BLOODFLOW by Kevin Paul Tracy

I received a paperback copy of this book through the Goodreads Giveaway program. www.goodreads.com/giveaway

This is A Kathryn Desmarais Gothic Mystery.

Kate is an Investigator for the prestigious private investigation firm of Triple-I. She lives and works in New York City.

When her cranky boss gives her an assignment to help locate and purchase an antique coffin from a man named Mr. Darkthorne, she assumes the job will be quick and boring.

However, that turns out to be very wrong.

Kate breaks into Darkrhorne's penthouse apartment and is unable to find the coffin. But what she does find is both mysterious and alarming.

Somehow Kate has become involved in a centuries old war between a vampire and the man who seeks to destroy him at any cost.

It is dangerous game the two men are playing and Kate becomes collateral damage.

Will she fight on the side of righteousness or will she be seduced into becoming the dark vampire's queen and lover?

This story is well written and moves along quickly.

While there are a multitude of vampire novels on the market, this one actually offers a fresh take on the subject.

Kate is a flawed and fierce character who readers will love. The hapless Mikhail will remind readers of their first puppy-type love and Sam comes across as the man every woman dreams pf finding.

This book does a terrific job of blending the gothic with the modern. The battle scene is well written and I loved the way the author chose to conclude the story.

I am sure there will be more Kathryn Desmarais Gothic mysteries coming soon and I will definitely be reading them as they are released.

There were a few typos in the finished novel such as calling Mr. Darkthorne, "Mr. Darthorne" but other than that I thoroughly enjoyed this novel.

I rate it as 4.5 out of 5 stars.

Vampires and more

A great story and terrific writing. Captivating from the opening lines you follow Kate learning to care about her and yet at times you want to yell at her. Amazing and totally believable characters that leave you one moment liking them and the next wondering why you liked them. Kate as a heroine is interesting as she grows throughout the story. Well worth the time spent reading this and can't wait to read the next one to see what Kate will be up to next.

Unfortunately I don't get the chance to read as much as I'd like to, but once I started I couldn't put this book down. The characters as well as each setting were described in a way that captures one's imagination and the plot twisted and turned keeping me on the edge of my seat most of the time as the story unfolded. Can't wait to see what happens in the next book, Bloodtrail! :)

Bloodflow is a true page-turner led by the strong and intelligent Kathryn Desmarais. As a private investigator, she is used to risky situations, and sneaking around someone's home isn't all that unusual for her. However, Darkthorne's home contains a room filled with insects and dead rats, one with a human bite taken from it. Darkthorne comes home while Kathryn is still inside, but rather than sneak out at the earliest opportunity like any normal person would, instead Kate decides to follow him deeper into the horrifying penthouse. It was at this moment that I knew I was following an engaging and worthy hero who at once had my complete admiration, and had me asking her out loud to please desist!

Tracy's writing is vivid, clear, confident, and always fast paced. He does justice to the vampire tradition while still infusing his own style. This story is full of strong, rounded characters, driving tension, and moral complications. I highly recommend this fantastic read.

I won this book in a Goodreads giveaway in exchange for an honest review. I gave it 3 1/2 stars. It was a well written story, I just am not that into vampire stories. Kathryn Desmarais is a private investigator who was asked to locate an ancient casket for a client but she ends up finding much more. The owner of the casket is a centuries old vampire, who turns Kathryn into one of them, (for that she can't forgive him.) Although very angry and depressed by this, she stays with him long enough to learn many of the things needed to be a 'successful' vampire, but some of what she learns causes her to leave him and go to the other side, her client plus an ancient priest who has been trying to kill the vampire for centuries. The book describes Kathryn's journey in becoming a vampire and the ensuing battle between two old foes.

A quick read. Not a bad book but I found I was able to predict the plot and storyline before reading it. Not something that would normally hold my attention for a full read but since I won the book I wanted to finish it and give it a chance. Well written but not a book I would buy for myself.
