Extreme Measures

Rate this book
Being prepared for any scenario is the trademark of any good CIA operative, and Eve Wolfe is one of the best. But when her latest mission literally explodes in her face, she wakes up labeled a traitor and—even more surprising—in the custody of elite Aegis Security operative and ex-lover Zane Archer. Although she still secretly has feelings for Zane, he’s now demanding the one thing that she can’t give the truth.

When he caught her breaking the rules years ago, Zane let Eve walk away without an explanation. Now someone has not only sabotaged Aegis but also turned an American city into a war zone, and all signs point to Eve. Zane needs answers that can come only from Eve’s still-tempting lips, and he finally has the elusive operative right where he wants her—at his mercy.

The first book in bestselling author Elisabeth Naughton’s new steamy romantic suspense series brings a spy in from the cold…and sets her heart ablaze.

Before topping multiple bestseller lists—including those of the New York Times, USA Today, and the Wall Street Journal—award winning author Elisabeth Naughton taught middle school science. A voracious reader, she soon discovered she had a knack for creating stories with a chemistry of their own. The spark turned into a flame, and Elisabeth now writes full-time.

Though primarily known for her romantic suspense work, Elisabeth has penned over thirty books and continues to write in multiple genres, including paranormal romance and contemporary romance. Her books have been translated into numerous languages and have earned several award nominations, including three prestigious RITA® nominations from Romance Writers of America. In 2017, REPRESSED, the first book in her Deadly Secrets series, won the RITA® for best romantic suspense.

Elisabeth's work has been praised by the Chicago Tribune as being filled with "deadly intrigue, high adrenaline action, and scorchingly hot passion.” Kirkus calls her "a writer talented enough at weaving a yarn to get her readers ensnared in it.” When not dreaming up new stories, Elisabeth can be found spending time with her husband and three children in their western Oregon home, wrangling two cats, or chasing after one very rambunctious Dalmatian.

I Love Elisabeth Naughton, I really do but if she writes one more book that keeps me up until 3AM, I am going to have to hunt her down and have some serious words with her (maybe take some Extreme Measures even).

Extreme Measures is book one in her fabulous new series Aegis Security Systems.. Now with Ms. Naughton's previous series the Eternal Guardians, all laced with Greek Mythology (ad Aegis sounding just a bit Greek) it would be easy to assume that this fell along those lines, don't think that, you would be wrong. It is an action packed, fast paced, intense, suspense filled piece of insanity that yes, kept me up until 3AM..

CIA agent Evie Wolff has a job to do, it's to find those in the agency that have turned. To track down the bad guys within. A difficult task but one that took her to and away from the one man she will ever love. Knowing he thinks she betrayed them both, knowing he would prefer her out of his life, Evie still can't turn her back on him. So when an op turns bad, things start blowing up and Evie is caught in the crossfire, of course Zane Archer is around to see her at her worst..

Zane Archer left the CIA, knowing it just wasn't for him. For Zane it's a black and white world and the CIA?? Well it's a world full of grey. Having turned to the Aegis Agency things might be looking up, that is until an op goes bad, the principal is dead and a mocking phone call from his past sets him off. Now he is determined to find Eve and discover just what she is up to. To take her down if she has turned bad. But when he finds her, everything is insane and nothing is like it's supposed to be. Is Evie an agent for good or bad? And honestly does it really matter? She owns his heart.

Taking the news right from the headlines and making it unique.. What a fabulous gift. Ms. Naughton makes the unreasonable, reasonable. Reminds us that the only power worth having is the power of love. She also manages to raise questions while answering others. To frustrate us, to drive us insane and eventually to make us love her wonderful characters.

The twists and turns in this story delight. A whodunit at it's best. I knew for sure, absolutely positively who the bad guy was.. at least until I turned the page. Then well, all bets were off!

I promise this series is going to ROCK and Elisabeth will have yet another winner on her hands! Start now, get in at the beginning because if you don't you will regret it!

The Romance Review

Female covert operatives are more and more popular. With shows like Alias and Covert Affairs, a strong female lead in stories is inevitable. For those who enjoy spy thrillers, this book is for you. Ms. Naughton is new to me and I'll be keeping an eye on her.

Eve Wolfe is an operative who works even covertly in the Company. She is similar to the Internal Affairs for cops. When her sister is captured during one of her ops, she goes off grid unwillingly. Her former lover, Zane Archer, is a lover scorned and demanding for answers. The two of them come to an understanding quickly when they become public enemy number one.

This story moves at a fast pace. Ms. Naughton does a good job of throwing red herrings to keep a reader guessing. The conflict in this story is trying to figure out the real traitors before Eve and Zane are killed. However, this seems to be relegated to the background and Zane tries to reconcile the Eve he knew with the one that stands before him. The romance in this story is a stronger element than the suspense. For those who are into romance over suspense this will work well for you.

The characters are well written. Eve is a strong woman who is isolated. It seems only her father knew her best. She's estranged from her sister yet still love her. Her complicated history with Zane adds a nice torn emotion when they meet up again. Eve is an imperfect character. She's made decisions she regrets which costs lives. Matching her up with a boy scout type who lives with strict rules is fun to watch. Zane's strengths are protection and his inability to be corrupted. This also handicaps Zane in some ways because he's rigid and inflexible about right and wrong. Life tends to have lines which are easily moved and erased. Watching Zane struggle with this and Eve's decisions is amusing.

Overall, this is a fast paced and smooth read. It's easy to follow the plot and the characters are admirable. It's an enjoyable page turner recommended for romantic suspense lovers.

If there was a hell, he was surely headed there. But he didn’t care. Someone needed to put a stop to her. And it looked like that someone was now him.

4.0 RATING-I’m not sure why I waited so long to read Extreme Measures by Elizabeth Naughton. I read one of the prequel novellas from this series, Sinful Surrender, and really liked it. The novella was both well written and sexy and Extreme Measures was the same. For readers that enjoy romantic suspense with a lot of intrigue, Extreme Measures should be an enjoyable read. I’ll admit that personally, I tend to gravitate to more run of them mill, guilty pleasure romantic suspense. Typical damsel in distress, stalker, woman on the run type stories. While I enjoy plot lines with CIA operatives, terrorist, and espionage, they aren’t my normal “go to” books. Still Extreme Measures was a very solid read. Elizabeth Naughton is a great writer and the more I read her, the more I like her. This series (so far) seems to be solidly written, with a well-developed storyline, characters that are well fleshed out, and a healthy dose of steam.

While the entire book was a quality read, I think I enjoyed the secondary story line revolving around Evie’s sister, Olivia, and Landon the best. I’m really looking forward to reading Lethal Consequences, book two in the Aegis Security series, when it releases later this month. Lethal Consequences will focus on Olivia and Landon.

I was jittery with anticipation when I realised that Ms Naughton was finally releasing a full novel in the Aegis Security series. The suspense, the intricate plot, the breakneck pace and the fluency of her writing have always drawn me into her works and this one isn't any different.

But the H/h disappointed me big time and that's probably why I can't be as effusive about this book as I thought I'd be. Eve and Zane do scorch the sheets very imaginatively (Naughton writes them hot!) but I was left with the feeling that sex's pretty much the only tangible connection between them. Eve's insistence on keeping secrets and running pretty much annoyed me by the time I was halfway through and Zane's inability to see past the fly on his pants wasn't very much better. The saving grace, strangely enough, was the minor 'pairing' of Miller and Olivia which instantly felt more real to me.

I also had difficulty in distinguishing and differentiating the male voices in Aegis. Thus far, Ryder, Archer and Miller are very similarly presented with no distinctive traits - as men who cuss loads, are gruff and are constantly irritated. Hopefully that'll change as more books in this series get published.

Extreme Measures is a perfect beach read!

Romantic suspense is my “go-to” genre that I tend to seek out when I want to escape. I love the pulse-pounding, adrenaline-spiking stories that cause my Kindle to sometimes overheat as the pages fly by. That’s why I was so happy to see that one of my favorite multi-genre authors, Elisabeth Naughton (Stolen, Eternal Guardians, Against All Odds series), was releasing the first novel in a new romantic suspense series, Aegis Security. There have been been several teaser novellas published previously that introduced us to members of the Aegis Security team (see: Acapulco Heat in Bodyguards In Bed, First Exposure, and Sinful Surrender), so to say that I’ve been anticipating the publication of the first full length story, Extreme Measures, is an understatement.

Naughton is a master hand at mixing hot sex scenes with stories of suspense and Extreme Measures is a good representation of this. From the beginning pages when we’re introduced to Zane Archer, an Aegis operative, and Eve Wolfe, his former CIA lover, you know that these two will be steaming up the pages. But first they have to overcome some mutual distrust, the kidnapping of Eve’s sister, traitors within the CIA, and the anger of Aegis Security founder Jake Ryder at Zane's desertion.

I have to say I enjoyed the story, but to be honest it wasn’t my absolutely favorite book by Naughton. Of the four Aegis Security stories to date, the strongest heroine title certainly belongs to Eve. In fact, it’s the need to release the inner woman that seems to be key to this relationship progressing from Eve, the consummate CIA operative, to Eve, operative and woman. In contrast, alpha hero Zane is more in tune with his touch-feely side, though driven for quite a bit of the book by his desire to revenge himself on Eve for her perceived betrayal.

I’m definitely looking forward to future books in the series and am hoping some may focus on Eve’s sister, Olivia, Aegis operative Landon Miller, Jake Ryder, and Jake’s assistant Marley Addison. It definitely seems like they’ll have stories to be told.

Extreme Measures is a great summer read. Really a perfect virtual pulse-pounding getaway to enjoy while spending an afternoon at the pool or the beach. I’d advise you to pick up the previous stories in the series to read first as not only are they fun, but some of their characters are mentioned in this story (and I’m sure future ones as well).

So if you’re looking for a great beach read, pick up Extreme Measures, a four star thriller.

Extreme Measures is the first book in the Aegis Security series by author Elisabeth Naughton. Intense and delightful, it is a thrilling and intriguing tale of CIA operative Eve Wolfe and Aegis Security agent Zane Archer which will fascinate and mesmerize readers from start to finish. While the action is fast and furious, and the suspense never-ending, there are certain implausible situations which you’ll choose to ignore only if you are a true fan of the author, or taken in by the book.

Aegis Security agent Zane Archer and CIA operative Eve Wolfe are an unlikely enemies as they are not only close to each other but lovers. Their relationship nose-dived when Zane suspected Eve of betrayal which resulted in a botched mission causing several deaths with Zane barely escaping with his life. Zane is determined to track down the person who almost sent him to his death and the trail eventually leads to Eve. When Zane finally confronts Eve with the terrible accusation, she is unable to explain herself out of the situation.

But holding Eve does not solve any problem. Aegis Security is more at risk and so is an entire town. If Eve is innocent, who is setting her up? Zane and Eve must set their egos and distrust aside and work together again to get to the bottom of the mystery. Author Elisabeth Naughton’s Extreme Measures is fast-paced and full of action and suspense. The plot twists and surprises make this an incredible ride to the very last page.

I received this book free from NetGalley from the publisher in exchange for an honest review

Elisabeth Naughton’s new book is the beginning of a new romantic-suspense series. Eve Wolfe and Zane Archer were lovers a long time ago while Eve was working undercover for the CIA. Zane quit the CIA to work for Aegis, a privately owned organization that is a lot like the CIA but with less red-tape and restrictions. They are both in love, but do not say anything because they seem to be unaware of it. It all ends when Zane catches Eve doing something illegal, and when he accuses her of treason, she claims innocence and they both leave with hard feelings.

The story picks up years later when they meet again and begin a love/hate relationship. Both Eve and Zane are accused of treason, and they must prove their innocence while trying to stay safe while keeping other innocent people from dying in place of them. There is a side story about Eve’s sister that is so enthralling, I am hoping that she will be the heroine in the next book in this series.

This story is non-stop suspense, action and suspense. Once I started this , I could not put this book down! It mesmerized me so much that I couldn’t wait to see what was going to happen next. I will be honest and say that I have never read a book by Elisabeth Naughton before. But based on the quality of the writing and plot of this book, I intend to go back and read them all!

I loved this book!

Ok!! This is my second time writing a review that disappeared!!

Elisabeth Naughton is a good writer, no matter what she writes. This one is an intro into a new series she's writing about a group of former gov't agents who have come together to form their own agency.

Eve works with the CIA, Zane used to... As former lovers with a botched past, Zane wants revenge & Eve, well, she still loves Zane. Someone is setting them both up as the bombers in downtown Seattle... Now they are on the run to find out who & to get Eve's sister back, who is being held hostage by the people responsible.

I did like this book, and it held my attention. There were points in the beginning that I got a teeny bit bored, because the jumping to conclusions & the lack of defending themselves, kind of dragged on... But I excuse this irritation, because this action packed book was stressful (on purpose), entertaining & Hot!!

A must read all series!!

ARC Review: 3.5 stars.
I don't know why I didn't enjoy this book as much I would've expected. It has all my favorite ingredients: a hot, hunky hero, a kick ass heroine, some special ops adventure, and hot romance. One of Elizabeth Naughton's strengths is her ability to make a strong emotional connection with the characters and she accomplishes that aspect of the story. However, if you were ask me three months from now, what the story is about, I'm not sure I would be able to tell you exactly. Maybe that is the problem, it feels a bit formulaic. And although I enjoyed the story, I feel like I read this before either from the author or from other romantic suspense books. Still, it is a good narrative, if not a memorable one.

Thank you to the author, publisher, and Netgalley for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.

I really enjoyed this book. The action was intense. The plot was intriguing, had a lot of suspense to it. The story also had a steamy hot romance going on between CIA operative Eve, and Aegis Security agent Zane. I've always been a sucker for a good thrilling action filled CIA book with a dash of romance. This book did not disappoint.

Here is a little sample from chapter two - The van exploded in a fireball that shot flames thirty feet into the air. Eve's body went sailing. Screams echoed around her. She hit something hard, registered a sharp stab in her skull, knew consciousness was leaving her. But before she blacked out, she saw the shops lining the street, the van, even the umbrellas outside the cafe she'd just been sitting in, all engulfed in flames. Flames that looked like they signaled the end of the world.

I did not finish this book. I stopped at 21%. I tried to keep reading but I was too bored. I love this author and have read many of her other books. This book was a huge disappointment!!

The characters had zero personality and lacked chemistry. Too much time was spent setting up the story. A lot of descriptions were used to set up the action scenes but little was given to describe their interactions. Was this even the same author??

Traitorous Accusations

CIA operative Eve Wolfe's reputation for excellent judgement and job performance is well deserved but recently her conscience has her questioning decisions that resulted in the death of innocents. But her harsh self- criticism doesn't lay blame where it belongs, which is at the doorstep of the perpetrators.

Eve's self-recrimination threatens to affect not only her work but also her relationship with Aegis Security operative and former CIA agent, Zane Archer, who is also her lover. Someone sets up Eve and Archer to take the fall for a deadly explosion on the streets of Seattle and now they're on the run. Who can they trust as they look for missing pieces of this deadly puzzle? Who is responsible? And why?

"Extreme Measures" is the first book in the Aegis series. Author Elisabeth Naughton's fast-paced, action-packed thriller should come with a warning label: "May Cause Sleep Deprivation". Your reading speed will determine how many sleepless nights you can expect to experience. At 331 pages I lost only one night so no permanent interruption in my sleep patterns. What I did though was enjoy an original plot with believable dual protagonists and secondary characters. Believable because their flaws are readily recognizable negatives that many of us are plagued with from time to time; doubts, fears, insecurities and trust and varying degrees of commitment issues.

Plot originality and character development are excellent. The writing itself is strong and kept me reading straight through. However, the writing is tainted by some grammar issues and too many aggravating typos, which are easily avoided by a competent copy editor. In my opinion, an author of Naughton's calibre deserves better but then I tend to be pickier about careless editing. Readers deserve better, even when the book is a freebie. It certainly could influence whether or not readers are willing to pay for the rest of the series. There are so many excellent books from which to choose and for me, not nearly enough time to make a dent in my ever-increasing TBR list.

As I write this I'm rethinking my rationale on cost. This is a six book series and books 1- 3 are free to Kindle Unlimited members. Books 4, 5 & 6 are $3.99 each at a total cost of only $11.97. This averages out to ~$2 each. So, my POV on the need for more careful editing still stands, even at these bargain prices. Four stars.

Thank the universe for making my path cross with Extreme Measures.

Wow, I don’t even know where to start. This was like a well made hollywood spy movie! It had a mr&mrs smith vibe. This book was the definition of romantic suspense.

The story is fast paced and boy, it appeased the need of action. Story has the perfect balance of action and hot steamy romance. Believe me when I say the romance is off the charts :) with the plot twists and action scenes, I felt like I was watching a good movie. Good thing that I was off work, because I would definitely call in sick since I couldn’t put down the book until I finished.

It also has a little side story of eve’s sister. Normally I don’t like side stories, I only want to invest in the main story and I get bored otherwise. But with this book, for the first time I was looking forward for Olivia’s chapters.

All in all, this book was waaaaaay from boring, it’s the “make you stay up all night to finish the book” kind of book. All the side characters were intriguing (especially Marley. I visualized Felicity Smoak from the series Arrow while reading and I can’t wait to read her story). It has the perfect balance of action and romance. The energy between Eve and Zane was in flames. This one goes straight to my favourites!

This was a really well-written and fast-paced and entertaining romantic suspense novel of the military/special agent type. I liked it but for some reason, I didn’t love it. I can’t quite put my finger on what was missing because the execution from the characters to the drama to the passion and the romance was fine, but it just felt a little hollow. I can recommend this in. good conscience to people who like military/paramilitary action romance, but it’s not a book I’m passionate about. “It’s fine” and “there’s nothing wrong with it” are the lasting impressions I’m left with.

Let me count the ways how much I loved this book... the Plot was fabulous. I loved both the H/H in this book. Most books have the H/H so different from each other you can’t imagine how they get along. Here we have two hard headed, determined and very opinionated people that are very much alike. It works !

I loved all the secondary characters too They had a strong presence in the story and I hope they get their own stories.

Action packed, Fast Paced... a good him and her plot... loved this book.

Tangled webs, deceit, lies, a mission goes wrong, you got the start of a new series. Passion was the game between Eve and Zane, before his mission. A few seconds after they rescued the man, everything went wrong. He blames Eve. To find out she was, or wasn’t involved in this op that ended badly. She told him, a sister Is missing she is working undercover for the CIA, he’s wanting correct answers. Nothing, was coming together, who is right or is there only a mission for both of them. Excellent plot of tension, good characters, and on to the next book.

A new series

I borrowed this book as part of my Kindle Unlimited subscription as an audio book. I’ve read several books by this author and have enjoyed them, however this one wasn’t my favourite.

Definitely one for 18 plus, a lot of explicit scenes which didn’t really add anything to the story. A good holiday read with the next book nicely set up.

I will definitely read more from this author.

Eve and Zane have a long history together but not all of that history is good. They love each other but due to circumstances, neither is sure they can trust the other with national security issues. Who can be trusted? Suddenly, Eve and Zane have to decide whom they can trust with national security and their lives. Will they figure out that working together is better than working alone? First book in quite a while - maybe ever - where I correctly figured out the actual bad guy before the reveal. Which is the reason for just 4 stars. Otherwise, it was a great read and a great setup for a series.
