Breaking the Rules #3

Don't Make Promises

Rate this book
Savannah

The last place I ever expected to find myself was living with my brother's best friend. And his girlfriend.

But when I catch my boyfriend cheating on me, and check myself into a rundown hotel, Noah Parker turns up and practically moves me into his fancy apartment.

Oh, and did I mention the small, insignificant fact that I've been in love with Noah since I was fourteen? Yeah, nothing could possibly go wrong...

Noah

I swear Savannah O’Riley will be the death of me.

Call it duty, honor, or just blind loyalty, but when my best friend calls in the middle of the night saying his sister's in trouble, I can’t not agree to take her in. I’ll never be her knight in shining armor, but I would do anything to protect her.

But living with a girl—no, woman—who's haunted my dreams for longer than I can remember is a torture I don't think any man can endure for long.

That one promise I made—to not touch Savannah—all those years ago now feels like the hardest one to keep…

KA James is an author of contemporary romance. She lives in London, UK with her partner and their Bichon Frisé, called Mia. KA is an avid reader of romance books and truly believes the spicier the book, the better.

Don’t Tell Anyone is KA’s debut novel and came to life because KA felt that she had read nearly all the office romance/pregnancy books (her favourite genres, alongside dark romance) that were currently in the market. KA fell in love with the characters in the book and decided to create the Breaking the Rules series.

KA works in HR by day and is a romance author by night...quite literally! KA does not have a background in writing but has always loved to put the stories in her head down on paper, although they have never been more than a chapter or two and not within the romance genre.

Don't make any Promises, book 3 from Breaking the Rules series by KA James

In Don't Fall in Love, we saw glimpses of Savannah and Noah, and this book is their story.

Noah is Jack's best friend, who, of course, is Savannahs Brother. (Why do brothers have such good-looking friends)

Savannah fell hard and fast, and we see this and how she's affected by decisions Noah makes.

Noah wants what he thinks he can't have, and this means he denies himself of a lot.

Savannah pushes Noah buttons until he snaps and when he snaps...

Their chemistry was so palpable on the pages and the support he showed her, firstly in her time of need and then later on is beautiful. The emotions in the book can be felt throughout.

This was an amazing read, I didn't want it to end. I needed more of them.

If you're looking for a brothers best friend, forced proximity romance, this is one I suggest you pick up.

Whilst each book in the series is a standalone they are part of an interconnected series, which I highly recommend.

I adore KA James and her writing and world. And Savannah and Noah made me so happy 🥹

This story follows Savannah and Noah, who have known each other for a long time. Noah is her brother's best friend, and he has been holding a serious candle for her since he first saw her. Same for her, though 🤫.

When Savannah walks in on her boyfriend having sex with her former roommate, she ends up out on her own, reaching out to her big brother for help. Big brother, in turn, sends Noah 😏 and it just gets better and better from there.

❤️Brother's Best Friend
❤️Dual POV
❤️Forced Proximity
❤️Second Chance Romance
❤️Billionaire romance

Definitely pick up this book! I've been fortunate to read KA James before and so lucky to have received this wonderful ARC in exchange for an honest review.

“One last time, Savannah? I won’t lay a hand on you if you tell me this is the end. There is no ‘one last time’ with us. Tell me you understand that? This isn’t something I can walk away from. Fuck, I need you like I need air to breathe.”

This is one of many quotes I like from this book!

The tension between Noah and Savannah was there the whole time and I could feel it. Urgh.. I couldn’t put the book down and didn’t want to stop reading, but life happens. Loved the book from start to finish and the slow burn was killing me, but it was an amazing book.
Savannah is tough, funny and sassy girl. Love that Noah is protective and grumpy. Love the epilogue! I want to know more about Noah and Savannah. And want more of the cast of breaking the rules!
Will we get Jack and Suttons story? I hope so!

I haven’t met a KA James book I didn’t like. This one is no different.
I will say, the first book is still my favorite and this one was a bit of a slower pace and it took a while before I figured out where it was intertwined. The only thing I would have preferred was for the story to take off faster so we got more of them as a couple. Either way, I still recommend after reading the first 2 of this series.

So from the moment @kajamesauthor mentioned Noah and Sav's book ive been dying to read it. I knew the moment that i got the ARC copy i would drop everything and read for the day and i did exactly that!

I freaking loved it😍 from sav's sassy behaviour to Noahs tension and possesive behaviour with Sav.

I felt both Noahs and sav's pain at not being able to be together. I feel like i went through every emotion with them.

From my heart racing to my heart breaking and laughing and nearly crying i felt it all💕

I dont read many slow burns but this one was definitley worth it. The spice and the relationship was definitly worth the wait.

I found that the flashback chapters were just the right amount instead of being every other chapter. Kajames nailed it with just the right amount.😁

Noah made a promise to jack that he wouldnt hurt sav and that she was off limits (well so he thought) and he kept that promise even though it killed him to do it.

“Run. Because if I catch you, I’ll bend you over the first thing I can find and fuck you until you scream my name. If you get away, I’ll take it nice and slow. Maybe.”

This spicy part in the book just about killed me 🔥🤤
I mean come on where on earth are these guys in real like 🙈

I 100% recommend Dont Make Promises pick up a copy on November 28th 2023. You wont be dissapointed! 5⭐️

Sooo, what’s better than a brothers best friend &&& forced proximity, you ask…. Well I’ll tell you! BILLIONAIRE romance thrown in!!! I’m a sucker laterly for all the billionaire romance books you can throw my way.

This was exactly the book I needed in my life! It was written so well. The storyline was on point and I loved the development of the 2 mc’s!

This is the 3rd book in the series and I’m looking forward to more from this author.

Part 3 of the Don’t break the rules series, Savannah and Noah, who know each other since they were teenagers. Noah is bff with Sav’s brother and was struggling with the feeling of betraying him by getting involved with her.

We got glimpses of them in the previous book but their story turned to be a lot more interesting than I expected. The chemistry between them is the real deal here. It was so prominent and intense and the slow-burn was so enjoyable because they were both so in love but wouldn’t act on it. I liked how we were gradually learning about their history.

I wish the ending was slightly different, I wanted the last act to last just a little longer but I can’t say I didn’t enjoy the book’s pace or the MCs- I liked them both a lot.

I will definitely read the next book of the series.

4.5 🌟 Blown away by another read from KA James, I was lucky enough to get an ARC of this book and boy was I glad. Here’s what you’re in for…

✨ Brother’s Best Friend
✨ Billionaire Romance
✨ Dual POV
✨ HEA
✨ Forbidden love (Best friends sister)
✨ Forced proximity (Roommates)
✨ Interconnected standalone (highly recommend reading all the characters stories)
✨ Protective alpha
✨ Second chance (Childhood crush)
✨ Slow burn (But a super fast read)

Off limits, best friend’s little sister needs a place to stay? Need I say more?

I must have a thing for Noah’s because they all melt me!

I loved the flashbacks making their love for each other all the more special to read.

There are so many parts I loved that I don’t want to spoil. If you’re a fan of any of these tropes then I highly recommend this book!

I thoroughly enjoyed this contemporary series that just got better and better.

Lesson learned, don’t make promises!

“To all the girlies who’ve ever had a thing for their siblings' best friend…This one’s for you.”

I devoured this book in literally one sitting. I was so invested in this story from the very beginning. From Savannah’s sassy behavior to Noah's tension and possessive nature with Sav. From Sav’s heartache to Noah’s loyalty. I loved everything about this book, not one complaint.😍

Savannah went from an awkward teenager to a strong sassy woman. I just love her sass. She fell hard and fast, and we see this and how she's affected by decisions Noah makes. I could definitely feel her heartache and pain from those decisions.🥹

Noah is a very loyal friend and a protective grump. Looking into the glimpses of their past really allowed me to get to know them in a different way, it allowed me to see what events helped shape them into the people they are now. And oh Noah, my heart dang near broke. 🥹

This is a slow burn but the s*xual tension makes up for it. The tension throughout the book had me on the edge…. of my seat of course.🙈 The chemistry between Sav and Noah was palpable.🔥 The wait for the spice…. Ughhhhhh So Worth It! I will share one of my favorite quotes from Noah, it literally made me melt. 🫠🤤

“Run. Because if I catch you, I’ll bend you over the first thing I can find and fuck you until you scream my name. If you get away, I’ll take it nice and slow. Maybe.”🔥

This was my first time reading a K. A. James book, it won’t be the last time. Whilst each book in the series is a standalone they are part of an interconnected series, which I highly recommend. Don’t Make Promises is the third installment for The Breaking Rules Series. I will definitely be going back and reading the first two books and any books that come next. I'm especially hoping for Sutton and Jack’s story. The grace and class that Sutton showed in this book makes me want to see more of her and gives me high hopes for her story.

I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Right from Chapter 1, I knew I was going to like Savannah's character. She comes across as an independent, no-nonsense woman who takes no rubbish. The way she handled her 'boyfriend' was fantastic!
After this she finds herself in a predicament and needs somewhere to stay, she calls her brother, who, having moved to England, calls his best friend Noah to help Savannah out. This is the worst thing he could do because she's been in love with him since she was 14......
They obviously have some kind of past and it's hinted at through what's being said and chapters going back to the past.
Being his best friend's little sister, Noah knows he can't touch her Savannah thinks her love is unrequited.
I love the build-up in this story. The s3xu@l tension between them is palpable, you can cut it with a knife. Both Noah and Savannah are workaholics and they've been dancing around each other for a while. I've also enjoyed seeing the other characters here and there and figuring how they all fit together.
Writing flows really nicely and it's easy to read, it's the type of book that hooks you and you can't put it down, telling myself "just one more chapter", needing to know what happens, not wanting to miss when they FINALLY give in to what they're feeling!
I absolutely loved these two together, they complimented each other so well. I really admired Noah's loyalty to Jack, and I felt for him whilst he wrestled with his feelings. I also really loved his possessiveness and dirty mouth!
Savannah is one of my favourite FMCs. Her strength and independence was fantastic. Whilst she loved Noah, she wasn't going to let him keep them secret.
There's some they have to themselves to reflect on things and I really liked the way this was written. We got a chance to watch them come to the inevitable conclusion.
Things certainly changed when Jack came back!
I loved each of these stories but I think Noah and Savannah are my favourite so far!!
And the hints at Jack's story I'm hoping?! Cannot wait to read that!
For readers of Brothers Best friend and forced proximity, you have to read this one!!

~~~review~~~
dont make promises was a very long awaited book for me as we get to see glimpses of noah and savannah in alex and sebastian’s story. i was super excited to tear into it and it pulled me out of my three month reading slump.
to start, we get a nice breakup between savannah and the irrelevant boyfriend, which i LOVE. everytime a story starts with a breakup, i swear it always leaves the door open for the mmc to come curb stomp the ex. spoiler alert, noah curb stomps him 🤭
as the plot develops, we get to see glimpses of the relationship as they see one another in vulnerable moments. then after noah’s relationship skiddidle daddles out of the picture, we start to see the romance’s full potential.
the building of the romance was so push and pull i was beating my kindle up smacking to the next page, i devoured this story. absolutely love their story and will read again in the future.
the stuff that actually matters: i swear everytime i read smut, i get a solid 3 pages of the good stuff and then we move on. horrific i know. but KA James?? CHAPTERS. we got CHAPTERS of toe curling, eye watering, someone get me my rose, smut. i need these other authors to take notes. ✍🏼
my far and few complaints:
1. i am not a fan of mcs having an accent and it being written in the accent, as i read it comes out sarcastic in my head so it had me wincing a few times.
2. savannah is a cute little goody two shoes, love our queen, but the lack of cuss words had me like 🌚girl use your words
3. *****SPOILER***** the ending where we find out her brother never cared if they dated really dumped a bucket of water on the fire. noah was too dramatic for there to not be a good little argument or some kind of commotion.
overall would 10/10 recommend and read again. love this story 😙🤌🏼
DISCLAIMER: i was provided an arc copy but this is my honest opinion/review (:
📝My Review📝
Do you like a contemporary romance with some spice and a brother’s best friend? K.A. James third installment of the “Breaking the Rules Series” is the book for you!
“Don’t Make Promises” tells a story of a sister, Savannah, who happens to fall in love with her brother’s alpha, billionaire best friend, Noah. The back and forth from present to past keeps you informed, entertained, and at times a bit heartbroken. I immediately fell in love with the main characters, but I also
found a love in some of the side characters. James focuses on Savannah and Noah’s story, but also sets the stage for future novels in the series. (Praying I know one of the next main characters🤞🏻*insert image of me “patiently” waiting*) The slow burn build-up made complete sense and led to some great spice! While it took awhile to get to the spice, I felt entertained and invested in their story. Noah and Savannah’s support of each other is breathtakingly sweet, but their ability to push the other’s buttons is relatable and fun.
As this is my first read of a K.A. James novel, I can say that I didn’t feel out of the loop for missing the first two books, but they have definitely made my TBR list!
🤍Thanks to K.A. James for trusting me with their third installment to their series in return for my personal review🤍
Don’t Make Promise is the first book I’ve read by K.A. James and I loved this book!! Don’t Make Promises is the 3rd book in the Breaking the Rules Series and now I can’t wait to read the first two.
Savannah is Jack’s little sister. Noah is Jack’s best friend. Noah and Savannah have been in love with each other since the first day they met. The only problem is he made a promise to Jack to not touch or hurt his sister. Since Jack has been more like a brother to him he takes that promise seriously, even if it hurts him.
Years later Noah is living with his girlfriend Sutton when he gets a call from Jack asking for a favor helping Savannah. After catching her boyfriend in the act with her former roommate Savannah leaves him, and checks into a cheap hotel, Noah comes to get her and moves her in with him. That changes everything between them.
There were times I wanted to yell at Noah and say what are you doing just make a call. Then I could understand his loyalty even when I didn’t agree with it. I love Savannah, she’s so independent and doesn’t back down from a fight. I love their personalities and when they are together how well they read each other. I highly recommend this book and I guarantee you will love their story. I was given this as an ARC for my honest thoughts and opinions. I give this 4.5 stars
Don’t Make Promises is Book 3 from the Breaking the Rules series by KA James. I got this to ARC review and started it right away! Since I received my ARC a week before release I wasn’t able to read the first 2 books before this one. At least I can say they can be read as standalone!
Savannah loses her job, goes through a bad break up and needs to get out! She gets saved by none other than her brother’s best friend and the man she’s been in love with since she met him. She never thought he shared the same feelings as he never once took a second look at her. But turns out Noah is absolutely head over heels for her but made a promise to her brother that he would never hurt her.
This book is 313 pages and keeps a pretty steady pace throughout the story. The book keeps you pretty engaged even as a slow burn. There’s some fun teasing and banter that comes with romcoms. Of course we have a ton of tropes and micro tropes just to name a few:
💜Billionaire MMC
💜Brothers Best Friend
💜Close Proximity
💜Angst
💜Slow Burn
The characters are well written and the plot line is good but it felt like it was missing something. I just didn’t fall in love with these characters personally.
Overall, I did enjoy reading this book. Regardless of how I felt about these characters and their stories it was still a good read. I do plan to go back and read the first 2 books in this series soon!
~ K.A. James, you did an awesome job again!!! I enjoyed reading Savannah and Noah’s story on how a promise can be misread when being just kids! But the fear of even breaking that promise gets in the way on true love! This is when both MC just suffer on down low until they finally give in to temptation!!! Don’t make Promises has you wanting to scream, laugh, pull your hair out… LOL!! Also it’s a bit of a slow burn romance but totally worth it. You get to read POVs of both MC past and future events with theirs feelings being involved for one another, and then BOOM!!! The spicy scenes comes and here comes their addiction to one another, the electricity that runs through them!!! OMG!!!! I just loved everything, every little detail… This is for sure a forbidden love story, falling for her brother’s best friend, and brother accepting their love… it’s just the perfect happily ever after ending.!!! Reader K.A. James will never disappoint when you just want to read a spicy romance!!!!
Absolutely loved the story of Savvannah "Van" and Noah. The style of book is my favourite, past story mixed with current story, giving a full picture of what happens and why. I wish there was more to be honest as the push and pull between them was addictive.
Savvanah and Noah are thrown together when she leaves her ex. The magnetism between them leaps off the page, and the slow burn is broken up nicely, with inserts of their past history and story.
And Noah! His words around 70% into the book are fire!!! And his actions whoo whee!!! Had me fanning myself.
I love that this is a believable story, their actions remain true to themselves, their unrequited feelings for each other held them back for others, no matter how they tried. The pace and writing style is one I love to find, and I will devour everything from this author! If I could give more than 5 stars I would.
Tropes brothers best friend, teen love, slow burn, alpha man, strong female main character, and an exciting slow burn I hope for Sutton and Jack. If you loved Something Borrowed you will love this book, although Noah mans up in a more manly better way!!!
Yeah no
Not safe : has a girlfriend ( sutton) for half the book while the H Savannah stays with them
He emotionally and mentally cheat on his gf by fantasizing and thinking about Savannah and blames his reaction to her by his lack of connection to Sutton while sleeping with her in the same bed
Plus he treated his gf like absolute shit by not being there for her and not informing her that he's bringing a strange woman to live with them.
Sutton was a sweetheart she was a good friend to savannah and tried her best to befriend her and be hospitable only to be betrayed by both of them.
I found myself rooting for her while hoping Noah and Savannah would fall in a ditch
Then when they break up and he gets with the Savannah
His Sutton gets with his bestfriend and savannah 's brother Jacks who ig they've had feelings for each other for years
I felt no connection to the MCs nor was i rooting for them, Noah stringing Sutton along and emotionally cheating on her with a girl that he also treated like shit because " he can't have her " , and savannah was absolute trash for being friends with Sutton while lusting over Noah in their own house
This was my first book by this author and it was amazing! I loved Savannah and Noah’s story! They definitely will make you cry…
Loved the flashbacks of their past. They definitely help you understand how obsessed Noah is with Savannah while also showing you how he struggles knowing that he can’t have her.
And that darn promise! I know everyone that reads this book will hate it and for obvious reasons but I kinda liked it… I won’t say much about it but I hate that Jack did that. I do get why he did it, and what he meant by that promise which is later found out at the end of the book, but it could have save them so much heartbreak if he would have just said it! 😂
I do recommend reading this book though! It’s a super fast read!
It was so good! I've enjoyed the other books in the Breaking the Rules series, and this one did not disappoint.
Savannah and Noah were so cute, but Noah was so stupid at times (the end had me laughing at his stupidity- you'll see why). But this had the angst of the whole "we can't I'm your brother's best friend". I do think there was some added pressure for Noah to keep the promise he made to Jack (Savannah's brother) because of Noah's past and how much Jack helped him. I do love how all the female characters, for the most part, were kind and encouraging to both Savannah and Noah.
You could cut the tension between Noah and Savannah with a knife. It was a slow burn, but when Noah finally decided to give in, it was all the spicy goodness we wanted.
If you didn't read the others in the series, it is fine to read this one as it is also a standalone. It is interconnected with others in the series, but can 100% be read alone. But I do recommend reading the others because the whole series has been great!
Ahhhhhh what a sweet, sweet story!
I love this whole series of books and grouping of characters but Noah and Savannah 🥹🥹 LOVETHEM.
The series is very cute and you get all the hallmark movie feels with the added bonus of steamy scenes making these definetly the sort of books you want on your nightstand!
So Savannah(Van) insta lusts for her big bros new bestie when he transfers in from New York to Montgomery but straight up Jack (her bro) gives Noah (the hunk) the big brother speech and warns him off.
They cross paths constantly over the years and Van never gets over this crush and multiple rejections by Noah when she's tried for it over time as his loyalty to his bestie is unwavering.. 👀
Fast forward 10+ years from their initial meet and after a relationship breakdown and falling on hard times Van ends up shacking up with Noah and his gorgeous girlfriend, Sutton.
ALOT happens.
It's a fabulous read.
I'm not ruining anymore.
Just know that it's gonna work out, there is a HEA and you're gonna cry a little at times but man is it worth the ride.
It is very rare that I get to the 3rd book in a series and enjoy it more than the first two, but Don’t Make Promises was one of those few. In my dark romance era, this forced proximity, brother’s best friend romance was a breath of fresh air that I didn’t know I needed!
The tension between Savannah and Noah the second they hit the pages together was palatable and kept me turning them late through the night. I think this edition was KA James best to date, both in terms of writing fluidity and tension building between two characters that I did not want to end.
Without giving too much away, this is the story of two individuals who have been interested in each other from when they met and throughout time and things keeping them apart, still managed to end up in a forced living arrangement. Get ready to enjoy this marginally angsty, definitely sassy and some yummy spice thrown in!
“I’m to devour every inch, angel, and I can’t fucking wait.” -Noah
“I don’t want you to chase me because I want you to do the first thing you said.” -Savannah
Don't make promises or maybe listen to what you're promising 🤦🏽‍♀️. This book 3 in the series and it was a superb Brothers Best Friend and Off Limits story.
I loved Savanah, she could easily be my friend. Her bubbly personality and the sarcasm that just rolls off her tongue is hilarious. I felt her pain with all the rejection and the snippets we get of their past. She is so strong to be living in the same place as her love of her life and his girlfriend.
Noah, Noah, Noah. The very protective, grumpy, Possessive, hot alpha.
He is a man of his word and his promise to Savanah's brother is in ironclad. He has been fighting his attraction because he values all Jack has done for him.
I will be honest, Savanah is so strong because he really was giving me whiplash with all the back and forth emotional turmoil going on in his head. When he does give in (finally!!!) they are so hot together.
But when it comes to it will his love for win or his promise to his best friend?
Great read full of witty banter, emotion, friendship, slow burn, super hot and love.
Savannah and Noah's story was a really cute one, though fraught with some twists and turns. It definitely falls into the slow burn category - the brother's best friend trope certainly amplifies this. But the wait for their relationship is certainly worth it.
The narrative of their history was beautifully weaved, incorporating the dual POV chapters, as well as flashback chapters which helped us see how they got to where they are now. And if my heart didn't hurt for a younger Savannah...
The only thing I will say is the build up for the reasoning they didn't get together sooner? It fell super flat, and was such a non-issue in the end. I feel like the climax just never really... hit.
But overall, a great read from James, and I'll definitely be going back to read the other books in this series.
You could cut the TENSION between our mc’s, Noah and Savannah, with a knife throughout a good portion of the book. The sexual chemistry that they had was fiery. What I marvel at was Savannah’s work ethic and to make ends meet. The side characters were also really enjoying and they contributed to the story. The person who irritated me a bit in the beginning was Noah. While he was respectful towards his girlfriend Sutton, he was also pining hard after Savannah. But his backstory and his promise gave a much more clearer picture why he was acting the way he did. And that’s when everything just shifted for me. In a positive way.
This is a slowburn and omg when the burn finally hit, IT FREAKING HIT.
KA James has quickly become one of my favorite Authors. I have loved this series very much & this book did not disappoint. I really enjoyed reading the Story of Savannah & Noah. It was such a great story from the first page to the last. I just couldn’t get enough of all the characters but these two held a soft spot on this readers heart. It had just enough spice and I throughly enjoyed the chemistry between them. KA James creates characters that you as the reader get invested in and stories that you don’t want to end. I cannot say enough words on how much I thoroughly enjoyed Savannah and Noah’s story. This series was just phenomenal but you can also read each book as a standalone. Thank you for creating such wonderful characters that keep this reader looking forward to your next book. Pure perfection from beginning to end.
Savannah has multiple jobs and when she came back from one she walked into her ex cheating on her. She called her brother but he was elsewhere so he called his best friend and her childhood crush.
Noah is a billionaire and jack’s best friend he has also repressed feelings for her since they met as children. However, when jack calls one night saying to help Savannah and keep her safe. He picks her up and she stays in his apartment and all the feelings begin to resurface
I love these two so much!! Savannah is a strong confident woman who won’t take anyone’s shit and Noah is a handsome billionaire who is off limits…. That’s the recipe for an amazing book!!!
I want to thank KA James for allowing me an arc to this book I am so grateful and devoured it!!!🥰🥰
5 ⭐️'s and 3 🌶's
This was the 3rd book in the Breaking The Rules series. A brother's best friend, slow burn, forbidden romance. It was the second one I had read of hers, and I really enjoy her writing style.
This was a very angsty story for me. I'm very impatient by nature and just wanted Savannah and Noah together already, but in the end, I thoroughly enjoyed the slow ride. Their chemistry was fabulous, and when it finally happened, it was panty melting.
Many times, I just wanted to slap Noah, our MMC upside his head, and strongly urge him on, but he went at his own pace, and it made for a very satisfying outcome!! The real spice came in more that halfway through the book, but well worth the wait.
"His voice is thick with lust as he promises. “I’ll spend the rest of my life making these lost years up to you, angel. Any way you like. You own me. You have for a very long time.” -Noah
Just swoon worthy!
