Figured if I am going to collect dog books, and especially as I used to work at Disney (Corporate), that I should have this book. Cute story book for kids like the movie except without the singing.
"A baby is nothing but a bundle of trouble," said a husky voice. Lady whirled around to see who was speaking. It was a scruffy-looking dog she had never seen before. Why, he wasn't even wearing a collar!

Jim Dear presents his wife, Darling, with a pretty box on Christmas Eve and it contains a gorgeous cocker spaniel puppy. 'I love her,' says Darling, 'She's a perfect lady!'
So Lady settles in and when she is six months old she is given a new collar and name tag. Lady is undoubtedly the princess of the household and is convinced that she is the luckiest dog in the world.
But as summer approaches the Darlings play with Lady less and less and there is talk of a baby. 'Who is this baby,' Lady asks herself. A husky voice behind her suddenly declares, 'A baby is nothing but a bundle of trouble.' Lady turns to see a scruffy looking dog that isn't even wearing a collar. He introduces himself as Tramp but Lady tells him that she never speaks to strangers. However Tramp warns her that when a baby comes along a dog moves out.
Sure enough soft, cooing sounds eventually come out of the master bedroom and Lady discovers a new baby. And when the Darlings decide to go away for a few days they introduce Aunt Sarah, who arrives with a basket out of which are staring two pairs of blue eyes.
The eyes turn out to belong to Aunt Sarah's two cats, Si and Am. And they create havoc in the house but unfortunately Lady gets the blame and is shooed out. She wanders off and, on the other side of town, is attacked by some fierce dogs but Tramp is on hand to clear them off. Not only that, he takes Lady along to his favourite restaurant's back door where some food is provided for the pair.
They become friends and that night they sleep under a full moon. The following morning they explore but Tramp chases some chickens and when the owner calls the dog pound, it is Lady that gets caught. She finds herself behind bars but with having a name tag attached she is soon returned to her home.
Aunt Sarah then chains Lady up outside and she is so sad. And when night falls she espies a large rat going into the baby's room through an open window. She tries to break free to warn the household but is unable to do so. Fortunately Tramp is on hand to take charge and he soon pounces on the rat but in doing so he damages property in the lounge. Aunt Sarah comes along and shoos them both out of the house, calls the dogcatcher and Tramp is taken away..
Later the following morning the Darlings return and discover the dead rat and realise that the two dogs have saved the day. Lady is on hand but Tramp is on his way to the pound. Jim Dear quickly takes a taxi, chases the dogcatcher and gets Tramp released.
The pair then settle down at the Darlings and before too long not only does Tramp have his own collar and name tag but he and Lady have a family of four adorable puppies ... everyone lives happily ever after ... a charming tale beautifully illustrated in the typical Walt Disney style.

I love this story and liked the way it was told in this condensed children’s book. My only issue with this original story is with the Siamese cats and how the stereotypes used with them aren’t racially or culturally sensitive.

April 24, 2024I found the choice of having the male pups strongly take after the father, and the female pups strongly take after the mother, rather than have the children be a blend of the distinct breeds, quite amusing.

Almost anything by Disney is a great children’s story and this is another classic that I recommend.

It's honestly really funny to compare the actual contents of children's books to your childhood memories of them.
This is a perfectly ordinary condensed retelling of the cartoon, hitting enough of the big points (Lady, the baby, the Tramp, the muzzle, the fire, a new family structure) to make it feel like a complete story. Kids' imaginations really do flesh out the rest. I've seen the movie, too, of course, but I specifically remember there being a lot more to this book - probably a mix of the movie, the book, and my own imagination weaving a much longer and more exciting story.
It's a cute book, but there's not a lot of substance, and the art isn't outstanding enough to want to keep it. And clearly my mental pictures were a lot more vivid than the real thing, anyway.

May 6, 2009this is a good book. i read it when i was real little. i like this book a lot beacuse it is about a dog with a man and his wife then along came a baby and then the dog "Lady" got jealus beacause their was hardly any attention on her anymore.

We had just watched the movie so Grif picked this book out...we also had just got our new dog Carson at that point...all things were dog then.
