Gavin English #3

Babysitting Money

Rate this book
Gavin English isn't in Chicago searching for an unfaithful woman's wedding ring out of the goodness of his heart. He's doing it for the fifty thousand dollar check the unfaithful woman gave him. All he has to do is track down the pretty boy who stole it—in one of the biggest cities in the country.

Lucky for Gavin, ex-police Lieutenant Jack Daniels knows her way around the city—her city—and she's agreed to set aside her mommy duties for a few days, so that she can babysit him and his assistant while they're in town.

But somewhere between Gavin's visit to the busted-down crackhouse and their stop at a low-rent donut shop, Jack's peaceful babysitting gig turns deadly and the bullets start flying.

BABYSITTING MONEY brings together Ken Lindsey's heavy drinking, hard-boiled PI (TO THE BONE, ON THE EDGE) and J.A. Konrath's retired hero cop/brand-new mommy (WHISKEY SOUR, SHAKEN) for an intense, laugh-out-loud thriller.

Joe Konrath has written over a dozen novels in the Lt. Jacqueline "Jack" Daniels thriller series. They do not have to be read chronologically to be enjoyed, but the order is: Whiskey Sour, Bloody Mary, Rusty Nail, Dirty Martini, Fuzzy Navel, Cherry Bomb, Shaken, Stirred, Rum Runner, Last Call, White Russian, Shot Girl, and Chaser. More coming soon.

If you love Jack Daniels and her cast of supporting characters, you should know about the Jack Daniels and Associates Mysteries, which include the titles Dead On My Feet, Dying Breath, Everybody Dies, Shot of Tequila, Serial Killers Uncut (with Blake Crouch), Jack Daniels Stories Vols 1-4, and Banana Hammock.

Wow, that's a lot of Jack.

If you like your thrillers on the dark side, check out the Konrath Dark Thriller Collective, which includes the books The List, Origin, Afraid, Trapped, Endurance, Haunted House, Webcam, Disturb, What Happened To Lori, The Nine, Close Your Eyes, and Second Coming.

Joe also wrote the Stop A Murder mystery puzzle series, where you become the sleuth and solve brain teasers to try and catch a killer.

He also wrote the sci-fi trilogy, Timecaster, Timecaster Supersymmetry, and Timecaster Steampunk. Even if you don't think you like sci-fi, give them a try. They feature Joe's well-known characters from his other series, and are insane.

With Ann Voss Peterson he wrote the Codename: Chandler thrillers, including Flee, Spree, Three, Hit, Exposed, Naughty, Fix (with F. Paul Wilson), and Rescue.

And, finally, he wrote erotica under the pen name Melinda DuChamp, also with Ann Voss Peterson.

Joe writes a lot. You should probably read everything.

A great collaboration between two hard-hitting writers of gritty thrillers featuring their iconic - and internally conflicted - heroes. Konrath's "Jack Daniels" and Lindsey's "Gavin English" make a fine team in this straightforward suspense story. A missing ring, a hostage situation, and humorous repartee all work together to provide some edge-of-your seat thrills typical of these Jack Daniels collaborations that are just now being released. Babysitting Money is a great addition to the series.

Full of Humor

In this book, cowritten with Ken Lindsey, as usual when Jack is involved, nothing is ever simple. Even in a book of 49 pages (Kindle Unlimited is my best friend) stuff happens.

Babysitting is exactly what Jack is supposed to be doing. A PI from out of town needs basically a babysitter/tour guide. Everyone agreed, Harry, who set the whole thing up (he was at a convention), Jack, and most of all, Phineas, that this was an easy way for Jack to get out of the house. She's getting antsy being a stay at home mom.

Jack being Jack, she can't stay out of trouble. Not at the crack house which didn't bother her (but scared the visiting PI's assistant nearly to death). No, it was the next stop.

Full of typical Konrath humor - even more so in this short story - some of the things that go on would be unbelievable except for it's Jack, after all.

This is a must read for anyone who loves/hates Harry. Truly.

Funny. Love the dialogue between Gavin English and assistant, Kara. Jack Daniel's is called into this case. Shes a new mother and shouldn't be out there.
Three great characters in this short read. I'm giving 4 stars instead of 5 because English smokes in a non smoke hotel room. I HATE cig smoke! He also trapped Kara in the smoke filled car. It was all funny, but yuck. I started with this book. Now I'm going to read Bk 1 and 2. Very entertaining!

Always danger

Just a simple job for Jack Daniels doesn't exist. Gavin English is prone to danger, too. Very interesting short read and looking forward to reading the first book I the series.

A great novella! I love a Jack Daniels story and I'm really intrigued by the English character. I'll be picking up Ken Lindsey's work and having a peek in!

Great read!
