About the author

Sujatha was the allonym of the Tamil author S. Rangarajan, Author of over 100 novels, 250 short stories, ten books on science, ten stage plays, and a slim volume of poems. He was one of the most popular authors in Tamil literature, and a regular contributor to topical columns in Tamil periodicals such as Ananda Vikatan, Kumudam and Kalki. He had a wide readership, and served for a brief period as the editor of Kumudam, and has also written screenplays and dialogues for several Tamil movies.

As an engineer, he supervised the design and production of the electronic voting machine (EVM) during his tenure at Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL), a machine which is currently used in elections throughout India. As an author he inspired many authors, including Balakumaran, Madhan.

Read around 10 random stories from this collection for now. More emotional than vignana sirukathaigal however the twists were more predictable in some stories. More about the journey of the characters in few pages rather than some huge innovation. Still loved it :D
the 10 stories I read were :
1) mudhal manaivi - Reminded me of some very real life couples. Very relatable and nice punch in the end.

2) Vellai kappal - About a pretty younger sister and involves questions of adultery? Ending didn't work for me. Weakest story of his so far.

3) Thedal - The NRI character is so well written I wanted to punch him lol

4)Sevagi - One of the best for me. Captured the family planning milieu and proved to be king of ironies even if cliched.

5) Natpu - Title gives away crux. But i think he wanted the reader to know it before the character so that we feel a variety of negative emotions.

6) Oru latcha puthaganagal - Slowly drew me in and ended beautifully. Deals with a very poignant issue pretty boldly. Hats off!

7) Narmada - A rather strange twist lights up this rather run of a mill story.

8 ) Eendru Purantharuthal - My personal favourite! <3 About modern mother son realtionships and a sibling story too..

9) India enadhu India - A very powerful story mirroring a rather true image of India.

10) Virpanai - Why arranged marriages aren't trustworthy lol

இருநூற்றுக்கும் மேலாக சிறுகதைகள் எழுதியுள்ள சுஜாதாவின் அறுபது சிறுகதைகளைக் கொண்ட இரண்டாம் தொகுதி இந்தப் புத்தகம். முதல் தொகுதி யில் உள்ளது போலவே இதிலும் படிப்பவரின் கவனத்தை முழுமையாக ஈர்த்து, சிந்திக்க வைக்கும் வகையில் பல சிறுகதைகள் உள்ளன. இரண்டாம் தொகுதியில் சிறப்பானவை என்று பின் பக்க அட்டையில் பாலம், குதிரை, ஒரு இலட்சம் புத்தகங்கள், இரு கடிதங்கள், தனிமை கொண்டு என்ற ஐந்து கதைகளும் குறிப்பிடப்பட்டுள்ளன. அதற்கு பதில் பேச்சில்லை. ஹாஸ்யம் சுஜாதாவின் வழக்கமான எழுத்து நடை அல்ல. இருப்பினும் குதிரை சிறுகதையைப் படிக்கும் சமயம் நீங்கள் விழுந்து விழுந்து சிரிப்பது நிச்சயம். இவற்றுடன் சிகப்பு மாருதி, அப்பாவின் ஆஸ்டின் இரண்டும் சிறப்பான கதைகள் என்று அவசியம் குறிப்பிடத்தக்கவை.

Sujatha has a unique style — he doesn’t just write stories, he pulls you into an entirely new world. While reading, you can literally visualize everything like a movie playing in your mind.

The biggest challenge with this kind of storytelling is believability, and Sujatha nails it every time. His writing feels natural, realistic, and relatable without trying too hard.

No other author I’ve read so far creates this kind of gripping impact in short stories.

That said, a few stories had endings I personally didn’t like — either too abrupt or sad — which is the only reason I’m giving 4 stars instead of 5.

But overall, it’s a brilliant collection. If you’re into short stories that feel like cinema and make you think, this one’s a must-read.

I fondly remember the day my dad bought this book from a lending library. We shifted and the book accidentally stayed with us. This book has the ability to pull out a story for every mood. You can read it in any order, pull a random chapter, they will make sense. I have read deep, efficacious stories and fun, light hearted stories, and some pretty good science fiction works (you know, its Sujatha after all right?) All from the same book. Must read.
