Well, yes. Unfortunately, as I feared, it's nowhere near as good as the first part.
It's not a bad book, but it's sooooo boring.
I would have liked to spend more time with Kirby's POV, but unfortunately, in the second book, we're inside Harlen's head. And well, it's pretty boring in there. He always has the same thoughts and goes around in circles. The way he thinks is also super boring.
On top of that, there's hardly any plot.
I like that it's slower paced. After everything was very insta-ish in the first book, I'm glad that the three boys are given time to be completely on their own, to solidify their relationship, and to grow closer to each other. But this takes up more than half of the book. It's not until about 60% of the way through that there's any kind of suspense... Unfortunately, it's very brief.
It only gets interesting at the end of the book, and I'm pretty grateful that it's over. As a preview, the third part is written from Cai's point of view, and after the first chapter, I can say that it reads much better. I hope that continues. The story itself is developing in an interesting direction, and I'm curious to see where it goes.
Otherwise, there are a few delicious sex scenes again, but here too, Harlen's point of view is pretty lame for me.
“Pesky things, emotions,” I drawl.
He doesn’t look at me, but I can still see a faint smile tugging at the corner of his lips. He knows how I feel about him. Just like I know how he feels about me. Heavens’ forbid we ever say it out loud. Much to Kirby’s eternal exasperation. He will make us do it one day, I’m sure of it. Until then, we will remain a pair of macho idiots who don’t communicate like we should.
🙄
Kissing was supposed to just be the prelude, but now I don’t want to stop. There is so much we can say to each other with this gentle touch. Things we will never say with words. I can feel his love and tenderness for me. His devotion. I know he can feel mine. I am telling him my promises to him. My promise to never leave him, to never hurt him, to always give him everything that I can.
🙄
“I’m fine, I promise,” says Kirby, sounding exasperated.
I raise an eyebrow at him, and he flushes. “Sorry.” He is forgetting to talk telepathically again? It really is adorable. I don’t want Kirby to ever change.
He is a bright light shining in the darkness of the world. Everybody should get to have a Kirby in their life.
