⭐️ 5 / 5 ⭐️ SUCH. A. GOOD. SERIES. “good” isn’t even a good enough word. it’s my absolute favorite series. i’m sooo ready for book ten!!! DEX BETTER GET ON ANOTHER COVER OR I’MA LOSE IT!!!! sokeefe all the way 🫶🏼🫶🏼🫶🏼 i’m doing like a full review (as if someone reads my reviews lol) of this because it’s my absolute favorite series. i think this is the EXACT book set my parents got me for christmas lol

• characters (theres a lot here, be prepared) •

sophie •
main character and one of my favorites. i love project moonlark & all but sometimes she just has too much plot armor. she is such a smart and sweet character but i think she needs a few less powers. i do love project moonlark (as i said earlier) and putting her in the human world, but she just has too much plot armor! i do really really love her though!

keefe •
favorite. character. of all time!!! he uses humor to cover up his trauma. i like that he wasn’t just experimented on as a kid, but also being currently experimented on! i’m excited to see what happens to him in book ten with the going numb thing. the thing i’m terrified of is him dying. he’s that one character that deserves a happy ending, but might never get one. it’s either he’s killing his mom, she’s killing him, or they both die. i’m so scared (not for gisela, though, she can die.) /// GUYS LET HIM HAVE FLAWS PLEASE!!! BECAUSE HE DOES!!!

fitz •
(NEW REVIEW) ugh…okay. my opinion on you has changed A LOT. i still do NOT like him & he’s still a jerk, but i don’t hate him. he needs more growth & definitely needs therapy & needs to stop BLAMING EVERYONE FOR HIS PROBLEMS- *deep breath* but i get it. he’s mad for many reasons & i get why. i don’t love him, but i don’t hate him. i dislike him & i do get why he’s mad. though i will NEVER ship fitzphie (how are y’all even real??? 😭), he got a bit, A SMALL TINY BIT, of redemption in my heart. still don’t like him, though. /// (PAST REVIEW) uh ok…what can i say about him…i hate him & he’s an awful person! i want him to die & he’s a jerk. he did not have any right to treat sophie the way he does even if he says “sorry”. i hate him he’s a jerk & that’s all i’m going to say.

dex •
YES, MY LOVE! he’s the sweetest character & i love him so much! he deserves another cover & to be relevent. SHANNON PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PUT HIM ON THE COVER OF BOOK TEN AND MAKE HIM RELEVENT!!! i know you love him.

biana •
yes, yes, YES!!! i love her sooooooooo much! i know some people just see her as someone who just likes pink & stuff, NO SHE’S FREAKING COOL. yes, she does like pink & all that, but she also is an AMAZING fighter. now she has battle scars and loves to show them off. she is ABSOLUTELY AMAZING AND I WANNA BE HER!

tam •
he is absolutely one of my favorites! he deserves all the happy shadow thoughts he can get. i feel bad for him. i do really love his & keefe’s rivalry lol. like they could be such good friends…but they’re not. they’re amazing lol

linh •
she has grown so much & i’m so proud of her! her control of her powers is great now. her & tam are my favorites siblings.

• ships •

sophie & keefe •
YES. ALL THE WAY. SOKEEFE FOR THE WIN. AHHHH! finally after (basically including 8.5) ten books of waiting WE FINALLY GOT THEM!!!

sophie & fitz •
absolutely not. no no no. this is why i hated legacy.

sophie & dex •
UH UH. NOPE. GROSS. THE KISS? EWWWWW

dex & biana or tam & biana? •
tbh i don’t really have an opinion on this one. i think they’re both cute but…kinda rooting for dex & biana 😅 i think tam with her would be cute too, though!

linh & wylie •
yessss!!!! they’re so cute together & it’s obvious they like each other!!!

tam & ranyi / glimmer •
okay, so this is why i’m rooting for dex & biana a little more cause like this would actually be so cute???

top three favorite characters •
1. keefe
2. tam
3. biana

top three favorite books order •
1. stellarlune
2. neverseen
3. exile

★ overall review ★
i love this book series & even as i get older, it will always hold a special place in my heart. thank you shannon so much for creating characters i will love (& hate) for a long time! this series deserves so much love. again, thank you shannon for making me fall in love! can’t wait for book ten!

BRING BACK DEX ✊

i LOVE keefe & very much DISLIKE fitz, but let keefe have his flaws & let fitz have his (very, very slim) good qualities. EVERY. WELL. WRITTEN. CHARACTER. HAS. FLAWS!!!!

If i could possibly rate this negative stars or zero stars I would.

--the characters. first of all the characters are horrendous-if i hate sophie and fitz and keefe and basically everyone else than why on earth would i want them to defeat the neverseen. it would be much better for the world if the neverseen did the kill them. also there are like 5 million characters. it doesn't make sense to have so many, especially when you're only going to give importance to the triangle: sophie fitz and keefe.
--the setting is completely unrealistic. like where the heck did they get all that money from?? did they steal it from the humans? it sure seems like it, thats why 'human-land' is so disgusting. WE DON'T HAVE THE MONEY TO FIX IT
--the plot. which plot? there was a plot? i never saw it or read it. i dont even know what it is? like honestly the problem--the neverseen-- is less than a problem that sophie and her dumb brain is.
the solution--there will never be a solution. there have been 11 books--yes the o.5s count--and the neverseen are all perfectly alive. the only people they have lost is because of themselves, sophie hasn't done anything. s.m. has no idea how to end this story. shes opened so many plot twists to distract you from the plot and its never going to end. im telling you, the best thing would be to create an atom bomb and kill off all the characters because there are so many of them.
--plot twists. i cant even remember all the lame plot twists because there were like 5 new ones in each book, bc of course s.m. has no idea how to write a climax. the only "plot twist" if ypu can call it that, was how mr. forkle was actually two ppl and one of them was alive. personally, i hated mr forkle so this was depressing news and then when he "came back to life" he literally did not do anything except give sophie lectures on things that should not be in her hands--like the world's fate ahem ahem.

overall this series was the biggest waste of my three months and i would never read it again. i haven't read unraveled yet and i probably never will. this book makes me so mad because if i just pass it through my simple checklist it doesn't check off ANY items.

1.charcaters- like i said terrible
2. setting- likewise
3. plot- there was none
4. climax and resolution-we're still waiting for it; doesn't seem to be coming any time soon
5. no weird people-i thought this was going okay, but then i read some reviews for unraveled and there are weird ppl. clearly shannon messenger decided to go on a streak
6. covers-ooofff ok. I don't like the covers. at all. that's all I'm gonna say.
all in all this series didnt check off any of my boxes.

Okay, so this is going to be a really long review. Also, for some reason my Goodreads doesn't let me block spoilers so there is your warning just in case. I had a phase of about a year and a half quite a bit ago where I switched between loving and hating the books. Now I'm in camp What-Is-This-Shit. I haven't written a review on it because I didn't want to stain my Goodreads with cringe but I feel like people need advance notice if their kids are going to buy/read it. The review is probably also rated PG-13 or TV14 for swearing and mentions of mature content. Not me who started that.
Issues within the series - there isn't any racism or sexism or homophobia or most other injustices that exist today. Supposedly. Plus a genetic lesson no one asked for but I hope supports my points.
One: there is no homophobia because there are no LGBTQ+ characters and the author has said there will be no such characters within the main series- I don't know where to find the exact quote but I know she has said it. And then there were these two passerby lesbian/gay characters in book 9.5 (I regret reading it I must say, the book went out with the recycling. I reviewed for the sake of being pissed that 90% of the fandom hated on the book not for its terrible plot/dialogue/character arcs and relationships but that there were approximately 4 paragraphs total of that LGBTQ+ content. I digress. Read my review if you want to.) but there was no role for them other than to provide 0.09468739857% of diversity.
Two: There isn't a lot of racial diversity either- the three main characters who are the main love triangle that is the main plot point are white, and I can probably count on one hand the diverse characters off the top of my head.
Three: As for sexism, the main character who is supposed to be this uber-powerful genetic experiment who's gonna take down the baddies and save the world but is instead usually spending weeks in bed from being in some bad situation or agonizing over crushes to said crushes-i.e, a wimp. Screw it. Annabeth Chase was the same age and while she had to face tough situations and romantic tensions she got her shit together and actually had a plan for her internal and external conflicts - she didn't let it get in the way like this. And all the men seem to have the most important assignments or undercover missions or lead roles. The closest we got to a female standout was probably Vespera or Gisela for a bit and they both ended up turning out soft or overthrown by male counterparts, securing the image of weak women.
Four: some really stupid discrimination for being Talentless or a "multiple birth' and other weird genetic stuff, some of which is elaborated on in the statement below. For supposedly being the most intelligent species on ye old Planet Earth, if you don't have a special ability you're inferior and socially rejected your whole "eternal" life because something's "wrong" with your genes (it's an outlier to be Talentless in this society) and you don't get a magical power so you can't get a decent job or respectability or human elvin rights. Or, if you were a twin or triplet or a quadruplet something's wrong with you and your parents. Like, what? Again with the whole you're-supposedly-the-most-advanced-species thing: how is (sorry for getting all science nerdy and weird, this is going to continue for a bit) a female releasing two or three or more ova at once or said ova dividing into two+ resulting in twins or triplets an issue? I can get behind the Talentless thing a lot more than the twin thing, but they're both wrong.
Five: really weird marriage stuff. There's this thing where you only have 500 opposite-sex people you can marry based on your DNA so you and your partner can produce the best children (so really, your government isn't quite looking for your health and happiness; they're looking at how you can f*ck and breed the next, better generation. Sound dystopian yet?). If you fail to comply and marry one of the people on those lists, you're called a bad match and therefore "likely to produce less genetically desirable children". This is based on the fact that because, barring circumstances such as fatal accidents and murder, you're going to live forever and look young and beautiful, so we gotta make sure you don't marry your great-great-great-grandniece or nephew, right? That's why you're only matched with people you have NO genetic connections to. Totally plausible! Except it isn't. Every single living being shares some DNA with other species, because we are descended from the universal common ancestor from billions of years ago that survived long enough to pass down traits that allowed the following species life. In fact, humans share 99% of DNA with each other- that one percent makes up all the variations of our hair/skin/eye color, body type, height, and other characteristics, and I would assume some temperament genes thrown in there too- that's part of evolution as how you react affects survival. And it also doesn't make sense because if the elvin population is a tiny fraction of humans, I would guess about less than a million, at some point down the road (if not a while back up it) you're going to be distantly related to everybody. That's why there are laws about how closely you can be genetically related to someone and be in a non-familial/platonic relationship in today's world- but who knows how long it'll take for that to happen in this one.
Six: The whole series no longer has any plot- it just seems to be three equally incompetent groups forming alliances and then not working together and basically ending with all drama, no threat. I remember reading that the series was supposed to be a trilogy but it's been going on for over 10years and what, 12 books now? Along with the lack of plot, it's simply dissolved into romance and a bad one at that, with several interconnected love triangles that seem to have no plans on being solved.
Seven: There's an excessive amount of violence and substance use. I swear, one book cannot go by without someone getting seriously injured, dying, or getting drugged. More on that last one- teenagers have access to that stuff. Literally anybody in this world can give themselves "a few hours of peace" and nobody blinks an eye. It's encouraged sometimes, I feel like. And I don't think there was ever any mention of a rehab center or a hospital because addictions and overdoses on opioids happen IDGAF about how enlightened your society is and how well all your citizens are and being 100% mentally okay and so much better than us mortal humans that they don't fall into the trap of substances. As for the violence, there's kidnapping, torture, enslavement (mentioned not carried out in the focal parts of the story), stabbing, poisonous materials used intentionally for harm, explosives (the people can blow things up with their minds. Think of the *blows up pancakes with mind* mY f#ck!nG pAncAKes CapCut but with buildings, people, objects that will cause bodily harm, etc.), arson, death threats, murder, attempted murder, PTSD, weapons such as swords, knives, projectiles, instruments of extreme pain, etc.
Eight: There's actually pretty explicit content. Book 4- Equine reproduction..........I don't really wanna go into much detail but the magical flying sparkly winged horses are not like the kids' version of said magical flying sparkly winged horses. They are helping........multiply the amount of magical flying sparkly winged horses. It's not-so-subtley-subtle. And then in book 8 we get to hear a guy talk about his wife and him trying to have kids. Great, because I really wanted to hear about all that sTuFf

I absolutely love this series with my whole heart. I have read all 11 books (including book 8.5 Unlocked and 9.5 Unravelled) and that has to show my love in some way. Sophie Foster and all of her friends have taken me through really hard times and I have truly found my home in the Lost Cities.

I first started reading Keeper of the Lost Cities during Covid when I was in fourth grade. Seeing a girl main character that was around my age, blonde hair, brown eyes, felt different, and had anxiety made me feel like I wasn't so weird. In a lot of movies/tv shows and books girls with blonde hair normally have blue eyes. I wanted blue eyes for so long, but then I read about Sophie Foster.

Keeper of the Lost Cities (Book #1): When I started reading this for the first time, I couldn't get into it. Then, when I realized there was literally nothing else to do since the entire world had shut down, I started it again. I was pulled right into the world of the Lost Cities. There is so much information of this book but I love the way Shannon Messenger is able to lay out the entire world. Whether it is the Council, or the different homes, or even just Foxfire, I felt like I understood what was going on. I was on Team Fitzphie for the first couple books, and I absolutely adore Dex and I love that they become best friends right away. The ending completely blew my mind and I wanted answers immediately, which only meant I needed to read more.

Exile (Book #2): I don't remember specific details of this book, but I do love the entrance of Silveny and the beginning tension of Sophie and Keefe.

Everblaze (Book #3): I was giggling and kicking my feet reading this one at the time because we were getting for Fitzphie time. Looking back, it is not my favorite, but it does build Sophie to who she is as a person. I will never forgive Shannon for killing off Kenric. He was such an angel and I loved him so much.

Neverseen (Book #4): To this day, this is my favorite book. The friend group finally begins to form, and we have our first adventure as a group running from the Lost Cities. Meeting the members of the Black Swan was thrilling and I love the introduction to Linh and Tam. I was obsessed with the whole Sophie and Fitz cognantes thing. However, Fitz took it too far and just became annoying with it. The betrayal of Keefe literally had me throw my book across the room, but it was a great cliffhanger.

Lodestar (Book #5): I was waiting for Keefe to come back and what I remember for this book, it wasn't my favorite. I like seeing just normal Lost Cities life and the sleepover at Dex's house is truly iconic.

Nightfall (Book #6): If there was a way to hate Vespera and Lady Gisela more, it was this book. I hated what they did to all of them, especially Biana. However, it was great for Biana's character arc to get over her insecurity of her scars and just embrace them. This was really encouraging to me as a really insecure 12 year old.

Flashback (Book #7): I do not care what anyone else says, this one will always be one of my favorites. I loved the Fitz and Sophie stuff, but I also loved the whole subplot of Silveny with the babies. It will always hold a special place in my heart.

Legacy (Book #8): Now we're talking. I got out of my Fitz delusion and realized how much of a drama queen with anger issues he really is (No hate to Fitz, Keefe is just better).

Unlocked (Book #8.5): I love reading this one if I forget a minor detail about someone or something. It is nice to clear the air of what characters look like and how you pronounce their names. I am obsessed though with Keefe's POV and finally getting to see into the real him. I was super sad when he left the Lost Cities and I hated the cliff hanger.

Stellarlune (Book #9): This is the first book I had to wait for and I have a specific memory getting it too. It was the first day it was being released to book stores and we were in New York City visiting our family friends. The older sister (who is also a huge KOTLC fan) and I practically ran to the nearest Barnes and Noble as soon as it opened and snagged the first ones we could right off of the cart as the lady was putting them on the shelf. I love love love this book. And can I just say FINALLY. Oh my gosh. I waited 9 full books for Keefe and Sophie to finally get together, and let me just say I would wait again.

Unravelled (Book #9.5): I loved getting a full book from Keefe's POV (even though book #10 would have been great Shannon...). I also really liked the comeback of Alvar because I always him, even if he did betray his family and everyone he loved. It was super funny and I adored seeing inside Keefe's head to all of him, even the broken parts. I'm also so so happy we got Keefe's side of the kiss scene. It is so so perfect.

Overall, one of my all time favorite series and I recommend to anyone ever even though it is young adult.

This series is amazing. From magical powers to tiny imps there’s always something happening in the lost cities. It’s about a group of friends that have to fight and take down a group of villains. There’s rivalry and jokes, human cookies and stuffed dragons. This is my comfort series and I love it sooooo much. It takes me about a week to read each book and there about 11 in the series right now.

Ok…

In February (my very least favorite month) of 2022, I was fourteen years old and I broke my jaw after falling off a zipline. My bottom teeth went through my chin and I couldn’t move my jaw for that whole despicable month and I sat on the couch and I wondered what I would do if not run and bike and ski and dance and frolic because that is what I did when I was fourteen. But now even yawning was painful, so instead of chasing my younger siblings on the front lawn, I chased Sophie Foster around The Lost Cities.
I was absolutely enthralled.
Mostly by Lord Hunkyhair.
Yuck.

Here’s what I loved:
For a twelve-year-old, this is a fun book. I wish I could use a more eloquent description, but I feel I must use a flat, basic word to reflect the flat, basic writing style. It’s so easy to read, so people pleasing, that I could not put it down. It really is quite fun.
Keefe Sensen is charismatic, selflessly selfish, emotionally abused, babygirl, so attractive, a ridiculous bad boy, blonde, but not, and a complete cinnamon roll. Take it or leave it.
Basically, he’s a twelve year old girl’s dream.
He was my dream boy for a whole year (I just cringed so bad).
And the Lost Cities?
Beautiful- really a creative, complex idea. The characters? Quite iconic.

And yet….

Here’s what I hated:
That they were all supermodels. That the trolls were happily slaves to the elves. The council. The politics. The random plot twists. The excessive descriptions trying to be poetic but failing. How weird Sophie was about her human family. The lack of themes. The lack of anything remotely deep.
Sophie. Freaking. Foster.
Every single character except for Keefe.
And even him.
I was fed up with each and every elf by the end.

I’m something of a LOTR nerd.
Messenger mentions LOTR in the series.
“Yeah, Tolkien got pretty close to what it’s really like in the magical world.”

HELLO?!?!?!

Don’t even talk about Tolkien my dear Shannon. Don’t even bring him up.
Please.

Shannon, I love you- I really do. You got me through a month of agonizing recovery.
Keefe sustained me.

But don’t bring up Tolkien.

Because if one is looking for a fast paced, ya fantasy series that has love triangles, and attractive characters, and a magic school, and Alicorns and other magical creatures, and school drama, and slow slow slow burn romance, and evil parents and girl power then one would be happy to read KOTLC.

Yet if one is looking for a book that will teach you important lessons, make you cry, cause you to use your brain at all, make you actually feel anything but a weirdly obsessive love for a dramatic blonde boy, then say pass to this. When I grow up and recommend books for my twelve year olds, this one won’t be on the list next to Pax, Narnia, the False Prince, the Wingfeather Saga, The Green Ember, and Prince Academy. This one will be reserved for if my child happens to get an injury that keeps them on the couch.

It’s a good distraction.
Not a good book.

I have a lot of complaining to do about this series but I'll just stick to the highlights.
1. It's been going on for too long. I'm so ready for the conclusion and have been for a while.
2. These books are rather long and yet I feel like barely anything is happening in each one.
3. Why is the counsel having a bunch of annoying teenagers handle such a sensitive situation?
4. Sophie is WAY too special. A good character is often a relatable character and Sophie just isn't. She's also just kinda dumb.
5. The elves are really self-centred and completely rearguard human science, and I know that this is a fantasy book, but as a science person, that just bugs me. The elves also take credit for inspiring the writing of The Lord of the Rings, which is crossing a seriously hard line.
6. These so-called "elves" just feel more like glorified humans and have zero link to elves in traditional mythology.
7. Lady Gisela does not yet have a backstory (as far as I know) I really want one. She's a really interesting character and I really want to know more about her like how she even ended up with the Neverseen.
8. This book's writing style is definitely for middle grade readers as intended but some of the content is really..... not.
9. None of the characters really have depth and feel a bit copy and paste. (Except Keefe of course) The copy and paste things also applies to the plots.
10. The lack of diversity. I have yet to see any LGBTQ characters and a lot of the characters are white and many of those with blonde hair.

I am currently 20 years old and started reading this when I was probably 16.
The best thing about this series is probably Keefe. Which is funny because I don't think he was ever meant to be some big main character but look where we are now!
Honestly in terms of plot, I don't know if the author has some big grand plans but currently it feels like she doesn't know the direction its headed in either. A lot of the books are at least 400+ pages long but honestly a lot of the times it feels like literally only one of the million problems they have gets semi resolved. There is never a lot of progression and after 9 books (excluding the .5's) you would think we were getting somewhere.
I think the problem is that I am probably a bit too old for the series. I can definitely see younger readers absolutely adoring the books. Make no mistakes I loved this series when I first started reading it as well, the love square was highly entertaining and is actually what has gotten me this far honestly.

I just think the books need to start getting wrapped up and I am just hoping that it will be done properly and soon.

Starts of with amazing, captivating writing.
I love the first five books; I constantly felt engaged and wanting to read more.

However, as the series went on, chapters became longer and the series started to become mundane and tedious to read. By the point of the 9th book it feels like there’s so much padding and filler making it incredibly unfun to read, and chapters take so much longer than how the series started. Later in the series, it feels like the same event occur a number of times: protagonists feel like they’re getting very strong and powerful, then they fight the antagonists and whoops! They’re very weak compared to them.

Don’t get me started on the 7th book, where literal hundreds number of pages are dedicated to where the two main protagonist characters are just talking to each other in a single room.

Also I will say that the “8.5th” book is a bit of a cash grab; it’s a guide to the universe but also includes a section at the end continuing the story, meaning that you’re required to read it to keep reading the series to the 9th book.

Again, amazing series, 5th books are excellent, but I would say it really loses what makes it such a joy to read halfway through.

I give it 3 1/2 stars
I have read every one of these books
Honestly it’s a good series up until about book 4 and a half or so
Then it just gets long
400-700 pages could’ve been condensed into 300 pages
I want to love this series but please just end it already
The series had such great potential but the characters aged and their personalities didn’t
They’re 16-20 and act like they did when they were 12 at the start of the series and now it just feels like it’s running in circles

That being said
I will still be reading the last book lol
I really did/do love this series and want to see how it ends
But 12 books is just too much (including the guide book and the one from keefes perspective)

The Keeper of the Lost Cities series is my all-time favorite series. It has just the right amount of action, humor, and romance, with plenty of room left for imagination and making the story your own. I have never before been able to iimagine a scene or character so well as if it were happening right here. And in my mind, it is! This series is really unlike anything I have seen before. I was able to enjoy reading, while at the sae time learning from the characters' mistakes, taking enccouragement from story quotes, etc. If you are looking for a fantasy series, this one is highly recommended.

I looooooooove Keeper of the Lost cities. I love it with a passion. It has a little mix of all of it. I has a bit of romance, and violence. The characters are AMAZING. They were so beautify created. Sophie and Kefee are my favorite characters. They make the CUTEST couple. It's really good and long series. Especially if you like long books like me. And when I mean long books i mean like each book has at least 300 pgs.

I loved this series when I read it I love the world and our main character my favorite character is definitely Keefe and tam but our main character Sophie could annoy me at times but she is still a decent fmc I have read a lot of more mature books since I read this so I’m not obsessed with it anymore but when I read it I was obsessed and it is a great kids series would highly recommend!!!

THIS BOOK SERIES IS SERIOUSLY THE BEST SERIES EVER. The drama, action, romance, conflict, all of it is amazing. The plot is super original and the Black Swan don’t have a ton of plot armor like some books would. I read the entire series in about a month, still waiting for the next one! My absolute fav was Stellarlune, HELLO SOKEEFE!!!! GO SWING FROM A CHANDELIER RITZ CRACKER!!!!

This series was an awesome series that I read through each. The ideas that it took to create this book were awesome I thank Messenger for writing. I don't know how big I am on romance and all but I did enjoy the series and the KOTLC Fanbase!!

I love this series with all of my heart. I cannot tell you how special this series is to me. The thing that has removed that 5th star for me was just how many books there is, I personally feel like the series has dragged on but either way LOVED this.

I read every book. EVERY BOOK and I love them. They are my comfort books for ever. Shannon is a genius. Kinda have to say that Sophie can be annoying some times but the plot twists were crazy. But Shannon do you really have to kill Evers nice character?!
