ECONOMICS WITH CALCULUS

This textbook provides a calculus-based introduction to economics. Students blessed with a working knowledge of the calculus will find that this text facilitates their study of the basic analytical framework of economics. The textbook examines a wide range of micro and macro topics, including prices and markets, equity versus efficiency, Rawls versus Bentham, accounting and the theory of the firm, optimal lot size and just in time, monopoly and competition, exchange rates and the balance of payments, inflation and unemployment, fiscal and monetary policy, IS-LM analysis, aggregate demand and supply, speculation and rational expectations, growth and development, exhaustible resources and over-fishing. While the content is similar to that of conventional introductory economics textbook, the assumption that the reader knows and enjoys the calculus distinguishes this book from the traditional text.

I love the fact that the maths is used in a very guided manner, often showing all the steps involved. Additionally, I appreciate the good use of graphs. I find it very useful and meaningful in showing certain mathematical relationships that also make good economic sense. The graphs are also accompanied by very detailed captions to explain to the reader what is drawn in the graphs. This does help to aid comprehension significantly. I highly recommend this book to students who have a basic understanding of non-mathematical economics, e.g. students who have sat for GCE 'A' Level H2 Economics, and who wish gain an even deeper understanding of the subject through the use of mathematical tools.

Overall, a good text for an intermediate understanding of the economy from a neoclassical perspective.

As the title suggests, a good understanding of calculus is absolutely necessary to reading this book. If you meet this requirement then you are in luck. Like most modern applications of mathematics, they are the application of calculus. Understanding this makes the task of understanding the application infinitely simplified. Lovell does not disappoint. He leans heavily upon the basic concepts of calculus to instruct upon economics making it almost too easy. This is the proper way to learn economics, or physics, or any other subject for that matter.
