Rafferty #8

Wright & Wrong

Rate this book
Bradley Wright and two friends terrorized their high school.

Rafferty watched the whole thing go down, clear as day. As open and shut as it gets.

So why does the killer’s mother want him on the case?

Rafferty couldn’t do anything but stand and watch as Bradley Wright and two friends terrorized their high school; unable do a damn thing until it was already too late.

Two of the killers are dead, Bradley’s on life-support, and if he ever wakes up the cops will be right there waiting to make sure he pays the ultimate price for the crime.

After what he witnessed, Rafferty can live with that.

So, when Bradley’s mother knocks on the office door and asks him to help prove her son’s innocence, Rafferty’s first reaction is to tell the lady to go to hell.

On the other hand, getting paid to poke around the edges of an open and shut case.

It almost sounds too easy …

How far will Rafferty go to make sure that justice is served?

Set in the 1980's this is a very clever thriller, starting off with a horrific school shooting witnessed by Rafferty, who is a PI with a rather unique approach to his job, and especially to his relationship with the police.
The story follows Rafferty as he is engaged by the parents of one of the kids accused of the shooting to prove whether or not he is guilty.
I really enjoyed that the plot was complex and had loads of twists and turns, especially the political interference, and the book was peopled by lots of fascinating characters. I also really enjoyed the period feel of the book.
I received a complimentary copy of the book, but have voluntarily written this honest review.

Rafferty is hanging out in his office, when he witnesses a Columbine style school shooting. He's helpless to do anything until he sees and pursues one of the perpetrators, who is almost immediately hit by a bus and put into a coma.

The kid's mother tries to hire Rafferty to prove the kid didn't do it, and, needing money, he agrees. There are protesters in the lady's front yard, for him to take care of, too, so he gives Cowboy and MiMi a call.

Not bad. Not nearly as much action as in some of the series.

Rule No.1: Rafferty Rules!

Rafferty and his cast of characters return in a case that is, sadly, highly relevant. Comparisons are drawn with other 'hard boiled,' PIs but to me, Rafferty stands alone. Bill Duncan hits all the right notes with his character; his rugged exterior hides a large heart, and his irreverent approach and witty comebacks are delightful. Add top-notch writing, and you have a rare treat.

It’s easy to jump to conclusions especially when you see only part of what is happening, or come in after the action has started. Today that’s going to happen to Rafferty…And the day is only going to get worse. The book has a timely plot, lots of action, and definitely lots of attitude.

A great PI story from Bill, which I enjoyed immensely. Highly recommended. Can't wait to read the next one.
