A finely written book that describes the works of Johannes Vermeer perfectly, but also the history that lead to modern painting. We get a look at each of Vermeer's paintings, and each page gives a detailed about the symbolism, the creation and its life history. Not only that, but the scans of the artworks are in clear cut quality that you can see even the small specks vividly. Surprising given that this little book was published back in the mid-2000s, but clearly the creators put a lot of efforts to making a tribute to Vermeer. Obviously, there's not much known about Vermeer's personal life, so the biographical section is left to only a handful of pages, but that can be looked over for most Vermeer fans.

The back pages include a timeline from the artist's birth to his death year, but also includes other important historical events that occurred during his lifetime. There is also a catalogue page to show the countries and museums of where each of his artworks are now held at. While it is not fully detailed, this is an excellent book for anyone who wants to get a look behind the artist himself.

Invenzione della pittura d'oggi
In Vermeer le figure non hanno né pretendono di avere maestà. Sono persone che per abitudine non escono da quei limiti prefissi a un vivere di medio ceto, e, tutt'al più, potrebbero arrivare a eleggersi quei limiti ambiti da chi sia molto semplice in tutto, e lo sia quindi anche nel sentire e nell'immaginare. Ciò non toglie nulla alla profondità, può dare anzi all'espressione una giusta profondità, la giusta misura della profondità, quella misura che è indispensabile aiuto nel raggiungimento di un vero che non superi le misure della persona umana, che anzi si trovi, nei limiti stessi della persona umana, presente, ad affermare la indeterminatezza della poesia persuadendola ad emergere.

Nella piccola tela, una delle più note di Vermeer, si vede una fanciulla intenta a ricamare: il suo sguardo è concentrato sul lavoro e sul movimento delle mani. L'ambientazione è ridotta al minimo, poiché la visione dell'artista è molto ravvicinata e il taglio della composizione è condotto in maniera informale. In primo piano si trova lo spigolo di un tavolo, su cui è appoggiato un cuscino da ricamo: dal contenitore semiaperto escono dei fili rossi e bianchi, che l'artista ha delineato con pennellate semplici e di straordinaria fluidità. La luce arriva da destra e accende il giallo del corpetto, posandosi con particolare enfasi sulla fronte e sulle dita della ragazza: questo espediente permette a Vermeer di sottolineare la concentrazione della donna sul lavoro manuale. La figura della ricamatrice, del resto, ricorre nella pittura olandese come simbolo di laboriosità e di virtù domestica: l'interpretazione moraleggiante è confermata qui dalla presenza sul tavolino di un libro rilegato in pergamena e chiuso da nastri scuri, probabilmente una bibbia o un libro di preghiere. Uno dei più grandi pittori di sempre. Vedere le opere una vicina all'altra mi ha colpita perché, pur avendo quasi sempre gli stessi "oggetti di scena" (la cappa gialla bordata di ermellino, la mappa geografica, la sedia con le teste di leone etc), riesce sempre a dare un'aria diversa a ciascuna delle sue creazioni. Il preferito però resta sempre La lattaia

The depth of feeling in these paintings is incredible. Whereas Hopper feels voyeuristic, Vermeer makes you feel like you’re being let in on a secret.
