Rowena Andrews spent her childhood searching for Dragons and talking to animals and started turning that into words when she was bored in class. She wrote her first book at fourteen and while it lives forever in the bottom of the sock drawer, the encouragement from her English Teacher meant the writing bug took hold and never went away.
Rowena has a BSc in Geography and a PG Diploma in Coastal and Maritime Societies and Cultures. She moved to Scotland for University, fell in love with the place and never left, and now lives and works on the east Fife coast.
When she’s not writing or reading, she’s hoarding dice and playing Dungeons & Dragons, and submitting to the whims of a demanding cat and a pair of mini dachshunds.
Rowena Andrews has previously written a short story I really enjoyed so I was happy to jump at this one as well. While the storyline wasn’t quite to my liking (which is just personal taste), I still really enjoyed how she continues to step out of the norm that you tend to expect and craft stories that are… different. I love trying different stories so I’m still happy to have read this and am looking forward to seeing what she does next!
Saw this for free on Twitter and immediately gave it a go! It just released the 14th, so check it out!
I wish this had been available for my spooky season reads, but it was good nonetheless. This felt like it had the same vibe as Dark Harvest by Norman Partridge, while being entirely different. Maybe it’s just the pumpkin heads.
Why is it that spooky stories come alive? Why is it that the dark and terrible lore is always true? The Pumpkin King is no different. Emil never believed it, was made fun of during the war for sharing it as a tale from his town. But clearly something is taking people out every autumn. Now that he’s home, that doesn’t mean it’s any realer, right?
Personally a 4/5*. Concise, written well, and dark.
This short story was deliciously dark and spooky. The atmospheric descriptions helped to build tension, and the horror of the murders was palpable. The Pumpkin King is a terrifying figure straight out of legend, a serial killer who haunts the village of Alberg in the Fall. I enjoyed the final twist in the tale. The Hunt of the Pumpkin King is another winning story from Rowena Andrews!
