I read this book while I was living in Ghana (in fact, I actually got this book while I was in Kukurantumi, the setting of the novel.) There is something slightly off about the writing in the book, but I can't quite put my finger on what it is. Possibly a mismatch between the level of the syntax and of the vocabulary? I did find some of the techniques the author used interesting, particularly the use (and repetition) of proverbs, even going so far as to use them to represent the internal thoughts of characters. In the end, I would say that the novel is more interesting than good, but it is fairly interesting.

Perhaps I was expecting too much because the story felt rushed to me and I couldn't find my self settling in to a comfortable pace. The narrative felt quirky in so many places. Finally a lot of a lot of the communication between author and reader was bundled into ungraceful paragraphs and chapters, so it left me unable to thoroughly enjoy the story.
