understood him much more than he’d ever imagined—right up to his very heart, almost to the center of his mind. Dazai didn’t realize until then that someone had known him so well.
For the first time in his life, Dazai wanted from the
bottom of his heart to know something. He asked the man
before him: “Odasaku… What should I do?”

Be on the side that saves people,” Odasaku replied. “If both sides are the same, then choose to become a good person. Save the weak, protect the orphaned. You might not see a great difference between right and wrong, but…saving others is something just a bit more wonderful.”
“How do you know?”
“I know. I know better than anyone else.”

I think this light novel is extremely important to understand how Dazai Osamu's mind works (why he's so obsessed with dying since such a young age, and why he decided to leave the Port Mafia) and how his character is constructed the way it is within the manga's narrative. Do not forget that this Mafia!Dazai is only 18yo and the way he behaves here is different -at some extent- from the more adult ADA!Dazai.

On the other hand, the one true character that steals this novel is Oda Sakunosuke. Odasaku is not only the MC throughout /The Dark Era/, he's also the main narrator that tells us about the enemy organisation Mimic, about the Port Mafia's inner structure, and -most importantly- about the friendship between himself, Sakaguchi Ango, and Dazai Osamu.

What I love most of this novel is the fact that Asagiri Kafka-sensei had the talent to blend reality and fantasy in this work. The real writers (Oda, Sakaguchi, and Dazai) were friends in real life, they gathered many times at the Lupin Bar, and they took pictures of themselves the last time they were there together before one of them -and eventually the other two- died a few days after. That's exactly what happens in this novel. The lives of these writers that belonged to the Buraiha movement (the Decadent School of post-WWII Japanese literature) are blended with the fictional world of BSD to create this sad, tragic story.

Is it a tragedy? Well, yeah.

No one can escape from the night forever.

Note: I actually finished watching the anime episodes that are based on the content of this light novel, but I still haven't gotten enough so I will start reading ASAP. *jumps to read*

(1) Okay~~~~ we get some *passionate* rivalry here again~~~*coughs* Gide and Odasaku *coughs* I guess Asagiri-sensei just like this kind of relationship among characters, right? Right?

(2) Plus Gide just downright said the young Akutagawa (he was like...16 years old or something like that?!) was just a "little black duckling" before Gide tried to kill him. Well said Mr. Gide!

(3) Anyway, the writing is better than I expected~I feel I am comfortable enough to read more of the light novels series after that. Hopefully, there will be more good stuff~

(4) I am satisfied with how the conspiracy is explained in the end (ah la la ?), the major plot twist is well-played.

(5) Although I don't think Gide's motive is all that great, I mean, seriously !!!!!

(6) I am not much of a huge fan of Odasaku but his reasoning and his friendship with Dazai and Ango is understandable enough. I think I can understand him and his reasoning (e.g. I am surprised he was once a and I like how the chance encounter he had with a certain someone changed his life)

(6) Plus the Dark Era Dazai, despite everyone praising him as a fucking genius, still the guy manages to be the worst mentor out there when he was dealing with Akutagawa. I mean, you don't keep telling a traumatized orphan he is worthless/never good enough/someone else is always better than him, I cannot tell whether Dazai is deliberated or not, or he really doesn't understand what he is doing. LOL

(7) But Odasaku is such a sweetheart for helping Akutagawa, and the kids rather unconditionally~~😹😢😹😢

"Awaken me from this oxidizing world of a dream..."

The second light novel of the Bungou Stray Dogs manga series is essentially the one that establishes the greatness of this universe, the depth of its characters and their inner world. It is no exaggeration to suggest that the manga series (and later on anime) would not have such success, both in Japan and worldwide, without it.
As we follow Odasaku, his relationship with the other two libertines Dazai and Ango, we finally learn the turning point of Dazai, for him coming to the side that saves people as it is actually just a bit more wonderful. We witness the darkness of the Mafia and its workings, the darkness of the characters composing it themselves, such as Akutagawa and his passionate obsession to make his mentor proud. Odasaku is a character of the finest caliber, his only appearance, him writing his story, his ideals and dream, is the foundation of this universe, the foundation of the universe of authors of different eras and literary worlds battling and bonding with each other.
Asagiri sensei's afterward providing insight of their inspirations, how without the faint glimmers of the original authors the manga could not be called Bungou. Asagiri describes the famous picture of the three libertines, Odasaku's death only 9 days after its capture and what it seemed as a meaningful friendship between them. Their exact words:
"Such wonderful, sympathetic relationships aren't easy to come by, and you can't simply take them back if you lose them. That's something even normal people like us can understand".

As Osamu Dazai wrote in his eulogy to Odasaku. "Oda! You did well".

As a Bungou Stray Dogs fan who has seen the anime and who reads the manga I'm just happy reading that light novel. Odasaku is such a precious man, he deserves the world.
There was one part which hit me hard (it's a long quote that's why it could be a litte bit spoiler-ish):

""I thought you were similiar to Dazai at first, rushing into battle and wishing for death without even considering the value of your own life. But he's different. He's sharp-witted with a mind like a steel trap. And he's just a child - a sobbing child abandoned in the darkness of a world far emptier than the one we're seeing."
He was too smart for his own good. That was why he was always alone. The reason why Ango and I were able to be by his side was that we understood the solitude that surrounded him, and we nevver stepped inside it no matter how close we stood.
But in that moment, I kind of regretted not stepping in and invading that solitude."

I shed a tear... Odasaku and Dazai ooohhhh I am going to lose it why did that have to happen....

Also, again, the POV switch made the reading experience less enjoyable than I would have liked really, but it was better than the first novel (maybe I just like Odasaku better than Kunikida so I was more willing to ignore it). Still, I really, really enjoyed this one.

but still no chuuya :/

Oda, you did well......

“I always lose the things I don’t want to lose the most. That’s why I don’t feel anything anymore. The moment you get your hands on something worth going after, you lose it. That’s just how things are. There is nothing worth pursuing at the cost of prolonging”

“One must never open the door to another's heart and try to judge them for the darkness tucked within.”

The second light novel of the Bungo Stray Dogs manga series is so important because it
establishes the greatness of this universe, the depth of its characters, and their inner world. I was genuinely excited to read it because Oda is one of the greatest characters in the BSD universe.

The event of this light novel is set 2 years before the manga. It is focused on Dazai's Port Mafia era and how he finally left the mafia and went to the detective agency. The story is told from Odasaku's point of view, and having him as the narrator, make is so much harder to read because he tells us about the enemy organization Mimic, about the Port Mafia's inner structure, and -most importantly- about the friendship between himself, Sakaguchi Ango, and Dazai Osamu.

I love the author for writing this light novel. Yes, it was tragic and devastating, but I love knowing more about this world and its characters.

4.25⭐ Dark Era Arc
This was quite the emotional ride. Learning that a mere picture taken by the real life authors at some bar inspired this rollercoaster ride..

I retract my previous statements. Dark Era is actually pretty interesting, and Oda isn’t that bad of a character. His motivations stem from a strange place, but, overall, I think he’s actually very interesting.

I also liked how this book provided insight into Dazai’s motivations, and about Mori’s destructive rationality when it comes to protecting the Mafia. It’s a complex story.

I think it’s kind of funny how Oda’s reason as to why he stopped being an assassin is because he just really wanted to write fanfic. 14-year-old Oda Sakunosuke, professional hitman, decided that he wanted to write fanfiction, and clearly couldn’t do that unless he completely stopped killing people. It’s funny but in a sad way.

Why does this series like traumatizing children so much? What does Asagiri have against teens just living their lives? Almost all of them here are either child experiments or forced to be killers, sometimes a mix of both.

Also...

"Nothing in this world can fill the hole that is your loneliness. You will wander the darkness for eternity."

[...] Dazai didn't realize until then that someone had known him so well.

I love this story so much, it completely changes your perception of Dazai in the manga. It hurts, though. I'm not reading/watching this a third time.

You know what also hurts? Asagiri Kafka's Afterword! What was that?! The way he talks about Real Life Dazai, Oda and Sakaguchi taking that picture, how they must have been really good friends and Dazai writing "Oda! You did well" in Oda's eulogy, at this point I was softly sobbing on my Kobo 😭

Is getting emotional over dead writers for ridiculous reasons the "faint glimmers left behind for future generations" Asagiri is talking about?

Eventually became the first light novel of BSD that I read (because this the only one that has been completely translated) alongside "No Longer Human" and love to read the other side of BSD story. And just like then, I'd say, the Buraiha Trio deserves better.
