Young Jeff Cameron was not looking for trouble when he rode into Taos, New Mexico, that cold November morning in 1882. What he wanted was a hot meal, and then a hot bath. And eventually, when he found the right place, a piece of land to raise Spanish-blooded horses. What that early Taos morning brought him, instead, was a violent confrontation with a vaquero by the name of ...more

A grulla, a crane-coloured mare of Spanish descent, is at the centre of the beautiful, carefully crafted tale. Some elements of this Western historical adventure remind me of Max Brand (for a strong and gallant young hero, and girl who can ride and shoot) while the epic journey and search for a safe home remind me of The Outlaw Josey Wales.

I am a horse lover and several horse and mule characters play a great part in the story. The people too are individuals and we see our central hero growing t

This western novel takes the classic 1880s story set-up -- a lone cowboy who rides into town and finds trouble -- and subverts the genre in different ways.

When we first meet 30-year-old Jeff Cameron, the protagonist and hero of "La Grulla," he is beating a stranger unconscious after witnessing the man lash his horse with a rawhide quirt. It's a violent beginning, and the violence increases after the reader learns Jeff has ridden into this small New Mexico town because he's on the run from the la

Loved the horse knowledge in the book... so many books that have horses in them don't get the details right and leave a knowledgeable horse-person wanting to claw our their eyeballs! This book was so well written... as a horse-person, I love the memorable horses in the book. I wasn't sure if I'd enjoy the book, because I'm not typically a "western" reader. At times, I felt the book seemed a touch drawn out, but I think it is mainly because I had to read it in a lot of small chunks. By the end, I ...more

Many well-written reviews for this book! Mr. Wright has attracted some very knowledgeable and sophisticated readers -- and rightly so. This read was grand on so many levels, it's hard to know where to begin. The writing was captivating and the story and background engrossing. The main and sub characters were extremely well-developed, believable, colorful and fascinating. The story and characters held true to the Old West, it's culture, language, and flavor. The author takes time to embrace the g ...more

Excellent narrative, a bit reminiscent of my favorite Western writer Zane Grey and his superb horse narratives, like Wildfire, etc. The characters were similar types as well, but stronger even. Love the competent, capable, and confident Maggie.
