Life has been steady--if a bit boring--for Kandice Kayne, but she's used to it being like that. Her life consists of work and sleep and study. Not necessarily in that order.
Everything changes when she is awakened after the graveyard shift by the police--who insist she's a material witness to a murder.
Kandi is pulled from everything and everyone she knows and thrust into the world of Monster Witness Protection. What's a good witch psychologist to do?
And, on top of everything else, she's falling in love with a dream man!
I enjoyed this book and think it is going to be a great series. I love Kandi and loves how the author has created the many different characters in this book. It has a great story with paranormal and some mystery. I loved the twist and turns that this book has and was surprised with the ending. I can't wait to read the next book in this series.
A Review copy was provided to me in exchange for a fair and honest review. The free book held no determination on my personal review.
A great read. An intricate plot of a dysfunctional family, a power grab and murder. Our heroine left her family home after her mother tried to take over her inheritance (from her father) by claiming she had a mental illness. Now she's working the graveyard shift at the processing monsters. A banging wakes her up from sleep, she's placed in Witness Protection (her landlady had been killed and it's feared that the Goblin Mob did the hit). A new identity, a new job, dreams that are too real, a promise from the Mob the keep an eye on her and her Mother tracking her down. Why does everyone want her and her power? What exactly happened to her landlady and her father? Can she get out of this crazy situation? Nice paced read with great imagery plus characters that you can visualise in your minds eye.
Creative and interesting concept - something I love! I wish there were more books in the series...I'd like to explore some of the ideas and mysteries further. Thank you Ms Reeves for the fun and entertainment!
I liked this take on urban fantasy set in the future. The main character is interesting, but the ending was a little abrupt. Curious how the rest of the series plays out.
This series must be read in order. This is the first book.
This was an awesome start to a great new series! The world was engrossing and imaginative. Imagine an alternate Earth where some kid had world jumped and brought back magic... The possibilities are endless. The timeline is set in the future compared to us as it is somewhere in the 2040s thereabouts long after some great Magic War.
Kandi goes about her business... finishing school to be a shrink... working in a monster prison... studying... sleeping... and eating (not necessarily in that order). For fun (I guess) she also hangs out with her dead neighbor Atticus' ghost and his alive gorgon wife (who she never learned a name for) Mrs. Atticus. Kandi agrees to go upstairs for Turkish coffee and life as she knows it is over for her.
This book is a mystery wrapped in a conundrum. There is an impossible romance. An unwitnessed murder with far reaching consequences. A blurry past that can not be remembered. More villains than can be counted and unlikely allies indistinguishable from said enemies. The only constant is the comedic bent that colors all the happenings whether suspenseful or frightening.
I would suggest this book to anyone who enjoys paranormal or fantasy genres as long as they like comedic overshadowing. It defies being categorized (at least in my opinion) in any set genre. I truly enjoyed it though and can not wait for the next installment to be released! We need more mold breaking unique serieses like this :)
My favorite part of this book was her outlook and attitude over the cats. I liked the story, but was frustrated at the ending. I felt like I was just starting to get a feel for this strange version of the future when it ended on a flat note. I liked it enough to want to give any sequels a try, but I'm not eager about it. By the end I was more invested in Roger than any of the other unanswered questions.
Oh and she didn't even want a pet...getting saddled the way she did wasn't a warm and fuzzy moment.
I liked this story. It was different than others I have read. Some times it's a relief to read some thing else of the PN world. It's paranormal and some mystery/suspense. I liked the magical world set up. The character's were great too, the goblins were my favorite. I think with some editing, grammar and, punctuation revisions the book would have been even better. I was a bit lost in the beginning, once I caught up the story was almost over. Then I wanted the next book! Sadly there isn't one that I found.
I really wish the next one was out! I love the interestingly refreshing different story line and cannot wait to continue the story in the next book in the series.
I loved this story. The characters are great and there's even a few twists and turns. My only complaint is there is no follow up book. I love a good series and this one is leaving me hanging....
