Autor přibližuje počáteční nadšení a odhodlání budovat socialismus. V krátkých ...more

Nějak se mi to hodně líbilo. Nedokážu přesně říct proč, prostě to tak cítím... :)

As is the case in much of the rest of the former Soviet bloc, post-war Czechoslovakia’s actually existing socialism (AES) was not such a barrel of laughs – a lot of which might have been to do with being post-war, not AES itself, but we can’t really separate the two. Some, after all, would argue that it was the state of being post-war that brought about the condition of AES; others, perhaps less sympathetic might be more inclined to use the increasingly common language of the ‘putsch’ as ...more

This was an interesting, atmospheric read, a stream-of-consciousness-like sort of rumination on life during the early years of postwar Czechoslovak Communism. It wasn't always easy to follow, but I think that readers with a reasonable knowledge (need not be a deep one) of postwar Czechoslovakia will find it rewarding, as will other readers willing to engage with a book written in this manner. The illustrations are an added benefit and are evocative and well suited to the text. It is good to see ...more

This is an impressionistic account of disillusionment with Communism, written in the 1950s by one who had been a true believer at the time of the Communist coup in Czechoslovakia, "Victorious February" 1948. Jedlicka depicts the closing down of minds and opportunities, the degradation of work and speech, the betrayal of human potential and decency. Though many of his references may be obscure to a 21st century reader in English, his disgust and sadness come through, ably translated by Alex ...more
