He’s been on the run since that terrible night three years ago, when he killed three adult men... including his own father. Every time he blacks out, someone dies.
When a dog begins following him on the road, Daniel begins to feel almost normal, not counting the dreams about his cousin Kayla asking him to return home.
“You can save us all,” she tells him.
Daniel knows he can’t save anyone.
As he travels through the Midwest, the hitchhiker in Daniel’s head leaves a trail of blood in his wake. When escape doesn’t seem possible, he will have to decide if his destiny lies home, in Wolf Point.
Kate Spofford grew up in Massachusetts and is currently a librarian in New Hampshire. She is the author of the young adult contemporary companion novels Bethany Caleb and The Art Kids, as well as the paranormal / urban fantasy series Wolf Point.
This began as a short story I wrote when I was 17, about a boy with another personality named Billy who was telekinetic and killed his whole family. I was in a bit of a writing slump and pulled that old story out, and decided to make Dan's other personality be a werewolf and make Dan be in total denial about it.
I had originally intended this to be a standalone novel, but the more I thought about the ending, the more I felt that while Dan's story might be complete, there was a larger story being told that needed to continue... so there will be more!
This was also the first time I really turned off that inner editor that says you shouldn't swear in young adult books. Therefore I recommend this for ages 16+.

Okay so I never really review books but wow. Just wow. I was absolutely blown away by Hitchhikers. It was a super refreshing view on werewolves that was much needed me for. Characters, especially Daniel, was relatable and easy to sympathize with. A lot of novels about werewolves now a days and they are so cliche and predictable, with characters not acting the way a normal person would. But this novel was amazing and unique. I absolutely loved it and can't wait for the next book. To huge thank you to the author Kate Spofford, oyu renewed my faith in werewolves.
A quick read and a fun one! Even the travelling and hitch hiking scenes continued to be interesting and never felt dull or repetitive. The ending left a satisfying taste in the mouth for both conclusion and for the cliffhanger of a sequel.
I really enjoyed this and will definitely be buying the next in the series. Had I known it was a werewolf story, I probably wouldn't have bothered with it, but I was pleasantly surprised that I was enjoying the read, and really got into the characters.
I received a free book version of HITCHHIKERS from the author in exchange for an honest review.
To be honest, I put off reading this book because I was worried that it would be another typical werewolf story. However, I am very glad that I finally decided to read it. Yes, it is a werewolf novel, but it is unique. It is not a typical teen-romance/werewolves are so sexy story. This one is definitely worth reading.
At the age of 13 Daniel did something horrible. Since then he has been on the run. He is homeless and starving. He is tired and lonely and he's scared.
He has black-outs and when he comes back to consciousness, he is usually covered in blood. Often, there is a dead body nearby. Sometimes the body is that of an animal, but all too often the body is that of a person.
Daniel has no memory of hurting anyone. All he remembers is being excruciatingly hungry, or scared. Daniel hitchhikes and unfortunately for him, he is often picked up by predators or pedophiles. He has developed a sixth sense about a person and has gotten much better at spotting, and thus avoiding the weirdos.
However, he has been on the run for three years and he is starting to wonder if it might be safe for him to return home.
He wants to know what is wrong with him. He wants to know how to stop from killing people. He needs to learn what is happening to him and how he can control it.
Daniel's journey is one of self-discovery. Even though he is a killer, the reader cannot help but feel bad for him. He is obviously just a scared kid who wants to do the right thing.
Can Daniel ever return home? Will he ever figure out what is happening to him? Will his abusive childhood turn him into a remorseless killer or will his better nature prevail?
This book is one that once you start reading, you will not want to stop.
I was impressed that the author was able to conjure a new werewolf tale that does not follow the typical romantic story line.
I rate this book as 4 out of 5 stars and I am looking forward to reading the next book in the series.
Hitchhikers is the first of the Wolf Point books by Kate Spofford and follows Daniel on the end of his three year homeless journey.
Daniel is running from the hitchhiker in his head, a mysterious, bloodthirsty psychopath killer that randomly takes over when he blacks out, waking to the blood and death of people he doesn't know. After three years on the run, his life consists of surviving from one day to the next. He meets Lila, a faithful dog, and just keeps running. When he starts getting dreams of his cousin Kayla, he realizes that there may be more to this blackout thing than he thought.
He's a werewolf. The prophesied savior of his pack. And he doesn't know how to handle that.
I liked Hichhikers. It was refreshingly different, if a little dark, for the YA paranormal genre. The writing is good and tight, and Daniel is an interesting hero. I couldn't completely connect with him though, which was my biggest problem with the book. It's a fun read though, and I'd recommend it.
Hitchhiker was an interesting take on a warewolf novel. It was different in the fact that Daniel didn’t know he was a warewolf and had no idea what was happening to him when he ‘blacks out’. All he knows is that he turns into a psycho killer and always wakes up to find people dead. Daniel ran away after an incident when he killed his father and 2 uncles at 13. The story follows Daniel in the 3 years that follow. There is a lot of dialogue in Daniel’s mind and he meets some interesting characters along the way – some helpful, some sinister. A stray dog befriends him along the way who he names her Lila. His cousin Kayla keeps popping up in his dreams a lot and it takes her for him to realise he is a warewolf. Overall I enjoyed it but felt it did drag in parts.
