It is a little remembered fact that not only soldiers went to war; many animals were taken too. The purple poppy that we wear on the National Day for War Animals was created to honour animals like Simpson's donkey for their courage and fortitude, and the comfort they gave to soldiers. Wear a Purple Poppy Day by Fiona White and Illustrated by Kathleen O'Hagan is a wonderful picture book remembering animals in war.
It starts with a poem and then each spread illustrates lines from the poem - honouring a wide range of animals that have helped in war from ship’s cats to elephants, with horses, dogs, donkeys, mules, camels and pigeons in between - as well as different theatres and eras of war from Europe and Africa to the Pacific, from the World War 1 to Afghanistan.
The book is beautifully and lovingly illustrated by Kathleen O'Hagan (who I am honoured to claim as my daughter).

A beautifully touching book about the many animals who’ve helped serve in the World Wars and other battles around the world and over the years. Including the ode/poem, it touches on how each animal has contributed alongside their human counterparts (some of which still do), showing children why we remember them on 24th Feb each year, much like our ANZACS.
