This is a picture book. The short blurbs underneath the design examples describe little of the influences on the final design and the motivation behind the design choices, which would have been interesting. That said, it is probably not always transparently communicated how the designs came to be.

In many cases, the designs itself do not look dated, even though the book is almost 20 years old. I am not sure how the generous use of plastic would hold up today though.

All in all, the book serves as a collection of possible packaging design inspirations and can help open one‘s mind to what is possible. The learnings stop there, however.

Some of the examples mentioned in the book are really creative, which I enjoyed. However, this does not apply to all items, and one would have not missed out on anything had the author omitted some of the various double-sided books.

RotoVision has come out with some really nice design offerings lately, and this one is no exception.

Includes a diverse range of work represented, and a subtle key points out the special features of each--such as binding, die-cuts, inks, etc.

Good design inspiration throughout, and the pieces definitely transcend mere package design.
