Kit Melbourne #5?

Changer's Turf

Rate this book
"Werewolves," Laurel said. "Werewolves took my boys. Find them. Track them down." From Selkies in the Puget Sound to were-Javelinas in the high deserts of New Mexico, to were-cougars in Appalachia, Kit uses genealogy research of her husband's family to find out what's gone wrong with American werewolves, and why they have kidnapped her new cousin's children. For Kit, who has the child of a lycanthrope quickening in her womb, the quest is deeply personal. But she's not the only one who wants the boys. Tom, a private investigator who wants the kids for reasons of his own, has taken advantage of a deep betrayal to spy on all of Kit's plans. He trails her closer and closer with every step she takes and proves he's not above killing to get what he wants.

This is the fifth novel in the Kit Melbourne series, but you can probably follow along just fine even if you haven't read any of the others. Like the others, it has a smart, fearless protagonist, magic, vampires, and other low-level supernaturals mostly set in the mythical Pacific Northwest town of Seabingen. It diverges from the earlier books in the series in its scope. This book takes place in a variety of settings, including werewolf compounds, remote islands, and Renaissance festivals.

If it weren't for the supernatural elements, this novel would qualify as an action-thriller.
While not the gore-fest of other dark urban fantasies, this novel does have some scenes that squeamish readers might dislike. Werewolves kidnap children, and Kit and her antagonist Tom are willing to kill to get them back. The mood I was shooting for was that of the movie FARGO.

I recommend this for people who like novels about vampires and or werewolves. I also recommend it for people who like mysteries. I also recommend it for anyone who has enjoyed a novel depicting a steely-eyed ex-cop hero chasing down bad guys and not playing by the rules, but thought it would be even better if the hero were a pregnant woman with supernatural powers. So, basically, everyone.

I'm the author of this book, and I want you to enjoy it, so I am posting it chapter-by chapter on my website, which is my name dot com. Come on over and check it out.

The closest writer I know to Kater Cheek is Charlaine Harris, but, for my money Kater is much better. She creates a similar world, where the supernatural is real and getting a little press, albeit in the Pacific Northwest and sometimes Arizona. But for me it is a fuller world, one that feels more organic and "realer". This is the latest in the Kit Melbourne saga, and Kit is one of my favorite fictional characters. I'm much more at home with her than with Sookie Stackhouse, but if you're a Sookie Stackhouse fan and looking for more than Harris has provided, this would be a really good place to look.
This installment is about the hunt for two kidnapped were-bear boys. That's all you need to know to get you started. Go for it.
