April 2, 2026A solid anthology, but as older sci fi goes, suffering from getting a bit dated. Example: story by Robert Silverberg proposing that urban areas became all black and solidly run by blacks, with tall marble banks and gorgeous mosques, but closed off from the all-white suburbs. Several others dealt with same issues, the 60's and 70's (when these stories came out) were troubled by race riots.
An innovative one, Total Environment by Brian Aldiss, dealt with human experimentation with overcrowding and unleashing new powers of the human mind under stress.
And a classic "The Vanishing American" by the superb and sadly short-lived author Charles Beaumont, which could have been set in any time but seems to be more past than futuristic.
Themes of overpopulation, pollution and racial strife are the main threads.

Despite being a little off on what 2000 may hold, we worth reading. I picked it up sight unseen and it sucked me right in.
