The Holloway family recently moved from their Los Angeles home to a decaying Victorian mansion. As they begin to settle into the strange manor, their beliefs become challenged by unearthly events. Strange whispers echo throughout the house. Unseen forces hold them in place and decrepit hands reach for them from the dark corners of the chilling house. As the Holloway family ...more

What starts out as a pretty normal story quickly goes to very strange and the end was just ... just ... I don't even know how to describe it.

Ethan and his parents move to a new house and no one, except for the father, seems very happy about it. The parents are fighting and they don't even seem to see Ethan. They've not a very happy existence lately - a tragic event has torn them all apart - and as the house shows more and more signs of being haunted, that tragic event resurfaces in a different

A quick, intense read. I definitely appreciated the way the story builds to a frightening climax. The horror elements are done well, like shadows lurking around the corner just out of sight until they're suddenly in your face. Part of me really likes how vague and unexplained the terrifying elements were, although by the end I was hoping to understand SOMETHING about this house, the supernatural root of it all (literally in the the roots of the house), and why exactly this family went through ...more

I enjoyed the story in The Monsters Within. It's a short book, and is relatively fast-paced. It begins with the Holloway family, Travis, Katerine, and Ethan, their grown son, moving to a Victorian-style mansion in a neighborhood of newer homes. They have moved from their home in Los Angeles to try to start fresh. It seems that Katherine believes that Travis had an affair with one of his university students, even though he solidly swears that nothing happened.

Even before they get fully moved into

I had such high hopes for this based on the blurb but I was very disappointed.

This was probably the poorest editing and writing that I have ever encountered. There were literally glaring errors on every single page - it seemed like the author put the story down and then never went back to read through it or edit it at all after that. What is being advertised as a finished product reads more like a very rough first draft.

There were errors in tense often within the same sentence or paragraph,

Im studying authors and enjoy mingling with up & coming ones like Corvus Winchester. Horror isnt my forté, traditionally sticking an audience with a bleak ending, like science fiction. However a proper reviewer judges a book by its own variety of factors. The telling of this one is unique.

The Monsters Within, 2013, delivers the message that evil preys on discord and anger. We witness rare instances of relief, in which light is the antidote to darkness. Oddly, tender moments of repair between

The Monsters Within is a short novella that delves into the troubles plaguing a seemingly broken family. The reader is plunged directly into the conflict, with one member of the family ready to move on while the rest seem to be hanging onto their own personal struggles.

While the causes of each person's grief varied, it becomes clear that each are being consumed by their own troubles. The darkness in each

Travis, Katherine and their son, Ethan, have moved very far away from their Los Angeles home because of a very sad incident. Travis was really the only one who wanted to move but the rest of the family went along with his plans. The reason for their move left Travis and Katherine fighting constantly, making life very uncomfortable for Ethan. They bought an old Victorian house which still had a lot of the items from past owners. As soon as they move into their new home, strange things start ...more

THE MONSTER'S WITHIN By Corvus Winchester was provided to me by the author for free in eBook format in exchange for a fair and honest review.

As the story begins the reader instantly knows that the Holloway family is dysfunctional. They have moved 16 hours away from their previous home for a new start. They have purchased an old Victorian style house that is still filled with the possessions of the previous owners. When they ask what happened to them, they are told that they disappeared. This is

I loved this unique story. The premise seems a bit broad, but once I began reading, I couldn't put the book down. Corvus really makes you care about the characters and want to see them through on their journey. There are several truly creepy and terrifying moments throughout the story. Definitely a story to read with the lights out at night. A few of the plot twists did surprise me, but the ending took me completely off-guard. The book is centered on redemption and creates a clever narrative ...more

Wow. From the book's description I was expecting so much more. Some key elements to the story seem to be rather blatantly copied and/or slightly adapted from the first season of the TV show American Horror Story. Other elements to the story never fell into place. I had to force myself to finish. Utterly disappointing :(

Too confusing, did not see signs of the family having any sort of beliefs to be challenged against. Did not see what the secret the mansion held to their past. Maybe I just didn't get it.

My name is Corvus Winchester and I recently published my first official work - The Monsters Within. This novella is available in both kindle and paperback edition on Amazon.
I have been writing for what seems like most of my life. I love to tell stories and entertain people with descriptive tales containing fully realized characters and twist endings. I primarily write horror and Christian stories,
