The Spare Room

Rate this book
Two unexpected flatmates. One shared space. Will they cross the line into love?

Rosie had the perfect evening lined up: she'd come home early, slip into a sexy dress and surprise her boyfriend with date night. What she was not expecting was to find his bags packed and herself unceremoniously dumped.

But she can't even think about her heartbreak when she faces the more pressing matter of making rent this month. And in desperate times, she agrees to let her spare room out to her elusive upstairs neighbour.

Aled needs somewhere to stay while his place is being renovated, and she gets to keep her home. It's a win-win situation... At least in theory.

For Rosie has sworn off men indefinitely, and never saw herself living with one so soon after her breakup. But being in Aled's company day in, day out has this annoying habit of playing havoc with her heart...

On paper they're just flatmates, but could there be room for more between them?

The ultimate forced proximity, slow-burn romcom to get your hands on, perfect for fans of Beth O'Leary, Portia MacIntosh and Mhairi McFarlane.

I hated this. A LOT. 😀

The Spare Room had a premise that should have worked for me: forced proximity, flatmates-to-lovers, slow-burn romcom energy. Instead, it became one of the most frustrating reads I’ve had in a long time. 😵‍💫

The pacing was unbearable. Nothing of substance happens for ages, yet the book is stuffed with unnecessary details and conversations that go nowhere. By the time the romance was supposed to take shape, I was already mentally checked out. The story felt slow, cluttered, and directionless.

The characters were the biggest issue. Rosie came across as exaggeratedly quirky without depth, and Aled felt like a complete blank slate. There was no real chemistry—just insta-lust pretending to be connection. Their interactions were awkward rather than charming, and the “meet-cute” gave me secondhand embarrassment instead of intrigue.

What truly pushed me over the edge was how passive the FMC was. She does nothing. Plot points simply happen to her, problems magically resolve themselves, and any chance for real growth or agency is completely missed. The family conflict, which could’ve added emotional weight, is brushed aside unrealistically, as if people just change overnight.

AND HER EX?!?!?!
Such a man-child. Completely unbearable and added nothing of value to the story except irritation. Every scene involving him just made things worse, not more complex or interesting.

And don’t even get me started on the sheer number of unnecessary side characters. So many people were introduced with zero purpose, zero payoff, and zero impact. Instead of enriching the story, they cluttered it and made an already slow, messy narrative feel even more unfocused.

The writing style didn’t help. It felt stilted and overstuffed, with references and side details that added noise rather than depth. Even elements I usually don’t mind—like third-person POV—became irritating here.

I pushed through out of stubbornness, not enjoyment.

⭐ 1-star read (feeling very generous today🙂‍↕️)
Promising idea, terrible execution.
I genuinely hated this and would not recommend it.

I fell for the premise and was gifted an early christmas present of a shit execution

Maybe it was the stilted writing or the immature characters, but I was bored out of my mind with this story and I dnf-ed at 14%. I wasn't even able to read up to the forced-proximity trope which is one of my favourites.

I initially requested this for the promising premise, yet by the 10% mark, the storyline failed to even touch upon any significant plot points. It had also been compared to "The Flatshare", an incredibly popular book following a similar storyline. I was excited to read this before O'Leary's to see how it measured up compared to the original, but unfortunately, I could not get through the book.

Rosie, to me, felt very over-the-top and quirky. Aled felt very closed off in the few short moments that I read, considering he never spoke even after Rosie fell into his arms and her joke which provided me with second-hand embarrassment. Their chemistry felt forced and their 'meet-cute' ridiculous and heavy on the insta-lust.

For a contemporary romance, a lot was going on in the first 4 chapters. You learn about her friend Niamh, about Rosie's job and her co-workers, and the 2-and-a-half-page conversation she has on the phone with a male Karen who, quite frankly, makes Rosie seem bearable. You also read about a stray cat which is more interesting than all the chapters put together. There are also lots of references, which aren't always a bad thing (cough Check & Mate cough), but it made the writing feel all the more cluttered. I also didn't like the 3rd-person POV which I don't always hate, but here it made the book feel intolerable for me.

In all fairness, it probably wasn't the best book to read in a slump due to the incredibly slow-paced writing, but I wouldn't necessarily recommend it either.

Thank you to netgalley and the publisher for an arc in exchange for my honest thoughts!

I think I am in a slump for any book that isn't a re-read...

The concept of this was amazing! I was expecting a proper slow-burn forced proximity romance. This was the definition of boring. The author waffled on about nothing half the time, the characters were both boring AND annoying.

If you're going to do a forced proximity story, make sure you write the characters to have chemistry with each other.

I seriously cannot believe how I just read a romance novel with absolutely no romance.

For fans of the lighthearted, romcom genre, this one is for you guys. I read a few reviews before writing this and was shocked to find quite a few people didn’t enjoy this book as much as I did. Of course everyone is entitled to their own opinions but well, they’re wrong 🤣

This book made me giddy. The romance in this story was so adorable and the build up was written so well! I loved Rosie, I thought she was incredibly relatable. I liked that the tough moments she went through weren’t overshadowed and that they were actually spoken about. Her family, her job, her flat. I also really liked Aled! He was such a soft, shy guy with a heart of gold. I really liked his personality and how he wasn’t that classic cocky main character who thinks he’s the shit. I liked that they became friends first and foremost before pursuing a relationship. It made the romance that much better.

This is such a fast paced, easy read and written so well. The only little gripe I had with the story is that there were a couple of filler chapters that felt unnecessary but they weren’t a major issue. Also I wished we saw more of Rosie and Aled’s relationship, there just wasn’t enough!

Overall, I really enjoyed this ARC. It was funny, heartwarming and left me feeling all smiley. It was my first book by Laura but won’t be my last. Definitely an author to add to your TBR’s.

Thank you @Netgalley @laura_starkey and @emblabooks for the chance to read this ARC. Make sure you guys check out this one! Out 6th Feb!

I’m really not one for negative reviews but, gah, this book was unbearable. Basically nothing happened, the characters sucked, the dialogue was cringey and not realistic, and it took all of my will to finish it.

Spoilers incoming-
James should have broken up with Rosie in chapter one. We had to deal with his shitty attitude and emotional abuse for 40% of the book.

The book is called the “Spare Room”, but Alad didn’t even move into the spare room until the halfway point of the book. It was such a waste of time.

I barely know what any of the characters look like. We know Rosie is blonde and plus sized (seriously, it was mentioned so many times that it lost its gravity), James had ugly sneakers and Alad looked studious. That’s it.

Rosie was annoying and needs to get her shit together. It was a constant complain fest. Her boyfriend sucked, her job sucked, her family sucked, her life sucked.

The book had sooo much fluff. Meaningless dialogue and plot lines. It could have been 50% shorter and told the exact same story.

And lastly, there was absolutely no chemistry between Alad and Rosie. There was so much potential to build their story, but the author fell flat.

📚Thank you NetGalley and Laura Starkey for the ARC of Spare Room.

I liked it ok, but I didn’t love it. However, that is because I expected a romance and this felt more like women’s fiction with a HEA to me due to the very little interaction between our two love interests. To the point, I don’t know if I like Aled as a character or not because we see so little of him. We literally know his cousin better than him.

However, that being said, the characters are extremely well written, as is the story!! I absolutely loved Rosie and watching her grow as a character. My favorite character may have to be Rhianne, though. She was the glue that held a lot of the plot together. I hope she gets her own story!

Thank you NetGalley and Embla Books for the eARC!

This was such a lovely story. It made me chuckle at times and I loved the way the characters behaved with each other. The story flowed along so sweetly I finished it quickly. My thanks to Netgalley and the publishers for giving me the opportunity to read this book in return for an honest review.

This is the perfect definition of a slow burn.

I am going to be perfectly honest. I wasn’t sure if I was going to like this book. I decided to go into it with an open mind and I am so happy I did.

I think what I loved the most about this book was how relatable Rosie is. She’s a character that a lot of people can see themselves in, myself included, with the insecurities and struggles she faces. I also loved that this story wasn’t centred around her self-worth being based on another man but her realising it for herself.

Also, Aled? I love him

This was a great palate cleanser when all I've been reading lately are horrors.

Thank you to NetGalley and Embla Books for providing me with this ARC. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

I loved this book. The journey Rosie goes on throughout the story is fantastic. I found myself cheering her on at every step. I loved Aled's strong yet quiet presence throughout the book as well. Overall a very enjoyable read.

Quick read, characters were a bit underdeveloped, Rosie - happy people pleaser, Aled - private bad communicator, Rosie’s family - horrible humans, friends - all supportive. Not a lot of chemistry between the protagonists but sweet nonetheless.

" Becoming a parent isn’t about learning a new skill. It’s more like learning to be a new person – or a new version of yourself. "

Slow start of the book. Things didn’t start picking up until the 60% mark. When things started to pick up, the story was very good and the chemistry between Rosie and Aled is amazing…they are perfect for each other.

What I Liked:
- Rosie (FMC) is the sweetest, most endearing character
- The personal growth Rosie exhibits through the story
- The attractive “Nameless Neighbor” who moves into the apartment complex
- Rhianne and the other supporting characters
- All the British cultural references and the British English dialect
- Closed door, clean romance

I’ll admit, forced proximity is one of my favorite rom-com tropes, and The Spare Room delivered! I loved the slow-burn back-and-forth tension between flatmates Rosie and Aled. There was classic sexual tension (closed door) but also emotional tension that gave Rosie’s relationship more depth.

I enjoy reading rom-coms because I want the Happily Ever After. To me, the best romance stories have the predictable HEA ending but aren’t laid out so explicitly that you can predict everything that happens along the way. The Spare Room is a perfect example of this. The plot was well-developed and had me invested while I waited for Rosie’s happy ending.

I recently read The Sweetest Revenge by Lizzy Dent and couldn’t help but notice similarities. The Spare Room would be an excellent read for fans of hers or of Katherine Center, Josie Silver, and Sophie Sullivan.

Thank you, Embla Books and NetGalley, for the advanced reader copy.

okay so i don’t understand why the reviews are so mid on this one, i totally adored it ❤️‍🔥 part of it was probably it’s utterly british-ness 🤣 loved the two main characters, aled was someone i’d totally go for too (so i get you girl) and i loved rosie’s character development. good for her, because i couldn’t quite stand her inability to stand up for herself in the beginning. this was a perfectly slow romance, having you on your toes until it finally happens and giving one last perfect plot twist before it ends. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Before I put my fully fleshed out review on Instagram, here are the notes I took on my phone while reading this book:

• Rosie’s glow up 💕 we love this for our queen
• Two introverts falling in love hellooo??? And he likes books and reads poetry 😭

• Loved the descriptions of interior design that underlined the protagonists love for the topic and made me wish I lived in her flat

• Slow burn but in a way that makes you feel warmth spread slowly but steady inside until you’re completely taken in with the storyline

• Lovely to read how the feeling of familiarity between the protagonists grew, like witnessing an intimacy deepen that you’re not supposed to witness

• More romantic than sexy (closed door) but with lots of deep emotions and it’s safe to say it made me shed a tear or two

• With Rosie finding new friends and an environment that appreciated her, I felt like this embodied the "found family“ trope a little - definitely loved the girlhood moments and Rhi and Niamh

• I really liked the authors writing style and will check out more of her work
