My kids and I all love each book we’ve read from the Smithsonian Backyard series. We have purchased many for our own library at home. All of the books are realistic in both storyline and illustrations. They are engaging with a storybook feel, and pack in just enough interesting nonfiction facts which are told naturally throughout the book. The illustrations are detailed and beautiful, with plenty of colors and interesting elements. This particular book follows the day of a red fox father as he hunts for food, plays with his kits, and protects his family.
Another pleasant volume from the Smithsonian's Backyard series - as always, the illustrations here hold the real appeal. The text is pretty basic, as is of course appropriate for young children, but I feel as if there wasn't as much natural and scientific detail given here as there is in some of the other books in this series. Still, the baby foxes are very cute.
What I like about this series is they are truthful. They speak of the fox killing the rabbit and mouse without showing it. Very discreet and beautiful books with honest information about nature.
