Handbook of Forensic Mental Health (edited by Keith Soothill, Paul Rogers and Mairead Dolan) has been a tremendous help during my university course in Criminology. It provides a great overview of the current legislation, systems, services and critical points. In addition, the book is rich in critique and further references. The writing style varies across the hadnbook (due to the variety of authors), but it is usually understandable.
