In The Oil Painting Course You've Always Wanted , author Kathleen Staiger presents crystal clear, step-by-step lessons that build to reinforce learning. Brush control, creating the illusion of three dimensions, foolproof color mixing, still-life painting, landscapes, and portraits--every topic is covered in clear text, diagrams, illustrations, exercises, and demonstrations. Staiger has taught oil painting for more than thirty-five years; many of her students are now exhibiting and selling their paintings. Everyone from beginning hobby painters, to art students, to BFA graduates has questions about oil painting. Here at last are the answers!
This is a great book for beginning oil painting. It would actually be good for even someone who has had classes, but just wants a different artist's take on how they do things. I really appreciated Staiger's color theory. She covered it much better than a class I physically went to. She also covers the basics well. But there really isn't any replacement for taking a class from an artist and having them work with you and give you critics and suggestions, and to be able to ask to ask them questions.
A good example of the fact that just anyone seems to be able to get published these days. One thing I'll give this book is the progress shots of painting exercises. Otherwise, it's mediocre at best. There are far better oil painting instruction books out there.
Never seen so much writing in an art how-to book. A lot of information provided with very little amount of step by step tutorials. I will need another oil painting book. Not for me.
