I’m an author, editor, and speaker living in Vancouver, BC, near the sea. When I’m not writing or editing, I’m teaching creative writing workshops.

I have my Masters of Children's Literature from the University of British Columbia.

This leveled reader is for the very youngest kids who have an extremely limited reading vocabulary and are first learning to sound out words. I picked it up immediately because I am a huge fan of this author's talent to reach her target audience. While I think the text had some confusing aspects, attempting to make a play on words, I still think once the child understands the use of the words "spot" and "dot" in this context to mean the hole in the doughnut, they will love the characters and story as much as I did. The illustrations are absolutely charming and I love how the book challenges the reader to glean more than grammar by introducing storytelling elements like plot and suspense. Many early readers are simply a series of events. This one has a bit more. A brilliant new series!

Admittedly, if this was a picture book, rather than an early reader, I would probably give this 3 or 3 1/2 stars, but for an easy reader, it's really cute and engaging.

For a "first reader" I feel like it actually has a pretty high word count, but a whole lot of those words are repeating and a lot of them are also in the same word family/sound the same. A clever way the author helps to limit the unique words is to use "dot" as a name/proper noun (Dot is the name of the ladybug) and just a noun ("Is that a dot in the doghouse?"). The same is true of Spot/spot.

Overall, I'm glad to have another cute little series (so far just two books) to recommend to beginning readers.

Simple rhyming text is used in the early reader book to solve the mystery of the missing spot in Spots the dog’s doughnut.

Illustrations are clear and do not distract from the text. A good example of homophones with hole and whole being the example.

Optional purchase for any library serving children in grades K-2nd.

This book is sweet, no pun intended. I don't think I've ever seen a book end like this for younger readers. I was surprised and yet not because I thought my guess was right, and it was. I was more surprised that it ended the way it did with the "missing" dot.

Sweet and simple early reader book, with a simple mystery for kids to solve. I like Dot the Ladybug, and this is a cute follow-up to the first book.
