Eat Like Jesus: Returning to Kosher Christianity

Rate this book
Eat Like Jesus" offers a simple, scientific, and comprehensive Bible-based dining theology, examining and explaining what the Bible teaches about food and eating. Drawing heavily from the Bible texts, "Eat Like Jesus" puts food-related topics such as veganism, kosher diets, cleansing rituals, and animal physiology (including diet, hygiene, diseases, etc.) into proper perspective, harmonizing New Testament accounts of Jesus, Peter, and Paul with Old Testament teachings of Moses. "Eat Like Jesus" uniquely reveals why the first law in the Garden of Eden was dietary, why Noah took extra pairs of certain animal species into the Ark, what kind of animals Peter saw in his vision, and what Jesus really meant as he "called all foods clean.

Well put

A solid biblical argument not just for a kosher diet, but also against dispensationalism. Shouldn't be read unless you are willing to set aside religious dogma for the truth of scripture.

While there are few things I would change and add, there are many great questions presented by Andrew Hoy in his book. The idea that we all started as vegans but then are allowed to eat anything we want just doesn't line up with either what the Bible actually says or with a loving Creator who does not change.

Personally, for me I've already come to this understanding of the truth of what's really going on with the hand washing and Peter's dream, so it was the end chapters I more interested in - about how we were never created to be vegans, rather we are allowed to eat the animals that eat the green herbs, NOT the animals that eat other animals and the evidence for that. I appreciate the charts Hoy uses to show how strong the dispensationalism is.

"Christians of all denominations have shared a common belief for centuries. For nearly two thousand years, they have placed their faith - and their eternal destiny - in Jesus' redemptive work. Rather than depending on their own imperfect effort for their eternal salvation, they rely on Jesus' perfect life. Because of this, Christians will zealously attest to Jesus' flawless compliance with all of Moses' law, accepting it as a prerequisite for their salvation.

Given Moses' mandates, it follows that Jesus' righteous status was indeed contingent on what he ate; in other words, Jesus would not have lived a perfect life if he ate things that God forbade through Moses. The Christian redemption mechanism collapses if Jesus did not keep all of Moses' law, for Christian theology insists that an imperfect sacrifice would fail to meet the Father's expectations. Therefore, Jesus was bound by the entire law or 'Torah' of Moses - including the 'kosher' food laws of Leviticus; Jesus couldn't eat roadkill, blood, or animals slaughtered by strangulation, nor could he eat things like shrimp, lobster, scallops or swine. Had Jesus eaten such 'foods,' he would have violated Moses' law, disqualifying himself and incurring guilt and sin. Jesus' failure to comply with Moses' food laws would disintegrate the basis for Christian claims or messianic perfection; it would negate his pedigree and render his crucifixion meaningless. For Jesus to be perfect in deed, he had to be perfect in feed." (excerpt Preface).

When you look at all the crazy fad diets on the market today, it's hard for anyone to gain a clear perspective on just what works. It seems like there is literally something for everyone and everyone has had different results. What I have discovered is that there is not one perfect thing that seems to work. When you look at how food ingredients have changed in addition to the chemicals used to treat our agricultural crops you often wonder if there isn't a link to our failing health and increases in diseases through the types of foods we eat.

Looking back to the Bible for answers for Christian is a way of life. I've often wondered if the key to healthier living isn't to be found along the lines of what Jesus ate during his time on Earth. Does this simple answer hold to key to everything that ails us including the rise of cancer types among people and the increase in obesity and diabetes in young people?

In the book Eat Like Jesus by Andrew L. Hoy, he takes an in-depth look at providing the answers to such questions like Did Jesus really declare all foods to be clean? Did God call Daniel to be a vegetarian? Did God expect Adam and Eve to eat only vegetables? Did Peter "get up, kill and eat" unclean animals after his vision? He researches those answers in the Bible and offers us a look at how what we eat is going against what the New Testament teaches that we can eat anything.

I received Eat Like Jesus compliments of West Bow Press and Andrew L. Hoy for my honest review and found myself definitely intrigued by not only my own personal thoughts on the issue of eating from the biblical principles to what I discovered through Andrew's research into the deeper meaning of the scriptures. I did not receive any monetary compensation for my honest review and the opinions expressed are strictly my own unless otherwise stated. I think everyone will truly gain some greater knowledge through this book and it is my hopes that you will find something that will lead to a healthier lifestyle. I personally rate this one a 4 out of 5 stars.

Where Adam and Eve vegans?
Was Noah encoraged to eat everything?
Did Jesus call all foods "Clean"?

Eat Like Jesus is a Bible based dining theology. In this book the author talks about clean and unclean food. Most of us believers don't realize we are eating contrary to God's advice.
In fact most of us have been misguided by most bible translations, that we can eat what we want.
In this book Mr. Hoy breaks down the misconceptions and shows us what God wants us to eat
that is life preserving.
God forbade the Israelites to eat these unclean things:
clams, crabs, mussels, oysters, scallops, lobsters, shrimp, squid, octopus, eels, sharks, catfish, camels, rodents, rabbits, horses, pigs, boars, bears, dogs, cats, frogs, reptiles, worms, beetles, flies, or scavenging birds of prey. God knew these animals where unclean because they hosted a variety of harmful parasites, bacteria, biotoxins, carcinogens, and viruses.
Scientist today might refer these as "Biohazards".
It is for this reason that the "Unclean" animal varieties, consisting of scavengers, carnivores, and omnivores, are not qualified as "Food" for people according to bible texts.
In this book Mr. Hoy also talks about how Moses' Law commanded that animal meat be a part of the priests' diet. So, according to Moses' writings vegans or vegetarians might be described as people whose "Faith is weak" if their diets are based on moral convictions.

I found this book very eye opening on so many levels. Mr. Hoy gets to the bottom of issues in the bible and breaks them down. Please pick this book up and read it for yourself if you are interested to learn more about how to "Eat Like Jesus".

** Andrew Hoy worked as a professional engineer for 15 years. Searching for greater meaning, he embarked on African missionary work, where he began questioning traditional church doctrines.
Only after moving to Israel to study the Scriptures did he find answers, along with a passion for discipleship and an authentic understanding of the Great Commission.

"Come now, let us reason together..." Isaiah 1:18

** I received this book from Mr. Hoy himself to review and give my honest opinion.
If you have an issue with my review, I did not write this book and I am undecided on some of the topics. These are not my statements in the book, this review is simply my opinion. **

This is a remarkable book, where the author did an incredible work of exegesis to give us a completely new perspective on the message God gave Adam in the Gardens of Eden, and later to Noah after the Great Flood, as He gave His blessing to them to multiply and reign over all his creation, including what they should eat. Being a theologian, I personally know the difficulties of studying the original text in Hebrew of the Old Testament texts and figure out the correct interpretation of what was written. Kudos to Mr. Andrew Hoy! There is a lot of research and study involved in the production of this book. His analyses provides clear explanation on kosher diets and much more. I highly recommend this book to any reader that is interested on a good research done by the author and wants to increase his/her understanding on a completely new perspective provided on food-related topics on the Scriptures.
I received this book from the author for reviewing and I was not requested to provide a positive review. Opinions expressed here are my own.
