I needed a light historical romantic romp. Pretty much got what I wanted. Tall, dark and handsome hero. Sweet, sassy and independent heroine. A little trouble in their path. A little mystery I wish had been explored more. Rushed ending left me a little unfulfilled. Overall, a fun weekend read.

The Wickeds’ series started off a little slow but is improving by leaps and bounds. This one is more of a story with a romance than just a romance, this was solid, entertaining and fun.
Perfect Petra was a pill in the last book, Wickedly Yours, but showed promise at the end. Here she hits her stride as a Regency milk and water miss who wakes up to how little power she has and is not happy about it. Her rebellion starts off small, but she takes her fate in her hands in a believable way. Luckily she has her hunky, handsome hero to help break her fall from grace.
Her horrible managing mother is at it again, and wants Petra to settle down with a promising Lord with political aspirations. They are off for a visit in Derbyshire with his awful family where Petra realizes she would have her work cut out with a potentially indifferent husband, a cold lush for a MIL and a shark for a SIL.
She gave Katherine a perfect, ladylike smile. Petra already possessed the most difficult sister-in-law in all of London, and didn’t feel the need for a second, should things come to that.
The hero enters left, and I can’t help but think that Aiden Turner was the inspiration for the hero. Can’t find any fault with that!
Romance is one aspect of the story, and the other is the rivalry and hostility between the hero and Petra’s future fiancee. Nice little mystery unfolds with emotional drama and growth along the way.
Lots of despicable characters to add salt to the soup as well as the hero’s very nice mother with her own tragic past. She’s been widowed three times and as a reader I wanted her to find some happiness. Turns out she has her own romance coming soon, so good for her.
The book also provides some nice local color and information on a semi-precious mineral called Blue John mined in Derbyshire that the mystery is centered on.
Derbyshire looks like a nice place to visit.

This is my first read by Mrs Kathleen Ayers and she did an awesome job with this one read, despite it being the fifth installment in a series, I never felt lost and I am left with only one feeling, read more from her.
I loved the subtle humor injected in the many situations, the handling of the many characters as all were not whom they first appeared to be.
At the beginning I was not very found at the portrayed prim and proper Petra, Perfect Petra as Brendan nicknamed her, yet her thoughts were more daring than her actions. She appeared as meek and weak while being the obedient with no personal opinion daughter.
And she needed time to let her inner self take control of her polished one.
I was for long upset at her being a doormat, it was not her one or two outbursts that were proof of a strong willed woman. Yet slowly, one day at a time, she began to grow bit by bit. Without knowing it at first, thanks to Brendan getting her out of her mind, he helped her realize how they let everyone decides for her, never asking what she would want.
Brendan has a jaded vision of love, having grown up with a mother mourning endlessly her late husband, he sees it more than an affliction than a blessing. Why he ran away as fast as he could after his first encounter with Petra, refusing the feelings she stirs from him.
Why he plays hot and cold when they meet again.
It was an entertaining read to see they reach for the other while in same time trying to keep their distance, reasoning with themselves about what they sought really for them and from the other.

Having spent a lifetime under the manipulative thumb of her mother, Lady Petra feels a stirring of rebellion in her heart. Determined to have at least some say over her future, she persuades her father to allow her to visit her intended's estate so that she can be more sure of the man she is to marry. Traveling with her mother, when their carriage breaks down with Petra suffering from a stomach ailment, the last thing they expect is to be rescued by the scandalous Earl of Morwick. Her only encounter with Brendan has left her shaken and unsure of herself. Finding that he is their rescuer increases her feelings of discomfort with unexpected results. One can only feel for Petra as she sifts through her feelings and emotions, especially once she is confronted with Lord Pendleton's family. Her own mother's ridiculous behaviour leaves Petra more determined than ever to be mistress of her own future. However, the rule-breaking Lord Morwick makes Petra long for a passion that she could only dream of. With a long history of animosity between Morwick and Pendleton, Brendan is no less enamoured of being cooped up under the same roof as Pendleton, but when Petra requires his rescue once again, Brendan knows that it is time for him to seize his own future. Although not particularly suspenseful, this novel has a thread of tension running through it, keeping the reader totally involved and invested in the undeniable attraction that is simmering between the main characters. The story is well written, is a standalone and comes to a happy conclusion. I received a copy of this book through StoryOrigin as a gift and this is my honest and voluntary review.

Crap on toast! Kathleen lowers the boom, tackling the ton and thrusting regency into the eye of the storm, melding this baby together piece by piece flawlessly. Bumbling through the trials and tribulations, sharp twists, thin corners and sleek lines, testing our characters in ways they could have never anticipated. Yielding incredibly, well rounded scenario's, ramping up the excitement and adrenaline with such intensity and precision, blasting this gem to life spectacularly. Sparks fly as drama, intrigue, danger and suspense ensues in epic proportions. Add turmoil and distress and you have one intense rollercoaster ride. The chemistry builds as each layer is peeled back exposing an undeniable bond and amplifying affections, binding them to one another perfectly. The characters are authentic, genuine and realistic with depth and qualities that blend into amazing personalities. The scenes are strikingly sharp with abundant details and descriptions you have no problem picturing each scenario creating a colorful backdrop that makes the storyline pop. Amazing job Kathleen, thanks for sharing this bad boy with us.

Petra is betrothed to Lord Simon Pendleton but wants to make sure it will be a good match so she travels with her mother to visit him in his home and along the way bumps into Brendon.
They met before this at a ball and interests were stirred then, so you can well imagine what happens when they meet again.
This isn't all there is to this well written story. You will find a murder and a mystery, some rather underhand dealings, love in full passion, a rather nasty potential mother-in-law, parents who betray Petra's trust, a very limp potential husband, another very strong and sexy man and our heroine who is trusting of all until she realizes that that just isn't doing her any good.
This story will keep you going and I really enjoyed all the ins and outs of it.

Brendan & Petra. Thoroughly enjoyed. Our hero and heroine meet at her brother's wedding where he's gawking at her but later she overhears him talking to his mother and saying that she is a dim wit. She confronts him and he's shocked and kisses her but walks away. Fast forward...She's all Miss Prim & Proper raised most of her life to be the perfect nobleman's wife and she snagged one. Simon is an up-and-coming politician, polite and the ton's greatest catch of the season. He's looking for the perfect wife that'll show well as his ambitions take off and she's the one for him. He's offered for her but after seeing her brother Rowan and Arabella's relationship, she wants more and wants to meet him and his family before committing herself to being his wife. Along the way to his country seat, their carriage breaks an axle. Brendan, Earl of Morwick comes upon them. His estate neighbors Simon's estate and it seems the driver had taken a wrong turn and was going the wrong way when they had issues with the axle. He offers them to use one of his men to fix their carriage but they wouldn't be able to make it to Simon's estate before it was too dark so they are invited to stay at his estate. When the axle broke, she got her dress hung up on something in the carriage. She didn't want to rip the dress but Brendan didn't care and ripped it to free her (there's a theme of her dresses getting destroyed in the book). Not feeling well along the way she ends up puking on his boots. He sent for the doctor, she has food poisoning and needs to rest and recuperate for a couple of days. So more delays to get to Simon's. As she recovers they plan to leave the next morning but her mother wakes up and it ends up she also got food poisoning but it delayed making her sick. They are delayed again while her mother (hover mother) is recuperating. Bored she goes exploring and wants to see Mam Tor (Mother hill) she had seen in a painting but it is too far to walk to. She's told that she can see it from the property and is off to look. Being a shortie she can't see it so she decides to climb a tree to get to a better height to see it and it is stunning. She loves the country and the beautiful scenery. He comes upon her and she's having trouble getting down out of the tree so he climbs up to assist her down. Another dress gets destroyed on the climb down. He kisses her again but again pushes her away. His mother, thrice widowed, met her soulmate in Brendan's dad. When he mysteriously disappears and never seen again, she is devastated and mourns hard for years. Seeing how that much love for another person and losing them, he never wanted to love his future wife. This is why he keeps kissing Petra and then pushing her away, saying dumb stuff in an effort to have her hate him and stay away. He's drawn to her and they both cannot stop thinking about each other. Her mom recovers and they finally set out to Simon's estate (Brendan left to a nearby town to do something/hide from Petra). When they arrive, Petra wants to have feelings for Simon but he just wants his demure proper wife who would never be involved in a scandal. They meet his mom and widowed sister Katherine (she definitely has avoided any scandals having been known to have been married and sleeping around London). Someone thought it would be a good idea to throw a house party in Petra's honor (likely announcing her acceptance of their betrothal). Brendan and his mom are invited and he's drawn to Petra all while Katherine is wanting to renew their previous relationship (they were sleeping together when they were younger and he planned to marry her but caught her banging some stable boy and decided to pass; she went on to marry her husband who had died). He wasn't interested but Petra had seen her trying to seduce him and jealousy ensues between each of them. Bored shitless at this house party and tired of her mom and Simon's mom planning her wedding she goes for a walk in the moors and comes across Brendan climbing in a crack (he's into geology and explores the mines and minerals around his home). They are having difficulty hiding their feelings and he tells her that he wants her but he pushes her away again. She gets pissed and storms off but falls through a hole and is stuck in a cave. He tries following her but the hole is small. She sees another hole and is walking towards it when she comes across his dad's body. Brendan makes his way down and sees his father was shot and killed. In his pocket is a survey map that shows Simon's dad had redrawn the lines for their properties and the wealthy mine they have been mining is actually on his property. They return to the estate and he plans on confronting Simon about the murder and survey. She leaves the evening and returns to her room. She's decided she loves Brendan and wants him as much as he wants her. She dawns a sleezy nightgown and goes to his room. He's drinking (torn on what to do about Petra) and she comes to him, and undresses in front of him. His desire is on fire but he still asks to make sure she is sure. She tells him she wants him and doesn't expect anything further from him. They have a steamy evening and she falls asleep with him. He wakes up early while she's still sleeping. She wakes up in his room (her mama finds her there) and finds out that Brendan and his mom had left Simon's estate early that morning. Cat is out of the bag about her being ruined and she asks Simon to release her from their betrothal which he quickly agrees to. He calls her a strumpet and a whore, you know the lovely endearments a girl loves to hear. She asks and he tells her that he didn't feel anything for her (confirming her belief) and that she was the prim, proper, not ugly but doesn't stand out in a room with a large dowry that he was looking for. So romantic! They go to leave for London where she's surly going to be outcast for the gossip about her being ruined (even though Simon and his mother and sister and everyone there have sworn to discretion). Her maid hands her a note from Brendan "Your choices are your own, Petra. I would have you decide your life, not I or Simon and especially not Lady Marsh (her mom). Should you choose not to return to London, I will wait for you. I won't let go. Ever". I totes teared up even though it isn't as romantic as being called a whore. She sends her mom back to London and she heads for Brendan's estate where she finds him in their tree waiting for her. Seems that he had confronted Simon about the murder and property line. Simon agreed to "rent" the mine from Brendan and release Petra from their betrothal contract. They also are sworn to secrecy about Petra because they don't want anything getting out about his dad being murdered and ruining his political ambitions.

Tall, Dark and Wicked is another wonderful instalment in Kathleen Ayers’ ‘The Wickeds’ series.
Lady Petra Grantly has always been seen as the obedient, dutiful and proper daughter of the Earl and Countess of Marsh. She has always followed the dictates of her ambitious mother and moulded herself into the perfect society maiden destined to be the perfect society wife.
But the recent marriages of her cousin Jemma and her brother Rowan brings forth secret longings that she too might find a marriage with love and passion.
Her encounter with Brendan, The Earl of Morwick, at the wedding of her brother rouses feelings Petra has never had before. She is intrigued, excited and confused all at once. The Earl is not polished with the smooth society manners of Petra’s usual acquaintances. He is rude, ill mannered and boorish to her at their first meeting. But she cannot get him out of her mind.
Fast forward six months and Petra is on the brink of fulfilling her mother’s dreams. She is being courted by the very suitable Lord Pendleton and is making a trip to his country seat to meet his family so she can make a final decision. As luck would have it, they are stranded on the way there and rescued by none other than the gentleman Petra cannot shake from her thoughts. Maybe it is time for ‘Perfect Petra’ to finally rebel and follow her own heart.
Brendan, Earl Morwick has always been unconventional. He prefers the country to London, is a keen geologist, liking nothing better than to roam the hills and climb cliff faces than attend balls. He was instantly attracted to Lady Petra but could never imagine that the prim and proper lady would ever want anything to do with him.
Brendan is wary of love after watching his mother grieve for so long at the death of his father. He is terrified of strong emotions and the bond he feels with Petra. When he is forced to offer his hospitality after she and her mother face difficulties on their journey, can he avoid temptation and protect his heart?
I loved this story. The love story between Petra and Brendan was told so well. Their interactions and the way Petra slowly came out of her shell and started to think about her own desires and wishes were very natural. Her rebellion was slow to boil but when she rebelled she did so with a bang!
Brendan in turn had so many layers. I loved the fact that in the end he recognised that any decisions Petra makes has to be her own. She has had so little choice in her life, it had to be her choice which direction her life takes. And the sacrifice he made to give her that choice was truly poignant and to my mind heroic. Brendan is gruff and rough around the edges but truly wonderful.
Add to the mix a house party, Petra’s horrible suitor and equally awful family, the complication of Petra’s imminent betrothal, the machinations of Petra’s mother, the mystery behind Brendan’s father’s disappearance and one Lady Cupps Foster and the story is set for plenty of drama to keep the reader entertained.
I definitely recommend this book to everyone. It truly can be read as a stand alone because although the previous protagonists are mentioned, they do not appear in this story. If you haven’t read the previous books, I’d highly recommend you go and catch up.

Brendan, Earl Morwick has always been unconventional. He prefers the country to London, is a keen geologist, liking nothing better than to roam the hills and climb cliff faces than attend balls. He was instantly attracted to Lady Petra but could never imagine that the prim and proper lady would ever want anything to do with him.
Brendan is wary of love after watching his mother grieve for so long at the death of his father. He is terrified of strong emotions and the bond he feels with Petra. When he is forced to offer his hospitality after she and her mother face difficulties on their journey, can he avoid temptation and protect his heart?
I loved this story. The love story between Petra and Brendan was told so well. Their interactions and the way Petra slowly came out of her shell and started to think about her own desires and wishes were very natural. Her rebellion was slow to boil but when she rebelled she did so with a bang!
Brendan in turn had so many layers. I loved the fact that in the end he recognised that any decisions Petra makes has to be her own. She has had so little choice in her life, it had to be her choice which direction her life takes. And the sacrifice he made to give her that choice was truly poignant and to my mind heroic. Brendan is gruff and rough around the edges but truly wonderful.
Add to the mix a house party, Petra’s horrible suitor and equally awful family, the complication of Petra’s imminent betrothal, the machinations of Petra’s mother, the mystery behind Brendan’s father’s disappearance and one Lady Cupps Foster and the story is set for plenty of drama to keep the reader entertained.
I definitely recommend this book to everyone. It truly can be read as a stand alone because although the previous protagonists are mentioned, they do not appear in this story. If you haven’t read the previous books, I’d highly recommend you go and catch up.
Hoping we get a proper glimpse in the next one!

The development and interest in main characters, H/H well paired but i really didn’t move along with them as a pair. Secondary characters were enjoyable. It kept me wanting to know and read more.
humorous moments. The give and take dialogue was ok as well as action filled.
I loved the writing around the women empowerment (it wasn’t over the top for me). Badass women rock...it was slow burning but it was there.
Movement of the book flowed for the most part. Book writing/conversation were aright...found myself skimming pages. Not a lot of historical accuracy (no big deal to me), not a lot of internal character dialogue and not a lot of descriptive scenery written out.
Romantic /sexual content (kissing, oral and love making scenes) was throughout the book. Nothing over the top and was intertwined rightly in the story telling. 1.5/5 rating hotness and steam.
I love series around family members or a group of friends. I love the series even more when the author intertwines those characters throughout the book series (it’s a pet peeve when authors don’t do that because what’s the point of the series and introducing the characters if they are not going to interact throughout the series).

Tall, Dark & Wicked is the fifth book in The Wickeds series. This has been such a great series and this book doesn’t disappoint at all. It had great characters, a fun plot, a murder mystery, witty banter, and was definitely a “can’t put down” book.
We were introduced to Lady Petra in the previous book where her brother, Rowan, meet his match. She seemed meek and a follower of her mother, Lady Marsh wishes, but underneath she is simmering with rebellion. She insists on visiting Simon’s, Lord Pendleton, home and meeting his family before agreeing to the betrothal agreement.

Brendan was not looking for love, after seeing his mother grieve for his father, he decided he didn’t want to ever fall in love and hurt like that. When he finds Petra and Lady Marsh near his estate with a broken coach axle and Petra sick, all he can do is invite them to stay at his estate.

MYSTERY, PRE-ENGAGEMENT TIMES, TRUE LOVE
5 STARS for Book 5 of this emotional thoughtful tale of two seemingly different people who actually meet & call for each other in Book 4. What a treat watching how one who has always said he doesn't believe in love fall so deeply, as a mystery as old as he is in years is discovered. Furthermore, the treats just keep coming with our very proper young Lady of the Ton, who just decided she is tired of being considered dumb, and only considered marriage material because she is dull, weak, & bidable. Don't wait, each of these Books in this Series can be read as a Standalone, but they each are such different women & men delightfully I have had a hard time sleeping & just getting anything done inbetween these Books, on to Book 6. Recommend.

The end felt a bit too abrupt. Considering we went into his mum’s head you’d think we’d get to see the scene of him delivering the new to his mum. Maybe I just enjoy the sad scenes but I would’ve loved that scene between mother and son where we get to see them discuss him overcoming his fear of loving others. Further him asking if it’s alright that he’s chosen to forsake retribution so he can have his love without scandal. Would’ve been nice, but I understand maybe not to the cup of tea of others, so maybe that was it’s exclusion.
Also the feelings of love were a bit odd since the only nice moment they had with each other was in the tree. I guess they found the antagonism to their liking and that spurned them on but I would’ve preferred one other scene (before the cave) where they had a nice interaction.

I cried... again
I haven't cried over a book for so long, it was difficult to hold it all in... I had to literally step away to calm myself before finishing the book.
Petra was golden. She had such a compelling character arc, going from a fake perfect Petra to a free and strong woman. Her story screamed Rose from Titanic, and I celebrated the survival of both main characters this time.
Now, Brendan was also a dime. Just when I was about to pull the hair out of my scalp in frustration, he goes and outdoes all the other heroes on my list. Such a badass, incorrigible, and loveable gentleman.
Finally, the entire story was simple beautiful. Others may disagree with me, but I felt that it was the perfect decision to focus on the love instead of the dramatics ;).

I was so excited for this book to come out and it did not disappoint. I had read Kathleen’s first 2 in this series back in 2014 and 2016 but then I found her again this past year and read book 3 and 4 and now this last one. She is such a good writer. I love how she has such depth and understanding of the characters not just for the main ones but others as well which makes for a more understanding story and how everyone interacts.
I read 370 books in 2019 and it’s all the same genre so stories really have to stand out for me to remember them as well as the author. This one I will remember. Keep up the great work.

A True Love Story
I like that the focus of the plot is truly the love story between the hero and heroine. It seems real at the same time has that touch of romantic fairy tale to it. The hero and heroine are likable. Their relationship as it unfolded exuded their depth and development. For once, I am happy to read about a hero who is not jumping from one woman to another. I enjoyed the humor in the story as well as the other characters. It was cleverly written. I enjoyed reading it.

Petra is every bit as dull as any character has ever presumed in the previous novels of this series. Much like the first book, Petra is so minuscule that were she to stand sideways, she could not be seen with the naked eye. The author describes Petra as being prepubescent and child-like in her appearance, which, for my sensibility, is extraordinarily disturbing considering this is a romance novel.

I've really enjoyed this series and this book is no exception. Historical romance isn't even my preferred genre, and I still liked it. Brendan is a bit of a pain, but he's still likeable, and I'm glad Petra wasn't quite as perfect and demure as she appeared to be in earlier books. It was a fun, pleasant read. I really hope there will be more.

This series is certainly becoming one of my favourites. I love that the characters are all interconnected but every story can be read as a standalone alone. I loved to watch Petra become more daring and sassy as the story went on! Loved it.. definitely recommend reading it

Best yet!
Loved Petra as she bracely struggles to finally break from her appalling passive aggressive mother, Lady Marsh. Brought up to be a perfect lady, Petra takes charge of her life.
The plot is excellent, original and exciting.
Ayers gets better with every book in this series. On to #5.

Perfect Petra meets her perfect mate
Love this authors books. Reading Petra's story I understood the forces that made her into a perfect lady. It only took a rugged broody gorgeous Brendan to find the cracks in her perfect veneer and reveal the passionate woman beneath. Scorching chemistry, great characters, beautiful love story. What more could you ask for.

I thought he hated Petra. I felt for her having a bully for a mother, that women ran rough shod over her family. As the story began to unfold it was clear Morwick had issues of his own. I nearly jumped for joy when Petra showed her true self and stood up to her mother. Go Petra!

Awesome
I loved this book, the witty repartee between the hero and heroine made me laugh out loud. I feel bad for the women of the regency era the way they were treated like cattle and children. Thank goodness we’ve come a long way! The Wickeds is a great series filled with strong female characters and hot and hunky males.

It was an entertaining and light read. Certainly, a very much a "Kathleen Ayer's book" (all the usual tropes or characters traits present). It had that special kind of hot edge all her stories have, and yet, this one felt somehow less exciting.
I think it's the lack of scenes between the main couple. Don't get me wrong, Morwick and Petra had chemistry (that one, lone sex scene proves that, ha...), but I'd love for them to spend more time together - maybe developing their relationship while discussing geology or simply walking in the moors.
The spark was there. but then vent in the story started to develop really quickly (the murder mystery was nice, tho) and the ending felt rushed.

Love comes different for everyone
Anytime I finish Kathleen's books I always come to the same conclusions I love the books and the characters so much it outweighs anything else. I'm so glad I don't let reviews stop me from reading books, I would have missed out on some great stories but Kathleen why didn't you destroy Simon lol. On to the next one :)

Better than the previous
. I have read all the Wickeds. Nice enjoyable, happy ending and all that. IMHO But this novel was better than the previous 2 novel. The setting is different and the core theme is well weaved.

Sweet!
What a sweet story. I loved the not so perfect hero in this story. The less than perfect, but absolutely charming way they got together and how it ended. Rather more realistic than most. I was perfectly charmed.

It was a DNF. I stopped at about 40%. Everyone was so unlikable. I couldn't root for the hero. He may have been alpha, but he was just an asshole. I loved Wicked Again, by this same author. I gave it 5 stars. This one did nothing for me.
