Just as epic as I remembered and even more enjoyable second time around. I’m sure my third reread will be soon. 😁

Original Review: Unedited Version

For the first time in my life, I regret not learning Mandarin diligently when my parents sent me to summer language school every year when I was a child. 😂 I am not ashamed to admit that despite being half Chinese, I can hardly write my Chinese name let alone speak or read fluently. 😁 *sigh* Only if I could go back to the past and tell the young Shin to learn Chinese properly so that she could read Danmei (Chinese term for yaoi, boy’s love, gay romance) in the future. 🤣 Lol, I bet I would have won every competition then. Anyhow, since I can’t read Chinese, I had to read this novel in fan-translated English. There is no official translation for this novel and fans did it for free. And I don’t mean this as an insult since I know how hardworking those fans are but even with an ok translation, this novel fucking blew me away. 😱 In case you still don’t know about my endless quirky kinks and fetishes, I love arsehole MCs who are super dominant and macho. And Jing surely is one. 😏 The novel gripped me from the very first page. I mean I do have a thing for Chinese costume imperial dramas because I love all those treacheries, backstabbing, plotting and intricate politics and man, this book is everything. 😍❤️ First of all, the top is super feminine and ethereally beautiful while the bottom is manly and handsome! OMG! 😱 My underpants are used as a flag now to prove my fangirling! 😁Second, while most Danmei novels are subtle and clean, this book is bloody and super erotic! I mean how Jing broke Cang by piece by piece and brought him back to life again surely is not for the faint of heart. And I loved every single second of it. 💙 EmperorJing’s love for Cang is borderline obsessive and maniac and not healthy at all but damn, it was delicious! 😋 And call it Stockholm syndrome but I love how Cang came to devote all his love to Jing in the end. I didn’t want this book to end. And I kept thinking how glorious it would be if I could read this book in its original text. Anyhow, I adored this book. 😌

5 Cang is Jing’s destiny stars

That I can’t keep
I’m not the girl that
You thought you wanted
Please don’t get angry
Have faith in me

Say I shouldn’t be here but I can’t give up the dark and taboo
It is dark that I love
I enjoy fluff sometimes
But when its dark, I feel my blood boil and the darker the better
It is the dark I love

God bless Yaoi, Manga, Anime, the translator, especially the translator or else I would have missed out on this depravity and the authors who push boundaries to feed our addiction.

The good, the bad and the damn right ugly all rolled in one summary.

Set in ancient China, ruled by the elusive Emperor Jing Zong who kidnaps a bandit, Lu Cang and in his twisted mind turns him into his bride.😂😮 and instead of treating him like one, let’s just say Jing is no angel. He repeatedly abuses Lu Cang without even learning his name. What follows is a filthy journey that is not for the faint heart, I wanted to skin Jing alive but then again, I was intrigued by his wickedness and lack of boundaries.

One minute he was a saint the next he was Beelzebub.

Then after all the horror Jing puts Lu through! He couldn’t help but fall in love! And made me fall in love too. UGH! Stockholm Syndrome and all it’s brothers. These two deserve each other.

Too bad this Manga is unfinished, I would love to read the rest.

So, If you Survived Father Figure, Mob for Jack #1 and all the other dark Yaois, you can survive this one.

I will not talk about the Royal Dog! My poor eyes!!!! 🤮🤮 will never unread that!

description

Thank you SHIN for the rec.

I will just leave this here:

“When I first saw you today in the great hall, I knew in my heart that you’re the one destined for me in this life...” Feeling the sappiness of his words, Lu Cang blushed an even darker shade of red. “My wife, you’re so beautiful...”
Unable to control the desire deeply-nested in his heart, he cautiously leaned in to kiss that soft cheek. A fragrant breath invaded his senses. His heart swayed even wilder.
“My bride, it is late. Let us rest...”
As he finished in a quivering, gentle voice, Lu Cang carefully extended a hand over towards that tender beauty...
But abruptly, he was seized!
“Huh! Pretty good-looking!”
“Who-who are you? What’re you doing?” he demanded in alarm, almost in hysterical panic as Xuan Yuan Jing ripped off his clothes layer by layer.
Jing smiled. “Baby, isn’t it obvious? We’re going to consummate our marriage!”
You-you- Oi, I’m a man!!” He was scared to the point couldn’t even speak clearly.
“I’m a man, too! So I think you know very well what I’m about to do, right?”

Pfttt! The Emperor is a Psycho!!

Sadistic lover. A devil with the face of an angel.
A twisted romance of brutal and dysfunctional relationship. Be ready for multiple stab wounds on your poor heart.

This book left a bitter aftertaste. Yet I am appreciative of the author's skill at manipulating the fragile human heart. I am also grateful for the author's effort to keep the story real. So real, it left an indelible mark on my mind. To me this meant the author is successful in his/her work since their main aim should be to grasp the reader's mind and mold it to their own desired shape. A book that is able to control the psyche of its reader is a winner. That's how I see it. And this book had subjected me to various onslaught of intense emotions of amusement, joy, fear, anger, sadness, disgust, frustration, anticipation, surprise, expectation and last but not least love. Yes, love even-though this is a very brutal romance story which I had nearly lost hope of finding a flicker of romance within its pages. Some might reject the ideal of romance in this story due to Jing's (seme/antagonist) violent and selfish way of pursuing love and also Lu Cang's (uke/protagonist) seemingly masochist acceptance of abuse from his lover. To be fair, I too could not exactly shake off the possibility of Stockholm Syndrome in play as I did find it hard to see how Lu Cang as broken as a battered rag doll could ever find in his heart to forgive Jing's incessant cruelty upon this mind and body. Nevertheless how ever twisted their love is, love is still the catalyst of their tragedious joining. Sigh such highly dysfunctional relationship this pair has. I am still worried for Lu Cang's future even upon finishing the book. Afterall, to serve the king is like accompanying a tiger. (famous Chinese proverb).

The version I read was in Chinese Text via TTS (text-to-speech). If you are interested, you could try the fan translations in English here: [Click Me]. I am not sure how the translation fairs but I do believe the real thing is surely better than a translated copy. For the record, I have read the manga adaptation up to volume no. 5 and am keen on reading its next installment. The artwork is not bad and so far the story sticks with the original novel.

I had to think for a while how to rate this...
This was my second M/M book ever, and my first historical M/M settled in ancient China. I should say historical-ish, since none of the characters actually existed and it has a fantasy element as well.

The unfinished manga made me read the book.
So... my review.... there is a lot of rape, a lot of torture, the emperor is a bloody sadistic maniac. How I felt about it? Hmm...Well...

I loved every second of it, and I'm not even sorry.

description

Everything is ridiculous in this book, from the Stockholm syndrome to the way Jin goes AWOL from the palace even if he is an emperor and needs to bloody rule the place, to the constant shifts in attitude in the uke -Lu Cang- from every single sex scene to every single interaction with a side character. I don't remember muttering so many times in my life "What the f**k?" while reading a book.
If you came here in search for a decent plot, you have to look elsewhere.
Let's be serious, the only reason you may want to read this book is to be able to brag you have read HHYL and you have survived with your wits intact. If you manage to survive reading this book, then you are a stronger person.
I would recommend this book to anyone. Red wine combined with HHYL makes the story even better.
Enjoy!

THE ONLY CHINESE NOVEL THAT DISAPPOINTED ME!

Although I am obsessed with Chinese literature, gay-themed or not, and read all the translated novels I could find, this one resists me. I don't know where it failed (if we don't count the loathsome/horrendous characters, the pointless/bland ramblings, the spineless/unrealistic intrigue and the oh-so-irritating narration/translation), but I never did complete the read and didn't want to. I read it some time ago and don't remember how many chapters I read but they weren't many. Something was definitely not for my liking in the overall atmosphere of the book. My mind drifted away at some point and I put an end on the torture.

Although a lot of readers recommend it, it's not for me and I recommend you not to waste your time on this. There are so much better books to read in this world!

I get the hype, really. But to me, some smut scenes felt unnecessary and I don't think all the r*ping was justified in the end except by the fact that the ML was just an asshole and we can't do nothing about it.

That aside, from chapter 1-12 I was hooked, but when Luo Cang was brought to the palace and became a guard the plot turned kinda predictable.

The dog scene with the pill was peek entertainment tho and I loved the author's distorted sense of humor.

I have absolutely no clue as to how to rate this book.
I read an English version, translated by multiple people, which did not go well with my reading experience of the story. (the explanations, within the story, with a bit of banter from a translator threw me completely off)

I was gripped by the story, but it didn't flow nicely, I didn't connect with the characters, and I had trouble with the names. Still it gripped me, I have no clue why...

It wasn't good, but it wasn't bad either, it was confusing.

I don't know how to rate this. It's like watching a train wreck; horrible and gory, but I couldn't stop reading it. The so-called romance was more of abusive, non-con, dysfunctional D/s relationship. I think you have to shift your way of thinking if you want to read and accept this couple.

I had this in my TBR for a long time. I thought the blurb was intriguing, however it is extremely disappointing to see that the narration/writting style is not to my taste. I found it juvenile, not flowing well, with cringey dialogue. Those elements are the least ones I want to see in a story with such themes. I thought it might be the fan translation but from other comments it appears the original text is just the same. A pity. Perhaps the manhua adaptation is better.

Actual rating: 3.5 stars

I started reading this with full knowledge that it was going to be a dark story and was not disappointed at all. Furthermore, I ended up liking it more than I thought I would, what can I say, I'm a fan of dog blood drama.

Honestly I felt really bad for Lu Cang (MC) because he wasn't even the one kidnapping maidens, it was his subordinates who did that with the intention of finding him a wife. And that was how his ill-fated encounter with Xuan Yuan Jing (ML) or just Jing for short happened. Jing was a good emperor that took care of his country and ensured that it flourished and it wasn't like he was a tyrant or anything. But he was crazy and had a tendency for extremely rough sex, even if it meant raping his partner(s). It was even mentioned that some of his partners had died from his sexual acts.

And LC who was this tough Jianghu bandit, stubborn and prideful, was just the type that whetted and fulfilled Jing's unusual sexual appetite. Initially I thought that Jing was being too unreasonable for 'punishing' LC at such extremes but it was only much later that it was revealed that LC was but a mere substitute for Jing's true love, who also happened to be his uncle. Yeah... Ancient China things y'know.

Jing did some really fucked up things, he tortured and abused LC and almost killed him even, and even though LC was almost always resistant towards Jing, he eventually grew to have romantic feelings for Jing. Stockholm syndrome was strong in this novel and I *know* that Jing was unforgivable, the same way that LC knew that he had suffered immensely in Jing's hands but like him, I too thought Jing was one charming bastard. I know, I know. This makes no sense right? But I blame the unreliable narrator that is LC.

Like I *hate* myself for even thinking that Jing was decent towards the end of the story after he realised his true feelings for LC, but again, LC was an unreliable narrator who fell for Jing first, and even though LC had left Jing several times in hopes of living a peaceful life with his sworn brothers, he couldn't help but ache and long for Jing. This is a story with complex morality and when it comes down to how LC and Jing felt for each other at the end, I don't think there's a clear distinction between what's right and wrong. LC legit went from thinking that he wanted to escape from Jing at all costs to thinking that even if he couldn't stay forever with Jing, he would cherish whatever time they had together.. Like.. there's just so much to unpack and I don't want to do that.

Overall, I did enjoy this even though some parts of it made me uncomfortable, specifically when Jing was being a sadistic demon. I really liked LC too, he was definitely a complicated character. But there was a lack of character development on Jing's part. He was still a demon up until the end, the only difference was that he realised he had some romantic feelings for LC, which was kind of disappointing but also on-brand. One thing that I really wanted to see was Jing apologising to LC but we couldn't even have that.

At last the monster came to his knees!! Jing was downright the most sadistic person in the whole book.
Some scenes were a little hard to believe but this was kind of different read.

I actually dont know how Lu Can is still alive after bleeding and being torn repeatedly and with no medical attention afterwards. But all hail the magic arse I guess?

I still disliked Jing, even in the end he was pretty mean and selfish and Lu Can definitely had Stockholm syndrome because why else would he fall in love with such a unstable and cruel man? Oh because he was pretty? (Lu constantly says tha Jing has a face he can't resist, even after Jing beats him and tears him and makes him bleed repetedly) Dam Lu, you're so shallow if that's the case.

Needless to say by my rating I still enjoyed the story and was rather entretained and hoped that Lu Can would either die(from one of the many rapeings) or kill himself so that Jing can understand that people aren't toys (and that lube exists! Like seriously!! Or maybe Lu was being overdramatic since he was walking and doing things as normal in the next paragraph after fainting from the "horrifically painful wounds Jing inflicted and then would let Jing do it all over again and complain he was gonna die if Jing had him again but he didn't and kept going without even a limp... so... was it actually painful or is Lu exagerating? (Since he would constantly "almost vomit blood" from his anger...We shall never know.)
But I didn't get my wish and they sorta have a happy ending which I didn't quite buy but oh well, it was still quite an engaging read but probably not the way the author intended it to be.

The first part and the second part were like two completely different books. In the first part Jing is just essentially a malicious, cruel rapist and the reason Lu Cang is in love with Jing is solely because Jing is otherworldly beautiful. Then in the second part, their beginning is just completely ignored and they're suddenly all lovey-dovey. This was bad, nothing was resolved, there was no growth or reasons given for why they were interested in each other and the rape scenes were mildly torturous to read. My favorite part of this book was the translator's note on the origin of the Chinese idiom "the meeting of dew".

Summary: Lu Cang is a bandit mountain king and his sworn brothers bring him a bride. Jing disguised himself as a woman to teach the bandits a lesson and on their wedding night, Jing rapes Lu Cang instead. Jing then blackmails Lu Cang and continues to rape him throughout the first part but Lu Cang is in love with Jing's face despite it all.

Um she was kinda really bad...
She as in this danmei. This aint it chief. Very non consensual and made me feel uncomfortable when I read it. I was frustrated with the ML all the time because of his shitty personality and for how he treated MC and I wad mad at MC for still staying with him at the end. I think their relationship was very unhealthy and had bad foundations. They would have been better off without eachother.

This is really porn with plot. Though the plot just ... 20%. The emperor is the usual emperor (the bastard one I mean. And he is the ml. Duh) and their sex hotness .... 3.8/5 for me. Because it kinda lack of detail what they felt during their intercourse except pain and pleasure.

This book lives rent free in my head. It’s my bread and butter, the peanut butter to my jelly, etc etc etc. Sadistic Prince x Unfortunate Bandit wasn’t a trope I knew I needed but after re-reading this about 3 times I can get behind it. Angst galore. Also that ending? *chefs kiss*
