Plot summary: Christmas Magic is a Contemporary Fiction novel. It is a story about Katie who loses a best friend and secretly hopes that Santa will bring her another one. She is a mischievous girl who is mostly nice but gets in trouble a lot. I like this book because even though Katie does several bad things (like cheating on a spelling test, stealing suckers, and doing things she is told no to), she tries to make up for all the bad things. She confesses about the cheating, pays for the sucker, etc…. Another good theme to this book is that the parents want the family to bring food and gifts to the homeless on Christmas Eve.
Activities:
#1 Katie’s teacher implements a Secret Santa week for the class. The rule is that no money must be spent. Have students make of list of ten items they could give to a classmate that would not cost anything to make.
#2 Katie deals with losing a friend. Lead a discussion on ways the encourage friendship. List those items on the board and list some items that discourage friendship. Have students write a paragraph on their own experience with friendship.
