I’m confused about the fact that, did I really read the same book that all these other reviewers seem to have read and seem to love?
The writing was so bad; everything that happened was just to make the book and the story move forward instead of it meaning anything. The characters were so immature and childish and not well written and why was everybody rolling their eyes? Every time I read that I wanted to roll my eyes by how lazy the writing was
I really should have just put the book down at like 10% in when I knew I wasn’t going to like it and kept getting easily distracted.
I want to apologize to anyone who liked Greek Mythology, this book butchered it an did it dirty.

Received an early copy of this as an ARC and I loved it!! It’s game of thrones meets ACOTAR meets Pirates of the Caribbean, set in magical Greek isles, with pirate ships and training and battles, so many twists and betrayals; love, spice, heartbreak, tension, friendships, an adorable feline sidekick. Once I got sucked into this world I didn’t want to do anything else but read. One of my favorite romantasy reads. Everyone should add to their TBR and get a copy when it comes out in September!

Why? Because if you're looking for a book that will have you glued to the pages even at your granny's birthday party (yes, I was actually reading under the table), A Wrecking of Salt and Fire is it! This book had me hooked from the first page, and I devoured it in less than 48 hours.
What is it about? Katrin Drakos, who should have been focusing on becoming Queen of Alentus and preparing to marry her Fated, Khol (asshole). But when a notorious pirate captures her and the vile King Nikolaos of Nexos threatens her peace, Katrin is thrust into a whirlwind of rebellion and secrets that could change everything. The stakes? Oh, just the power of all the gods and the fate of her kingdom. And probably all the kingdoms. No biggie, right? 🤷🏻♀️
The world is a beautifully crafted tapestry of myth and reality. The author's descriptions make every setting—from the opulent royal courts to the gritty pirate ships—spring to life. You can almost taste the salt in the air and feel the fire in the hearth. It's a world where magic and politics intertwine, and every detail is well thought-out, making the story all the more immersive. Ahhh, the awesome foreshadowing and delicious easter eggs! 🤌
The characters are the heart and soul of this book, though. We get three POVs: Ember, Katrin, and Khol. Ember stole my heart—fierce, brave, and so easy to root for. Katrin had me teetering on the edge; one moment I adored her, the next I wanted to scream at her. I still loved her, don’t come at me!
And Khol? From chapter one, I knew he was bad news. By the 60% mark, I was rolling my eyes so hard every time his POV came up, I feared they'd get stuck (I’m fine, though). But credit where it's due—the fact that Khol evoked such strong feelings is a testament to the author's incredible ability to craft compelling characters.
Ander, sweet Ander, what a journey you had, my poor baby! 😭 My heart broke, and I'm STILL piecing it back together.
Ajax, well, let's just say that Ember isn't the only one smitten. 👀
The book doesn't shy away from heavy topics—trauma is a central theme, but E.K. Condos handles it with care and sensitivity. It might be heart-wrenching at times, but it's also a powerful exploration of female strength and resilience. The emotional depth adds a significant layer to the story, making it more than just an adventure but a moving and healing experience.
In conclusion, this is one GEM of a book!
If you're looking for a read that will sweep you off your feet and leave you begging for the sequel, this is it. I'm eagerly awaiting book two, and if it's anything like the first, my granny's next birthday might see a repeat performance of me reading under the table.

3.8⭐️s Here’s what I really enjoyed: the pirates + Greek mythology combo is a fun new mix. The plot and politics are interesting. The multiple POVs kept me very engaged.
However- there’s just something that felt a little clunky about the pacing. I think it really could have been a five star read with some more editing.
Also- the spice could have been completely omitted. Neither the story or the characters needed it. It was awkward and sort of gave me whiplash with it happening all of the sudden. ESPECIALLY with the really intense sexual trauma descriptions (TW!!) and then the FMC was just like ready to get into it WHILE she was intoxicated?? nah.
Undecided about continuing the series.

Holy cow. I LOVED this book!! If I had not found the author on instagram and watched her journey of writing A Wrecking of Salt and Fire, I would never have guessed this was her debut novel. The Pirates of the Caribbean vibes hooked me immediately, and I’m so grateful I got the chance to read the arc. But now, I don’t know how I’m going to wait for the next book in the series. 😭
I loved the world-building, and the nod to Pirates of the Caribbean with the was a great touch too. 😉
I really enjoyed Katrin’s character though it was heartbreaking to see her keep her trauma bottled up- She did open up to her sister, Ember, a little but not much.
I liked that when it came down to keeping her sister safe, Ember was ready to step up and take her role as Prytan serious.
Khol freaking sucks. I wholeheartedly feel that he does not deserve a redemption arc. He gave off vibes, but honestly, he might be worse…
Manipulative ass.
The ending was 🤯 for several reasons. The cliffhanger was top tier. Like I said earlier, I need book 2. 😭

I think I read a different book than everyone else because???? The writing was painfully juvenile. The pacing was all over the place and made no sense. Like Katrin goes from hating Kohl at the end to just….. “oh look I married him!!!” Even if it was for the people… like please lead up to that? And the months on the ship were like 5 chapters and only 3 conversations with Ander but those really left her looooooonging. The entire magic system and backstory with the Olympi was so confusing and even the islands made little sense to me in the end and I think most of that was because I was so over it. I get that usually there are secrets that the MMC keeps and that’s what causes so many issues but she literally gave us NOTHING. Nothing…. Ander only told her he loved her and that was all we got. No explanation for anything lol. I’m very disappointed because it could have been great.

Honestly very close to 5 stars for me!!! I'm so excited I finally got into a book again after a long slump.
I am enjoying the Greek mythology bit of this. I am also learning I love an islands and boats world, so that's a huge plus.
FMC is likeable and MMC is giving me Rhys vibes (20/10 for me). I loved how much this book focuses on the world and plot. The romance was amazing too but it didn't feel like the whole point. The back stabbing and double crossing was top notch and the plot twists had me goingggg at the end! Quickly on to book 2.

I loved the world building in this. A mix of Pirates of the Caribbean and Greek Mythology. I was drawn in pretty early on. Katrin is fated to marry Kohl, her childhood love, and become queen. Unexpectedly she is kidnapped by a mysterious pirate. As the story unravels she begins to question who to trust. Lots of secrets and betrayal. I loved the romances in this book. I don’t want to dive into too many details to avoid spoilers.
I love how the author focuses on multiple characters throughout the story. I’m very invested in Ember and Ajax as well. I really enjoyed the storyline surrounding Katrin’s past trauma and her journey to healing. Her overall character growth and resilience was inspiring.
If you’re looking for a high seas adventure full of betrayal and a cliffhanger look no further.

Not a huge fan. I read half and then realized this is a series and I try not to begin series that are far from being complete. I wasn’t loving this story anyway, so I skimmed the rest. It is good, just not great. The author gave everyone crazy trauma, which is supposed to translate to character depth, but it felt manufactured to me. Or maybe I just didn’t like it. FYI…I HATED kohl from the beginning. 😉

I was WOWed by this novel. I love that it’s not just one person whose story you’re following, but a few of them. And they all feel like they hold equal weight. Katrin is on a journey to become queen, as is her birthright, but when an unknown enemy comes and kidnaps her, she’s on a fight to escape and get back to her lands. Her betrothed is taking care of her lands, but his plans may not be what she wanted. Katrin’s sister is also fighting to keep their lands together and safe. Enemies pile up all over the place and no on is who you thought they were. This book is unputdownable. A definite five-star read! You don’t want to miss this one!

3.5 and I'll read the next one. Was lost for the first 20% of the book and some rushed world building made parts really confusing, but the vibes were vibing!

I genuinely don’t get how so many people loved this book because I was so bored. The writing felt clunky and kind of lazy, like every scene only existed to move the plot along instead of actually meaning anything. Nothing felt natural. The characters were so immature, and not in a fun or intentional way, just underdeveloped. The whole story felt weirdly familiar. I literally paused to check if I had already read it before because it felt that unoriginal.
The pacing was all over the place. Huge info dump. Then nothing. Then sudden chaos. Then random lore. Then vibes. Then confusion. I felt like I was getting smacked with world-building details and then immediately dropped into scenes with zero explanation. There are four supposed main characters, but we only get three POVs? Why set that up and not follow through?
The most frustrating part is that the concept actually had potential. The ideas were there. But the execution was messy and the editing did it no favors. Character motivations made no sense. People were fully in love one minute, kidnapped the next, running away dramatically, and then deciding to stay like nothing happened. No emotional buildup. No processing. Just constant jumping around.
It honestly reads like important details were cut out and never replaced. Big reveals get mentioned but never actually shown. And some of the plot holes are wild. I wanted it to make sense. By the end I was mostly just confused and annoyed.

This was so good! The world building and magic were really interesting, and I can't wait to learn more about it in the rest of the series! I also thought it was paced well and really liked the way things played out. the invasion against atlantea was never explained properly

why did she marry kohl???
overall I did enjoy it and finished it quite fast.

I devoured this!! The story drew me in, and I adored Katrin and Anders. Katrin, a goddess, is on a journey to claim her powers, marry her soulmate, and overcome the trauma of her past. Anders, the mysterious pirate captain, was an instant favorite. With Greek gods, multiple POVs, slow burn romance, rebellion, and pirate ships, this book checked all my boxes. The side characters added depth and richness to the story. I was fully invested, and the cliffhanger has me desperate for book two. I'm excited to see where the story goes next.

Holy freaking moly, this book was a HOOK. As soon as we get rolling through these pages, we find ourselves in a Greek inspired world full of magic and mythos annnnnnnnd mischievous misdirection. Wow. Wow. Wow.
We follow 3 POVs in AWOSAF: Katrin, Kohl, and Ember. Each POV was so so good and hurtful and full of action and emotion. Katrin is the rising queen of her kingdom about to come into her power and marry her childhood love. Kohl is said childhood love from an ambiguous kingdom and, while his actions and his loyalty to his father are sometimes questionable and his poor soul is easily malleable, his main interest at heart is Katrin… and Ember, Katrin’s sister, and underestimated younger sister in line for the next Prytan (leader of the army) with her own myriad of troubles.
There’s so much going on and multiple romances, forbidden love, unrequited love, passion, frustration, angst, hurt, tension, support, and hope that trying to put it in a review wouldn’t do this book justice. How Emily maneuvered through these characters is phenomenal. Not to mention the Greek mythology and lore is so good!! There are so many villains, possible villains, love interests, allis but are they good or not? If you want a story that will hook you in until it’s finished and leaves you staring at a wall and trying to function, this is for you!
And please read trigger warnings because Emily moves through really tough topics. It is so well done but a bit graphic, so your health is of the utmost.
Tropes you may find in AWOSAF are “good girl”, arranged marriage, forbidden love, fated mates, intriguing world and magic building, Greek mythos and gods, “who did this to you?”, knife to throat, multiple romances, plot twists, hidden identities, high stakes, spice 1.5/5, shadow daddy, pirates, and a cliffhanger.

How Emily maneuvered through these characters is phenomenal. Not to mention the Greek mythology and lore is so good!! There are so many villains, possible villains, love interests, allis but are they good or not? If you want a story that will hook you in until it’s finished and leaves you staring at a wall and trying to function, this is for you!
And please read trigger warnings because Emily moves through really tough topics. It is so well done but a bit graphic, so your health is of the utmost.
Tropes you may find in AWOSAF are “good girl”, arranged marriage, forbidden love, fated mates, intriguing world and magic building, Greek mythos and gods, “who did this to you?”, knife to throat, multiple romances, plot twists, hidden identities, high stakes, spice 1.5/5, shadow daddy, pirates, and a cliffhanger.

I devoured this book! I could not get enough and I need the next book like, now. This book was raw and the last 10% had me SHOOK! Haunted by her past, Katrin is trying to heal from her trauma and focus on her upcoming marriage to Kohl and getting crowned Queen. Before any of that can happen, she is captured by pirates and finds herself on the sea bringing all of her past trauma to the surface. The plot twists in this book are so twisty you never know who is friend and who is foe. Who is really after Katrin’s crown? Desperate to get back to her sister, Ember, and her people, she realizes just a little too late that nothing is as it seems.
This is Pirates of the Caribbean meets Iliad. It has gods, pirates, and sorcerers. The world building and character development is perfectly intertwined into the book. It is high stakes and action packed. Just be sure to check the trigger warnings and expect a brutal cliffhanger.

Wow!… So many thoughts about this epic high seas fantasy. Very Pirates of the Caribbean meets Greek mythology vibes, very captivating and unique in its world building.
I absolutely loved the trauma rep in this and Katrin’s character development between what happened to her, what’s expected of her as the next Queen and how the truth of her reality challenges her. As well as the connections she makes along the way who give her a safe place to start healing some of these pieces. It’s not just some feat she gets over but a constant battle that will remain apart of her. Very real in addressing that topic. 🙌🏻
And the other characters, Ajax and Ember… I have HIGH hopes for them in book 2. And Ander.. 😭😭😭 well I’m not quite ready to talk about that. Or the ending..
I tried so hard to pay attention and figure out how this was gonna end but I was still caught off guard by that cliffhanger, I had absolutely no idea what was to come and I loved that. The secrets and mystery throughout the book was excellently executed leaving you suspicious but still in the dark.
The only thing I wanted more of was the banter/dialogue and lengthier action scenes. Otherwise it was quite riveting 🤌🏻

I really wanted to like this, but it was poorly executed. the characters were what made me continue the story. if this author had made this book longer, developed the world and plot a bit more it would have been a fantastic fantasy. I just don't think what the author wanted to accomplish could be done in such a short book.
I did enjoy katrin, and I found the authors depiction of trauma and PTSD done well, especially the flashback. khol, I absolutely hated, and he absolutely assaulted her so any point after that I didn't want any of his POVs to be honest. her sister I liked on the surface but we just didn't really get any depth into the character, or their family so its sorta hard for me to care about them. we barely interact or get the know katrin's parents or the court. were told to hate a certain court but I don't feel like we're ever really told why. I also enjoyed ander, but there's just too many things the author withholds from the reader simply to withhold information from the reader. like it doesn't really serve any greater purpose. by the end of the book I was still so confused by the magic system, the islands, the political system, etc. it was just massively disappointing for me

I’ve been eagerly anticipating this book for quite some time, so I was thrilled to receive an email confirming my role as an ARC reader! I’ll keep this review spoiler-free.
AWOSAF did not disappoint. Based on the snippets the author shared - I had high expectations, and the book delivered on all fronts. After reading The Ever King, I’ve been searching for a captivating pirate fantasy, and this novel hit the mark perfectly.
Initially, it took a moment to fully immerse myself in the world, but once it picked up, the story became engaging and easy to follow. As a fan of Greek mythology, I was especially pleased with how well the author wove this element into the narrative.
Katrin, the protagonist, is an incredibly resilient character who has faced significant trauma. I appreciated how the author addressed this trauma with sensitivity and depth throughout the story.
If you enjoy tales of pirates, gods and magic, this book is a must read. It also features some of my favorite tropes, including forced proximity, enemies to lover, high stakes, and multiple POV.

DNF- I WANTED to love it. I really, REALLY did. A pirate romanticy, Gods, magic, political unrest, impending war. I mean, I am here. for. it. all!
I felt the writing style was very elementary. I had a difficult time connecting with any of the characters. No substance to characters interactions. Just all around terrible!
At page 43 I texted my book friends concerned it was going to be a slog asking if I should quit. They said "Do it! Life is to short for shitty books!" I couldn't do it though, I wanted to believe it would get better! Today at page 293 I'm jumping ship and wishing I would have done it at 43.

I was very hesitant to read this at first but I ultimately committed and I'm glad I did.
I was surprised by how into this book I got. It is not a perfect book but I enjoyed the ride. I cannot wait for book 2. I almost wish I had waited a little bit longer so I would have less time before book 2.
Maybe I just have a thing for pirates (and privateers) now but that's when I realized how much I loved the book.

I went into this book excited. PIRATES. FATED MATES. BETRAYALS. WAR. GREEK MYTHOLOGY. This had all the ingredients to chemically rewire my brain. Instead I spent most of this book staring into the void asking myself why I was being personally attacked.
Let us begin.
The characters:
Some of them were fine. Shout to Ember and Katrin. Some were ok. And then there’s Kohl. Kohl, my good sir. My enemy. My sleep paralysis demon. I mean I love a good villain and this book had a few but Kohl was too much. It wasn’t that he was bad or whatever. He is villain. I get it. I dislike him because the things he did literally made no freaking sense. He was literally a whole ass different person after like 20 pages in the book! I get what the story is pushing but it was just so rushed. Like a literal switch was flipped. Every time he showed up on page after that I felt my soul leave my body. I don’t want character growth. I want distance. I want space. I want him gone. Permanently.
The writing:
This book was doing parkour. Information dumps. Then nothing. Then chaos. Then lore. Then vibes. Then confusion. I felt like I was being pelted with world-building bricks and then abandoned in an emotional desert. Pick a lane. Any lane. Please.
The pacing:
Explain to me why this book was sprinting like it stole something and then suddenly lying on the floor refusing to move. I got pacing whiplash. I got emotional whiplash. I got regular whiplash. The Energizer Bunny wishes it had this kind of stamina and confusion.
THE POV SITUATION:
We got POVs from THREE out of FOUR main characters. THREE. OUT OF FOUR. And somehow ANDER did not get one.
Why. Why would you do this. There were so many moments where his POV would have been crucial, meaningful, emotionally devastating, helpful to literally everyone involved. Instead I am out here piecing together his motivations like a conspiracy theorist with red string on a corkboard.
I have questions.
I will not be getting answers.
I am suffering.
Things I actually liked before anyone calls the authorities:
– Katrin (FMC): She is carrying this book on her back like a soldier. Her story is heartbreaking and heavy. Please check trigger warnings because wow. She deserved a calmer book than the one she was trapped in.
– Greek mythology elements: Interesting! Unique! Occasionally confusing but still cool in concept. I was intrigued even when I was also overwhelmed.
Final thoughts:
Am I continuing?
Yes.
Why?
Because I do not DNF series. Ever. This is both a personality trait and a character flaw. I will be finishing this out of stubbornness, curiosity, and what might actually be masochism.
