Nobody loves a wager more than Larson Hayes, a former playboy turned business owner with emerald eyes, a killer smile, and a love for extreme water sports, particularly racing the rapids. Ever since his fiance left him at the altar, Larson has avoided serious relationships, choosing instead to play the field and live up to his reputation as a ladies’ man. But Larson cannot resist the thrill of an impossible wager.
Nell is a young widow who’s been mourning the loss of her husband for the past four years. Larson meets Nell for the first time at the lake where Max’s friends have gathered for a pre-wedding afternoon of fun and games. A flame ignites after Larson challenges Nell to a kayak race across the lake, unaware that she is a three-time national champion in the sport of kayak racing. As the attraction between Larson and Nell grows, the two bond through a mutual love for kayaking. Their budding relationship meets with resistance, however, when Nell’s three fiercest protectors join forces to keep her from falling victim to Larson’s infamous charm.
This is a laugh-out-loud sweet romance with swoony kisses, feel-good chemistry, and the zany antics of four male friends who find pleasure in making ridiculous wagers and tormenting each other. At the same time, the story will tug at your heartstrings, as Nell deals with the anxiety and guilt of moving on after her husband’s death.
Can Nell trust her heart to a shameless flirt with a history of casual dating and a reputation for avoiding commitment? Can Larson prove to himself and others that he is worthy of Nell’s trust? Does their budding romance have what it takes to win the ultimate wager?
I am a mother of four adult children, stepmom to five adult children, and grandma to 20 grandchildren. I LOVE Coke Zero (seriously LOVE it!) and peanut M&M's. I spent five years as a single mom when my children were all very young.
That was then. This is now. I have been married to the love of my life since 2002, I have a BS in Liberal Studies, a teaching license, and an MS in Education and Administration. In 2016, Ron and I relocated to Utah, where I am continuing my 25+ years in education. I have taught high school, elementary school, and middle school; and believe it or not, I am most at home with those crazy, insane middle schoolers! Tweens and Teens! Would someone give me an "Amen" please?
Recently, I have begun a new romantic comedy series, and who knew I would love writing in this genre so much?
Besides my day job, I am also a classically trained pianist. Music is a huge part of who I am and how I express some of my deepest emotions. I also enjoy kayaking, taking long walks, and hanging out with my children and grandchildren.
I write in order to connect with others--soul to soul, heart to heart. I listen to and perform music in order to connect with and ignite creative energy. I like to put it this way:
Music puts me in touch with my emotions. Words, put my emotions in touch with my readers.
n book one of An Unlikely Romance, I get to combine my enjoyment of kayaking with my addiction to romance. I hope you will love reading the series as much as I love writing it.
Larson’s Wager by Melinda R. Morgan is a contemporary romance about unexpected connection, healing from heartbreak, and the joy that can bloom when two very different people take a risk on love. Nell Belmont, a young widow still tender from the loss of her husband, meets Larson Hayes, a once‑playboy business owner whose reputation for casual flings precedes him, at a lakeside gathering where a playful wager and a kayak race set the stage for more than friendly competition. As their attraction grows into something deeper, they must navigate trust, past hurts, and what it truly means to open your heart again.
What stayed with me most was how Morgan balances light humor and heartfelt emotion with grace and warmth. Nell’s quiet strength and her journey toward rediscovering joy made me feel deeply rooted in her story, while Larson’s evolution from flirtatious charmer to someone who genuinely listens and cares brought a smile to my face again and again.
Their shared love of kayaking didn’t just add fun, it became a lovely metaphor for learning to steer through emotional currents with courage, patience, and laughter. The chemistry between them felt sweet and hopeful, and the moments of genuine vulnerability resonated in a way that made me care about their future together. Larson’s Wager is the kind of romance that leaves your heart feeling light and uplifted, celebrating connection and growth rather than perfection.
Rating: 4 out of 5 stars. I chose this rating because it is a sincerely engaging love story with characters who felt real and lovable.
"Falling in love can happen in an instant, Larson. But learning how to love someone and how to receive love in return? That part takes a lifetime."
This was my first book by Melinda Morgan and I really enjoyed it! It’s a super cute story where both main characters find love for a second time.
After being jilted at the altar by his fiancée, Larson has no interest in any serious relationships, and afterwards gains a well-deserved reputation for being a player.
Nell is a widow who also has no interest in a serious relationship. When she moves back home, her protective brother and former brother-in-law warn Larsen to stay away from her. They also let Nell know about his reputation, but there’s a strong connection between the two of them from the very beginning.
Things I loved: Soul mates Opening your heart Character growth arc Two truths and a lie Fun banter Kayaking & rafting Jealous Larson The wagers Epilogue
I really liked Nell and Larson and their story. It’s lighthearted in some ways, but also deals with some heavy topics.
The author’s writing style was engaging. She did a great job creating likable characters — ones that have dealt with difficult situations and that you can’t help but cheer for. The plot is well-paced with just the right balance of conflict, humor, and romance. It really was a lovely and heartwarming story.
"Remember that saying, ‘There's no growth in the comfort zone, and there's no comfort in the growth zone.’ If you're uncomfortable, you might just be heading in the right direction.”
this was such a cutie read! i really enjoyed it. the characters were really easy to love, even if the guys were a bit immature at times and they all openly flirted with each other. overall this book was super cute and i would definitely recommend! 🩵
*i received a copy from the author however all thoughts and opinions are my own :)
Larson and Nell’s story was so sweet and fun to read ❤️. The two meet when they are both in the wedding party for Nell’s brother, and neither thinks they want a relationship.
Larson is figuring out as he gets older his meaningless hookups are no longer fulfilling, but has difficulty shedding his playboy image. I really enjoyed reading his perspective and how honest he was about his image and how he wanted to change it. He was so patient with Nell while she was navigating her feelings which I loved.
Nell is a young widow who has been mourning the loss of her husband for four years, realizing she is ready to move on. Nell saw past Larson’s playboy image and knew he was a good person. She recognized he was using surface level relationships to avoid being hurt. I like how she chose to trust him and the actions he showed rather than what people said about him.
The character development throughout the book, their chemistry, and the banter was great. I loved all of the side characters and strong friendships they had. Also, I love books that have text convos in them 🥰. I can’t wait for the next book in the series!! 😍
*Thank you Melinda R. Morgan for a copy of the book. All opinions are my own and voluntarily given.
I received a copy of this ebook from the author and here's my honest review.
I really enjoyed this sweet, second-chance romance between Larson and Nell. Nell returns home for her brother Max's wedding after being away for several years. Larson is a fancy-free, flirtatious ladies' man who is instantly attracted to Nell, his friend's sister. Nell is also keen but she's only just learning to live again after losing her husband to illness a few years previously. There's a bit of drama in the lead up to the wedding (do weddings EVER go to plan??), and a few misunderstandings along the way. I must confess there were a few times I found the behaviour of the guys in the story a little immature however overall this heartwarming and light-heated story of finding love again was an easy and fun read. It also touched gently on the theme of finding love again - a theme l always enjoy because everyone deserves a second chance ❤️
a book featuring loss and learning to grow from it and becoming your own person. larsons wager is a story filled with banter and adventures on the water.
nell and larson are a great couple and i loved the fact that they both learned and grew while together. larson learned he wanted to settle down with someone, and that someone was nell. nell learned that she CAN move on from her loss and she can do it on her own, not have everyone protecting her.
if you enjoy flirting, from everyone, you'll enjoy this story. there was lots of flirting between all the friends but it seemed that they all just needed to meet their own nell, like larson did.
i'm excited to read alex and bree's story next as well as liam's story.
✨i was given this book in exchange for an honest review. all thoughts and opinions are happily my own✨
Wagers upon wagers and so much more. Larson and Nell each have a history of different pains when it comes to the loss of a relationship. Both have decided to keep the opposite sex at a casual distance. Larson as a ladies man and Nell has a 2 date rule.
They meet because Nell’s brother (also Larson’s best friend) is marrying Larson’s cousin. The group of friends is doing a big kayaking race prior to wedding festivities. Nell and Larson’s friendship starts with a wager that continues to evolves throughout the book. They had to learn where they needed to grow, face insecurities, and prove they can trust each other.
There are a lot of really good elements in this book and I definitely recommend it!
This was perfection. Literally. This pair complemented each other so well. From getting to see each of their competitive sides to the cute dates.
Not only is this a great love story where Nell had gone through an experience that was very traumatic for her, and we saw her light come back, but we also got to see Larson's playboy persona drop.
The banter between all of them was amazing to see their friendship, but also how protective they all was of Nell.
I will definitely be recommending and reading this again.
This is a cute romantic book - easy read and so fun to feel all the feels of romance and love. You can really understand the characters and what they are going through in this fun story! So refreshing!
Loved this one! I loved Larson & Nell together-how she saw the good in him and how they were just meant to be together🤍. The wagers throughout the friend group were so much fun!
Larson’s Wager is a very cute and easy romance read, about risk, love, and personal growth. There are complexities of human emotions which make the characters relatable.
A blend of emotional depth, self-development, as well as light-hearted moments which I loved and enjoyed.
This is for anyone who enjoys stories about romance, taking risks, and having the courage to believe in something and fighting for it.
Absolutely loved this book! It hooks you in from the beginning and is hard to put down. I found myself wanting to constantly read it. It’s not a slow paced book which I appreciated it. Overall a really cute love story and am super excited for when the next several books are released.
The grief is so heavy in the beginning. But it lightens up by chapter three. Absolutely ever milestone in the relationship was hard earned, on both sides. This story is an amazing tale of learning to love.
This is a fun rom-com! I don't usually read rom-coms, but this one is lighthearted, funny, and entertaining. I love that there are several characters that you grow to care for, and I can't wait for the other stories to come out! Add this author to your list of must reads!
This book was light and fun with just the right amount of romance. While it followed the typical out line of a rom com, there were elements of the story not usually found in other books. I enjoyed the aspect of kayaking and rafting being a big part of the story. Reading about the competitions was quite interesting. And gave the book a hint of suspense. While the book had a great and happy ending, I am always a little sad when I come to the end. I feel like I have gotten to know the characters as friends and want to keep reading about their stories! The book was no different! I’m looking forward to reading more about the other characters as the author completes more books! Disclaimer: I received a free copy of this book to review.
4.5 stars This book had so many surprises for me in the best way! I went in expecting it to be a light and fun read and while it was that, it also had depth and realness that I loved!
I love the romance between Nell and Larson in this book. i love how they help each other out with their problems of the past. Such a cute story and i highly recommend it!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Genre: romcom Content: 🔥makeouts, mentions of hooking up, one non-descriptive scene where a side character removes her own clothes
This was my first book by Melinda R. Morgan and I’m looking forward to the next one already!
Larson has historically been a promiscuous man, after being jilted at the altar by his fiancée. His reputation precedes him in the case of Nell. Nell’s brother and her former brother-in-law are extremely protective of her since she lost her husband 4 years ago. They warn Larson to stay away from Nell and warn Nell about Larson’s wiles. But there’s a connection between from the very beginning.
Things That Were Fun: -two truths and a lie -Larson experiencing jealousy for the first time -kayaking and rafting -their text conversations -all the wagers
Quotes That Stuck Out: ✨ "Remember that saying, ‘There's no growth in the comfort zone, and there's no comfort in the growth zone.’ If you're uncomfortable, you might just be heading in the right direction.”
😏 "You're going to pay for that." She lifts her fingers to my side and gives my ribs a single poke. I drop my mouth close to her ear, and matching her saucy tone, I say, "Believe me, Nell, I look forward to it."
😍 "I don't want to be someone you run away from, Nell. I want you to feel safe with me."
❤️ It's like an invisible cord connects us, as if it's always been there, even before we met. I think back to our conversation earlier, when we were at the snack bar, the feelings I couldn't put into words, and I realize that it's as if, on some level, our souls somehow recognized each other the moment we laid eyes on each other.
‼️ "Falling in love can happen in an instant, Larson. But learning how to love someone and how to receive love in return? That part takes a lifetime."
I really enjoyed this book! It's perfect for a lazy day when you just need to chill out on the sofa. I found the characters' back stories interesting and Nell's bereavement with losing her husband was handled really well. The dynamic between the whole group of friends was really fun with great banter, and I felt the story was that much richer for the development of other characters, not just the main couple. The romance was swoony, heated in places, but this is a closed door romcom which I appreciated. Whether Larson and Nell were able to keep to the final wager of the book through nothing but sheer will power did stretch plausibility for me... after all, if those with religious convictions struggle, I'm not sure how the non-religious would fare... So my only criticism is perhaps there should be a whole other book for the 9 or 10 months skipped over before the Epilogue. But I do generally find Epilogues annoying because I'm a 'Happy for now' kind of writer rather than HEA. So that might be just me! Anyway, it didn't impede my enjoyment of this lovely book so I would recommend for a rainy day where you want to stay under the duvet.
This was the second book in the An Unlikely Romance series that I have read now, I ended up starting with Liam’s Proposal, but wanted to go back and read the first two books after loving that one.
Larson and Nell’s book ended up being very sweet. They both had a lot to work through and were really able to bring out a lot in each other.
Nell’s grief was handled beautifully and felt incredibly realistic, it was a big part of her character but didn’t feel like it took up her entire personality. I really enjoyed the different relationships she had with Max, Alex and Liam. They were all very protective of her but still super supportive.
Larson was incredibly charming and extremely understanding when it came to Nell’s feelings.
While I didn’t like this one quite as much as Liam’s book, I still felt that Larson and Nell were absolutely perfect for each other.
A cute story about finding love a second time. Larson is known for being a player and meets his friend’s sister who is off limits. Nell is a widow and hesitant to be in another relationship. When they meet there is an instant spark. Both characters are totally likable. There are boisterous friends, plenty of kayaking, and lots of wagers being thrown around. The author leaves plenty of openings for further stories about the remaining friends. 3.5 stars.
CW: There are no explicit scenes, and this is definitely a closed door romance, but a few situational things that were personal uncomfortable for me. Totally a me thing. Other possible trigger would be Nell is widowed and cared for her dying husband.
I loved this story! I was rooting for Larson and Nell from the very beginning, and the book did not disappoint. The banter is sassy and swoony. The kisses are sweet and steamy. And the relationships between the characters kept me in it for the long haul. Highly recommend.
This book was the perfect mixture of romance and humor. I couldn't put it down. I felt like it was a very real life story and I very much appreciated that it was a good romance without any vulgarity. Can't wait for the rest of the series! Especially excited to hear about Liam and Bree!
Thanks to the author for letting me read this story in exchange for my honest views. This was a story about two people letting go of their baggage and starting a new chapter in their romantic life. That part I could relate with and seeing that unfold was of interest. Unfortunately, both characters were also super sporty and ultra competative which was far less engaging. The supporting cast were entertaining and I'm sure will have their own stories told in due course.
In short, the story was ok. It just seemed a bit flat at times.
An impossible wager 💰 and an undeniable attraction ❤️. This book was so fun and full of hilarious 😂 moments, fights 🥊 , and heart melting kisses 💋 .
Nell. Widowed at a young age 😔 , she is struggling to feel love— or any emotion— again 💔 . That is until she meets Larson who sets her face and heart on fire ❤️🔥 . But he has a record 😖, one she doesn’t know if she’s comfortable with. Still, the way he looks at her? How could she not fall for him 🫠.
Larson. Can you say PLAYBOY? I love me a good redemption story where the wild child becomes crazy just for that one girl 🥹. Larson has realized that his bachelor lifestyle might now be for him anymore 🍺🍷. But his reputation makes it impossible for him to have a chance with Nell— especially when her older brother is his best friend and declares her off limits 😡
🧼 Because Larson is a playboy, this book has references to his past life and lifestyle of hookup culture 🌶️ . ⚠️CW: grief, death, near drowning, FWB, mild swearing, innuendo, an almost open door scene 🧼
I absolutely loved the growth in this book. The “bros” were hilarious. Liam 😍 I love Liam. Puppy dog ladies man?! And Alex who’s healing his broken heart 💔 . Max, the ideal protective older brother 🥹. Just all of them. Fighting and loving each other through it all.
