And it was, in fact, THAT good (4.5 because I'm a stickler, and they are still men who do stupid shit 🙄 but deserves the round up)

The story starts off with Gray getting out of prison. Where is he popular simply for his amazing personality and charisma (not sarcasm lol). From the get you can see how he gives 0 fucks and that he really cares about people.
Loved Gray from the beginning.

Chosen family aspect (always love this) because of his shitty parents, especially his dad.
Dandelion :) LOVE MARTA!

Then we eventually learn about Ryder, which was really because Gray can not control himself lol
A lot happened off the page, which worked because for them to build a bond within a 171 pages would have been a flex, but it worked. It made sense.

Learning Ryders' story (or some of it) was really sad. Ryder is an empath, and Gray can control air and earth in terms of elements besides them being hunters.
There is a sniper scene, and boy, oh boy, was that good.

If you like Supernatural (in a general sense, because these guys are DEFINITELY not brothers lol) you will definitely like this.

On to the next!

MF Scene (not cheating one of the MCs hooks up with other people before they get together)
Mention of abuse
Murder (really self-defense) and mentions of multiple murder (flashback)
Prep Kings!
Bi or Pan representation
Dual POV
Good Boy and Sir
Demons, Hellhounds, and possible Vamps OH MY 🤣

I didn't know how much I've missed Gray and Ryder till now 😭😭😭😭😭 I love both of them so much🥰

Im not a super fan of the flashback memories, especially when it comes to something as important as when the couple first meets, which is why I'm so glad the author gave us an entire book for that. Definitely met under circumstances that I never would have guessed. Already had a soft spot for Ryder but now I just want to give him a big hug and not let go.

I absolutely loved that they had an emotional connection between getting physical. They actually got to talk (sigh) a lot and get to know each other. My favorite thing is how they felt a connection to each instantly that they couldn't stay away from each other. They understood each other perfectly.

❤"Something—everything—about Ryder had weaseled its way into every part of me."❤

We got some demon fighting action, got to learn about their family and history and most importantly we got to see how Gray became obsessed with twizzlers. We got to go back to the very beginning and it was lovely seeing reading their journey and slowly falling for one another. Also I'm definitely more curious about Grays sister, she seems like a bad@$s and would love to see her in another book!!

Another perfect book by A Winchester! When I tell you I loved every minute of this, I truly freaking did. Getting Gray and Ryder’s back story was EVERYTHING. Watching these two fall in love and how they handled each other was AMAZING.

Listen, the SMUT… is smutting lol but it was much more than that. I loved that we got a little bit more back story on the hunters. I loved getting the full backstory on Ryder and Gray. My heart BROKE for them both in different ways, and I just feel like they’re perfect for one another.

Truly an opposites attract scenario but they bring out the best in one another. This book was less hunting and more back story, but it is well worth it. If you’re a nosy reader like me then you like allllll the details. I’m sure we’ll learn more along the way and I am READY.

Seriously, I don’t like the show supernatural or arrow nor do I care for superhero stories but this series has me HOOKED. Onto book 3!!

Im so obsessed with Gray it's probably unhealthy, but I just dont caaaaare. I am absolutely feral for Gray, he is sunshine, badass, and delicious all wrapped up in one. Dont get me wrong Ryder is amazing too, but it's Grey for meeeee.

This is their origin story and absolutely loved every minute of it. But first...Gray and his fucking obsession with Shake it off lol but no one will rain on his thunder as they shouldn't. Gray is a total badass and takes care of his no matter what. His determination to save Ryder, and then his unique way to help Ryder is top tier. Ryder can do no wrong in Gray's eyes. Here we learn what happened to Ryder and what he went through to get to the Ryder that was in book one, and it's definitely because of Gray.

Love these two men; I am a devoted follower. And A. Winchester never misses. Ever.

Oh my this book!!! Gray and Ryder already had a place in my heart but this book solidified them into my mind as well.

This novella, as it states in the title, takes it back to the beginning and sheds light on who the boys were before they met and how their talking through a wall turned into so much more.

Gray is your east going, charmin', as he refers to himself...a lot...man who's just been released from prison and heads to a Hunter's safe house. This man is a character. I laughed throughout this book at his antics and his ability to let things roll off of him. He's typically loved by all and has a knack for getting into or causing chaos.

Ryder was an unexpected find but throughout weeks of talking to him through a wall their bond grew and eventually evolved into a beautifully written story of two demon hunters who find something in each other neither knew they needed or wanted.

A. Winchester did it again with this book. I was hooked in the first paragraph, laughing multiple times! The way the story is written you can feel the raw emotions and see how these two men became such strong foundations for each other. I can't wait to read more about these two. The spice is 5/5. Check the trigger and content warnings because there's a few topics that are touched on but not thoroughly written out regarding time in the military and problems controlling powers.

This series is a must read!!! Anxiously awaiting the next book on these men!!!

The Wayward Sons: Back to the Beginning is the second book in A. Winchester's The Wayward Sons series. It takes place approximately eight (if I'm remembering correctly) years before The Wayward Sons and the Wichita Werewolf. Here's what you can expect from Ryder and Gray:

💚 MM paranormal romance and adventure
💚 First person dual point of view
💚 Guaranteed happily for now (the series continues with the characters embarking on different adventures)
💚 Bisexual representation
💚 Demon hunting
💚 Open door spice
💚 Lots of banter
💚 Prison break
💚 Novella

Ensure you review the content and trigger warnings to decide if this book is right for you. Note that this list of warnings may be incomplete. Please take care of yourself while reading.

I love Ryder and Gray so much, it was great to go back to their origin story and how they met! I wasn't expecting Ryder's backstory to be so painful, but it just made me love him more. It also gives us more insight into why Gray is so protective of him, which I just think is beautiful. Similarly to the first story, this was relatively short, and it was steamy and action-packed. Gray and Ryder are just so sensual with one another, I loved it. I like that not much world-building is required, and the author takes the opportunity at the beginning of the book to explain the archangel lineage. There are quite a few different powers, but it's not critical to remember as different elements are explained as the story progresses.

This adventure definitely had me on the edge of my seat, but the author does a great job at balancing the demon hunting adrenaline with sweet and hilarious moments between Ryder and Gray. We learn the meaning behind Gray's tattoo, and how he came to consume so many Twizzlers. Him buying a map at the end of the story was adorable, and I can't wait to go along for the ride as they check more locations off the map.

If you're looking for something fun and paranormal but with lots of caretaking and steam, you won't want to miss these two's wild adventures.

Spice: 🌶️🌶️🌶️/5

This was one of the few times that I decided NOT to read a series in the order in which it came out 😮 this novella is the origin story of Grayson Harper and Ryder Collins before they were a team, and I loved the banter, shenanigans and steamy moments with a supernatural twist!

🖤MM Bisexual Romance
🖤Grumpy x Sunshine
🖤Demon Hunting & Superpowers
🖤A Sunshine Guy with a Massive Dose of “Touch Him & 💀” Vibes
🖤A Tørtürëd Soul with One Hell of a Dry Sense of Sarcasm
🖤 “I’ve got you, baby”

Grayson Harper is out of prison and the only thing he wants to do is hit the road and fight demons. Life is uncomplicated this way, and it’s what he’s good at: making the world a better place the best way he knows how.

When Gray takes a break in Seattle, he finds himself trying to solve the mysteries surrounding a man named Ryder…a man he’s never seen before and is in some sort of magical prison. What starts as secret, late-night meet-ups, quickly blossoms into something more–a bond that neither can deny. As Ryder’s past is brought to light, Grayson has a choice to make: risk everything for a man he barely knows but makes him feel in ways no other person has before, or walk away before he gets hurt…

I ADORED getting to know Grayson and Ryder–this duo gave me those warm fuzzy feelings and had me saying “aw,” from the moment they found each other. I loved the pull these two felt for one another and the grumpy x sunshine dynamic made for the best banter. Gray’s protective nature over Ryder was so heartwarming, and Ryder’s vulnerability to let Gray in was touching. And when these two admitted they felt something for one another? Let’s just say, I was happy they decided to cross those lines and road-trip together 🤭

If you’re looking for Sam & Dean Winchester vibes with spice? Start this series!

“I’m the only sweet thing you need, got it.”

Grayson Harper has been caged since seventeen. Wrong place, wrong time, he didn’t do the crime, but he served the time. His ex, long gone. His father, A hunter who taught pain before skill. The only family that mattered was Marta, the housekeeper who raised him when “training” got too rough. Now, with his sentence cut short thanks to his elemental power, quick wit, and dangerously good charm. Gray is free, no plan, no destination. Just the open road and a hunt to chase. A hunter house offers him a bed and hot meals. One rule: stay away from the greenhouse. Sure. Like Gray listens to rules. No door, no way in, but a voice. A man inside, and once Gray finds Ryder, he keeps coming back.

Ryder Collins hasn’t always been trapped in an impenetrable glass cage. Once, he walked free, well, as free as an empath could be. But drowning in the weight of other people’s emotions drove him to the Army. It worked…until it didn’t. Then one moment of uncontrolled power stole his freedom, a loved one and his identity. Leaving him alone, paying for a crime he did commit. Until Gray. Until the relentless, sunshine man who talks like they’ve known each other forever. Until he starts to feel hope.

The plan? Break Ryder out.
The risk? Everything.
The odds? Laughable.
But if anyone can burn through the impossible, it’s Gray Harper.

Plot: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Spice: 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️

AWin, the magic in this book isn’t loud, it’s sharp, quiet, and deadly in all the right ways. Gray and Ryder aren’t just characters, they’re a storm you want to get caught in. And after this? I’m all in for wherever their journey leads.

This was everything I wanted and more! I was so curious about Ryder and Grays origin story and it did not disappoint.

First of all, Gray is still seriously one of my favorite characters ever written. This man just completely owns prison, walks out, gets fucked, gets a million dollars cash, tells his asshole father to kick rocks, and gives half of the money to his families maid. What. A. Legend!! He makes me so happy and he’s such a happy so lucky fucker lol. He has an amazing way of being an honest asshole but with a smile and it’s amazing.

This was 100000% not the way we were going to meet Ryder but I was so here for it. Bring held prisoner, in his own families backyard nonetheless, you can tell he has sincerely given up (as one would). But as soon as Gray forces his way past those walls, you just see Ryder opening up and it’s beautiful. This man has a past and his guilt is sewn deep into his bones but these two are just so perfect for each other. Every scene in the greenhouse had me wrecked with emotions. To have someone’s soul literally calling out for you is everything!

I enjoyed that there wasn’t too much of a fight between these two about being together. It was the perfect amount and the slow burn was amazing for them and their story. I loved it and I’m excited for their next adventure!

4.5 ⭐️

Last weekend I saw a friend post about this series, I read the synopsis and I couldn’t believe I hadn’t come across this series yet! I went through a whole Supernatural era- attended two conventions, met the guys, watched it right up to the end- so when I stumbled upon this I said SIGN 👏 ME 👏 UP! I’m not even sure I can pick a favorite here ( might have to wait until the end of the series to decide), I loved Gray right from the first page, loved his attitude, his vibe everything. Ryder was a little mysterious for a bit but then bam he’s a sniper and f*cking SWOON 🫠🫠😍 I’m such a sucker for that I can’t even tell you why it’s just 🔥😮‍💨. Sometimes I have a hard time with novellas that aren’t interconnected with a series with people I already know, I love seeing all the interactions and how their connection formed, which is impossible in a novella, there’s just not enough time. Would I have loved a bit more? Absolutely but @ did it in a way that satisfied my need for that connection without actually giving it to me, which takes skill. 😂. I loved the paranormal aspects here and the abilities these hunters have and I so look working to see what adventures they’re two go on

📚: Wayward Sons: Back to the Beginning
By: A. Winchester

Tropes:
👉 MF & MM Spice
👉 Grumpy/Sunshine
👉 Demon Hunters

TWs 😟: Main character held hostage, violence

Main Takeaway 🏹: Amazing origin story

Synopsis 📜: Grey is out of prison and trying to find a purpose when he stumbles upon a man trapped in a greenhouse with no way in or out. He spends his time getting to know Ryder, and they both fall hard and fast. With the help of Ryder’s sister, Grey does everything he can to rescue Ryder from his prison and actually meet the man he has fallen for in person.

Personal Thoughts 🤔: I loved getting to go back to the origin story of Ryder and Grey after already having a sense of their relationship dynamic. It made me appreciate them both as individual characters all the more. And seeing how the twizzlers fixation came to be was hilarious and perfect!

Recommendation ✔️❌: Absolutely, everyone who likes these tropes should read this book!

*I received an advanced copy for review.

Look, I saw the cover and...say less. If you're looking at the cover, you get the vibes.

Anyway, this is an MM adventure romance novella. Gray is a demon hunter with elemental magic over the earth and the air, and after he's released from prison, he discovers Ryder, a man trapped in a greenhouse. Gray decides to release him and all hell breaks loose.

This was a fun read, and it definitely fits the tone set by the cover! IYKYK. If you're an SPN fan, or a Dean girlie (or Dean dude) you'll like this!

My one caveat is that Gray's accent is...very, very prominent. If you don't like reading vernacular or find it distracting, particularly when it's of the Southern/Texas variety, you're going to struggle with this.

Thanks to A. Winchester for the advanced copy, this is my own opinion.

This was a ARC that was given to me by the author and I have no regrets about it. A. Winchester may have written this as a novella. but wow, it just took me for a roller coaster ride! If you want a book that will rock your world in a short amount of time and leave you wanting more, then this is the one.
Sorry trying not to write any spoilers here lol. The projected release date for Amazon is March 12th, so get ready to join us in this torment lmao!
Please be aware that of the following:
**The Wayward Sons is a MM bi-sexual romance novella full of road-trip shenanigans, steamy moments, and a whole lot of supernatural twists. Not suitable for readers under 18 years of age**

Another thrilling, exciting, heat filled adventure! I was really looking forward to seeing a little into Gray & Ryder’s back story and I was certainly not disappointed.
Getting to know Gray first leading up to and as he begins his demon hunting life and allowing us to meet his family was a brilliant insight into his character. We get to know the man he was and some of the reasons he grows into the man we meet in the first book - the Wichita Werewolf.
But then the surprising circumstances of how he meets Ryder and the heart wrenching backstory of his was beautiful.
The first book allowed us to fall in love with the characters and this one helps us understand who they are. It was beautiful, well written with wonderful imagery, emotion & perfectly executed steam. I enjoyed it immensely.

I really enjoyed Witchita Werewolf and how Gray and Ryder were already a well established couple and knew who they were. There was no relationship drama or anything like that which was a nice break from a lot of the angsty stuff I tend to read but the whole time I was secretly wishing I knew how they became well..them.. if there ever was any drama or what-have-you at the start. Well this book answers a lot that for me by giving us their start .. and what a start it is. Gray is still (or was always) a giant ball of sunshine and Ryder was (or is still -however you want to look at it) slightly reserved but soft for his man. I enjoyed meeting Ryder's family and I can't wait to see more of his brother and sister in the future as well as see them go on some more epic hunts like in WW.

My Heart Now Belongs To Hunters!!!

It’s official, hunters have stolen my heart!!! Book one sold me on Grayson and book two sealed the deal for Ryder. As if these two weren’t already swoon worthy this book made me fall even deeper.

It was so good to go back to how it all began with these two love birds and let me tell you it was a hot ride. The dynamic between these two is unmatched. I don’t really know what I was expecting from their back story but I do know that it had me shook and I loved every second of it. If you have not yet met my future husbands (yes the wedding planning is in the works lol) then…. 1) what are you waiting for? 2) get a move on it! And 3) why are you still here reading? GO….NOW!!!

If you read the other Wayward Sons book and have always wondered how Gray and Ryder teamed up this is the book for you. This book is dual pov but the first part of the book is primarily Gray and boy will he keep you laughing throughout the entire book. I highly recommend this series, and now that this book is here read this one first. Here are two quotes I loved out of many that I saved.

I’d bet my left nut on it—scratch that. It wasn’t worth my left nut. Or my right one. My boys would stay right where they were.

Well, news flash, I was a red-button man. If you told me not to press the red f*cking button, I was pressing the red f*cking button.

Can't wait for their next book.

All stories have a beginning, and this is the one of Gray and Ryder.

It's really hard to keep a straight face while reading this book, believe me. For nearly all of the novella, I giggled, squealed, and smiled. Their first meeting was unexpected. I didn’t see it coming, and the mystery that led to it kept my attention the all time. I will never stop saying that the author's writing is phenomenal. I'm completely obsessed. She also starts the book with a brief guide on the power. You don't have to go back to a previous book.

Gray is a child half the time and I’m not surprised the book starts with him coming out of prison with full confidence. His confidence is quite high. He is a red-button person. Avoid giving him an interdiction if you don't want to pique his curiosity. 😂 Ryder is more near his emotions with his power and loved it. When his dominant side comes out, damn…🫠 This book shows more of his dark past. It was interesting to read.

One of my favorite scenes is the dandelion story. 🥹

You will find in this book:

⚣MM/FM spicy scenes
🎆Both fall hard & Fast
☀️Grumpy/sunshine
😈Demon Hunters
⛑️Rescue mission
💬Snark & Sass
🥺Hurt/Comfort
✌️Dual POV
🌶️Spice

The wayward sons are back with this super quick novella, that takes you on a rollercoaster ride. That you just don't want to put down once you start. I ate it up in one sitting.

We get to know gray more in this book, taking us on a journey to how he became a demon hunter and how he met and fell In love with Ryder. Seeing a bit of his family too.

Book one we get to know the characters and fall on love with them, but this goes into more detail about the boys. Which just makes you fall harder for them.

It's action packed with just the right amount of action, drama ,spice and more. It was just beautiful to read. I can't wait to see what the boys get upto next. Highly recommend

Just when I thought I couldn't possibly love these two any more! The story of how these two met could not be more perfect! Finding out what makes them who they are has only made them so much more loveable and this story proves that you just need the right person on your side to love you and see you through the tough times. This has been my favorite read of 2024. The story is so well written, the characters are amazing, it has action, it has spice and it's got the feels! It's the ultimate package rolled into a novella. I can't wait to read more about Ryder and Gray!

I am so glad we get to see where Ryder and Grey started. These two stole everyone’s hearts in the first book and I know I’m not the only one that had so many questions about how they ended up traveling the road together. And now the twizzler question has finally been answered! My heart just broke for what was done to Ryder but I love knowing that he has someone like Grey in his life. This book was spicy, full of action, and exactly what you need if you’re a fan of supernatural. I can’t wait to find out where the next book takes us!

This is the origin story I didn’t know I needed. I’ll read anything A Winchester writes so I didn’t even bother to read the book description before I dived in. Gray and Ryder’s meet-cute is so original and unexpected and their personalities are what keeps me coming back for more of their adventures. I hope we get to read more of how their relationship built up to the point where we originally met them in the Wayward Sons and the Wichita Werewolf and maybe some more interactions with Ryder’s siblings!

I love Gray and Ryder

Gray gets out of jail and Texas as fast as he can, and starts killing demons. When he stops to rest he meets Ryder who is in a greenhouse with no way out. They talk and get to know each other. Can Gray get Ryder out and keep him safe ? Great characters and storyline Highly recommended Amazing book. I absolutely love Gray and Ryder and their dynamic and character development. I totally enjoyed the beginning of their journey. Great supporting characters. I love the sarcastic humor and the spice is so good. I can’t wait for more.

I’m a sucker for a backstory and reading how Gray and Ryder met was *chefs kiss*

“Darlin’, I’m charmin’.”

Hell yes you are Gray lol he is literally sunshine and such a goof you can’t help but smile and laugh at his antics. Being a goofball doesn’t mean he can’t be serious and when he is it’s with his whole being. When he finds Ryder locked away and talking with him he decides he’s a good person and he’s the one who’s gonna free him.

Learning about who they were and how they start out to get to where they were in book one was satisfying and I had to immediately jump into the next book!

I love Gray and Ryder so much! They are the best balance for each other. Gray’s Southern charm and sunshine smile is the perfect match for ryder’s brooding, introverted self. They are so hot and so much fun. Getting to see how their journey began is such a treat. The vulnerability they each show no one else but each other is so honest. They lean on each other and aren’t afraid to show it. The representation of men’s mental health is second to none. They embrace each other, flaws and all.

This was so wholesome. Gray is fresh out of prison and looking to start his life over again. Little did he know that his new start would be meeting a man who is trapped and he hasn’t even seen. This tale of new love and beginnings is just amazing. There’s so much love in just a little over 100 pages. If you love short and wholesome reads this is definitely for you! This series is my first bisexual romance experience and these two men are the cutest!! If you enjoy grumpy x sunshine tropes then this is def for you!! Be on the lookout for its release in March 🩵
