Interesting. Yes, Caroline purchases a love potion to gain Darcy's love. However after she pours such in his drink at the Netherfield Ball, what does he do but cross the ballroom, take Elizabeth in his arms and kiss her. Elizabeth has seen Caroline tamper with his drink but as she tastes the remnant of that on his lips she finds herself responding with her own passion to his kiss. Of course, Darcy, knowing everyone has witnessed their kiss declares that they are engaged.

The story now has ODC questioning whether their feelings towards each other, which remain warm, are products of the potion or from feelings which were hidden within them. They also search for the source of the potion as that may help answer the primary question.

Caroline is not done and seeks more help, including a potion to erase Darcy's feelings for Elizabeth. Collins brings Lady Catherine into the story by immediately informing her of events in Herefordshire. And Wickham is not left out of the story.

There are mentions of the other Bennet family members whose traits remain the same but they play minor roles in this variation.

I enjoyed this story.

Caroline’s attempt to use a love potion backfires spectacularly
A cute enough story though it somehow lacked depth

When Caroline Bingley purchases a love potion from a stranger in the woods, she hopes it will finally secure Fitzwilliam Darcy for her.
Unfortunately, she doesn’t love him, just his status and riches.

When she slips the potion in his drink, the consequences are far from welcome.

Darcy takes a drink moments before dancing with Elizabeth Bennet, the woman he secretly adores. The potion overrides his self-control, resulting in a passionate and very public kiss! Droplets of potion on his lips cause Elizabeth to respond in a similar manner.

By their own actions, they are compromised.
Darcy is mortified, Caroline is horrified and Elizabeth is very confused!

Darcy and Elizabeth join forces to discover the cause of such uncharacteristic behaviour.
Meanwhile, Caroline deploys every stratagem, manipulation and misdirection to get rid of Elizabeth and redirect Darcy.

A great novella, with just the right balance of angst, malevolence and romance.
Oh, and Caroline gets her just desserts in the end!.

Caroline Bingley is determined to finally win Mr Darcy's heart - with the help of a love potion. But when she uses the potion at the Netherfield ball something goes terribly wrong and Darcy professes his feelings in an ardent kiss ... shared with Elizabeth Bennet. Due to this compromising situation the two need to marry. But Caroline is not ready to give up and acquires new forces whilst Darcy and Elizabeth try to search for the real reason for their passionate kiss. Will Caroline be successful and become the mistress of Pemberley? Or is there a chance for a love, arisen from a scandal, to lead to future happiness?

The new book by the author Violet King was diverting and very entertaining.

In this book Caroline reaches new depths, she tries to win the master of Pemberley with the help of a love potion. After the potion doesn't work the way Caroline had it wanted, she is more desperate and determined than ever. I found her very entertaining and she was really well written by the author in her desperation. I was only glad that in the end she gets what she deserves and that is definitely not Darcy (hey, that is definitely no spoiler, like me you just want to read this book because of a HEA for ODC 😉).

I like that between Darcy and Elizabeth there are strong feelings and that they are, because of the potion 😉, able to express and experience them. But I can as well understand that they are afraid of these feelings and fear that their relationship is not real but only the effects of the potion. This also explains the struggles they feel when something or someone comes between them and that they instantly question their relationship.

I always like stories in which Darcy and Elizabeth need to work together to uncover the truth and that's what they need to do here as well. They get to know each other better by talking, their actions and because they spend time with their search. And with this they discover that they like each other - apart from the pleasant feelings that their kiss had released - and that they want to live their life together. I was only a bit sad that they needed so long to realize it for themselves.

If you like a scheming Caroline and a love between Darcy and Elizabeth that is founded on a scandal you should definitely read this book

I highly recommend it.

I read a lot of Austen variations but was intrigued by the concept of a mashup between a 'Love Potion #9" story and the classic Pride and Prejudice that I love. I've read a few of Violet King's other P&P inspired stories and was interested to see how it would to mix in a big of the fantastical and magical to make things a little more interesting for my favorite literary couple.

Everything is turned upside down when Miss Bingley, determined as ever to catch Darcy, takes matters into her own hands by purchasing a love potion from a mysterious peddler. She is promised that the potion will help reveal love but of course Miss Bingley is only hearing what she wants to hear and doesn't know she's about to make her own nightmares come true.

When Darcy ingests the potion, he finds himself inexplicably drawn to Miss Elizabeth and in a moment of madness, the two given into a moment of passion that is witness by all at the Netherfield ball. Darcy, still burning with desire for Elizabeth, quickly tells all they are to be wed. Elizabeth is shocked not only at the fire she feels for Darcy but at how quickly things came about.

Darcy and Elizabeth agree to help one another figure out just what happened--all the while trying to decipher if their growing respect, admiration and undeniable attraction is true or just the product of an outside influence. I enjoyed that with this story King allows the readers to imagine what it may have been like if Darcy and Elizabeth could have indulged their passionate sides a little more. It was paintful at times to see how each fought against both their own internal doubts and the doubts planted by other when it came to the legitimacy of their love and relationship.

I don't want to spoil the ending but I will say that this s a fun read with a sweet ending that includes Miss Bingley getting a taster of her own medicine.

made me fall asleep twice

This book was okay, it definitely got better when I hit the 68% mark of the book. But it was hard to get into. Not sure if I’d recommend, but not a horrible book either. I just prefer a book with a bit more spice and intrigue.

Caroline Bingley thinks she has the perfect method to make Mr. Darcy hers, but when she undertakes using it, something goes terribly wrong, at least for her. This is a lovely book, a forced marriage scenario that allows Elizabeth and Darcy to get to know each other during their engagement.

I loved how Elizabeth and Darcy worked together, teased, and learned about each other as they sought out what caused Darcy to act in an uncharacteristic manner. My favorite character in this story was Bingley. I loved how he’s the one who always remains calm and offers sage advice. He helps guide Darcy with the situation he finds himself in and helps to ensure Darcy’s future happiness. He’s also the one who looks out for propriety, making sure that none of the Bennet sisters are allowed to do anything that might further taint their reputation. It was so nice to see Bingley portrayed in this way. And, in the end, it appeared that Caroline Bingley might get exactly what she deserved.

I thought this was a delightful tale, and perfect for the Halloween season, or any time. It was endearing, and filled with warmth, humor. I recommend it.

I received an advanced reader copy of this book from the author. I thank her for her generosity, but it had no effect on this review. All opinions in this review reflect my true and honest reactions to reading this book.

This was a very fun book! It is low angst but was still exciting to read, as I was always wondering what would happen next. Miss Bingley buys a Love Potion to make Mr. Darcy fall in love with her, but oops! He kisses Elizabeth during the Netherfield ball, causing them to become engaged. Both of them are a bit confused how they felt such strong attraction so suddenly, but a few clues lead them to believe that Miss Bingley gave something to Mr. Darcy shortly before the kiss happens. Investigations proceed from there...

Miss Bingley is angry and horrified, and does her best to undermine everything. She complains to the potion seller that it didn't work, and I love that he points out that he told her “my potions do not guarantee love. They merely reveal what lies beneath.” So it worked, by pairing Darcy and Elizabeth & helping them see their underlying attraction.

Lady Catherine and Mr. Wickham also get involved, but the ending is oh, so lovely! I recommend this book. It is very well-written: the characters are fully fleshed out and the descriptions are vivid.

This was a variation on Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice, and I thought it was a little delight. The concept of a love potion was something that I found both endearing and slightly naughty, so I was interested in this.

This book was historical fiction, with a fun, lighthearted feel. It had the sophistication that I would hope for when reading historical fiction, but at the same time, it didn't take itself too seriously, and I didn't feel the need to compare it to the original.

There weren't any spicy scenes in this book, but the romance was still there, and I still felt the chemistry and desire, which is something that I always love as a reader.

This is a variation on a classic, and I think maybe for that reason alone, it may not be everyone's cup of tea, but it brought a little smile to my face, and I thought it was lovely.

Thank you to Booksprout and the author for a free copy to review.

Love potion...or not?

Miss Bingley manages to dose with Mr. Darcy with a love potion...that leads to him kissing Elizabeth in the middle of the Netherfield ball. They become engaged as the only way to salvage the situation but bother wonder what came over them. Both suspect Miss Bingley because of different events that witnessed and end up working together to figure out what is going on. Miss Bingley tries to correct her mistake leading to other issues, along with the arrival of Lady Catherine, who is trying to change Darcy's mind. Several people try to separate the couple and it leads to angst but not a lot. Wickham is up to his usual tricks but is quickly shut down.

I'm not completely sure how I feel abouts this book as it felt awkward for most of it, but that enhanced the storyline instead of detracting from it. It was well written and the plot was well done. If you like slightly magical variation this is a good recommendation.

Passions and potions and nefarious plots, oh my!

Darcy has been tricked into compromising Elizabeth, or has he. Our poor couple need to sort out their true feelings, but others stir the pot with their own selfish agendas. It all seems tilted to fall apart, but thank goodness the angst is short lived!

Happy endings abound, or at least plenty of matches. It is clear who will and who won't be happy. That epilogue! - I almost felt sorry for poor Caroline.

This is an entertaining, quick read. for those who don't need to take their Jaff too seriously, this book is a fun choice.

As a fan of fantasy, I loved the light intrigue of potions and a mysterious figure who seems to know all. Perhaps series potential?

Truly a hoot!

The title is a play on words of the title of the song, "Love Potion Number 9" . And a potion seller is an important secondary character in this JAFF. Caroline Bingley spikes Mr. Darcy 's punch at the Netherfield ball, but it backfires and causes Darcy to publicly compromise Elizabeth Bennet instead.A second potion, combined with a conspiracy with Mr.Wickham, was supposed to break up Darcy 's and Lizzy 's engagement, but ends up just giving Caroline a black eye instead. Will yet another potion finally get Caroline what she wants - or what someone else wants? You will have to read the book to find out! Quite entertaining!

Caroline Bingley purchases a love potion from a mysterious peddler and it seems to work on Darcy. Only he kisses Elizabeth Bennet in the middle of the Netherfield ball, and ends up engaged to her, instead of Caroline. Darcy and Elizabeth are a bit mystified about what happened and investigate together. If Darcy was attracted to her because of the potion, will it last and can they have a happy marriage if the effect wears off? Due to the public nature of their indiscretion, Lady Catherine finds out, obviously, and Miss Bingley may have some further plans.

I enjoyed this fun story which was a quick and easy read. Steam level: kissing.

Can love be created? Can love be forced?

This is a fun and quick read. What can a love potion do?

The plot is very straightforward. Under the pressure of the scandal, Darcy and Lizzy are bound together to find both the truth of the mystery and the truth of their own hearts. Exactly what happened on the dancing floor on the night of the Netherfield ball? Are their mutual sentiments the work of the magical incentive, or the impulse of the moment, or the ardent affections and regards to each other? What follows and what guarantees the felicity and bliss in the relationship?

Find out for yourself!.

A variation full of humor and light-hearted romance

Mr. Darcy scandalously kisses Elizabeth Bennet in the middle of Netherfield ballroom. Elizabeth kisses him back although she is uncertain why she would given how she disapproved of him earlier. He has no choice but to declare himself and Miss Elizabeth engaged and merely taking liberties with each other. What follows is a story involving love potions, a determined shrew, and most importantly, the discovery and revelations of esteem, respect and, ultimately, love between Darcy and Elizabeth. It’s an enjoyable read if only to imagine the probability of potions to induce kisses and love.

Love potion indeed!

This story doesn’t take itself too seriously, and that makes it the perfect way to spend a lazy afternoon. I could just picture the facial expressions of the various characters as one set plotted and conspired while the other tried to understand their emotions and actions. Yes, it was over the top and most amusing because of it.

On another note several of the “reviews” did not make sense and seemed to have been generated by an AI assisted app. Caution and critical thinking are suggested.

So much repetition! I think the author decided to do the hand wave and just ignore the number of days that were passing. Also it’s late November in England. Why do they keep going walking in colorful gardens and even having a garden party?

Darcy and Elizabeth supposedly are working together to find out about what happened at the Netherfield ball on NOVEMBER 26. They discovered that Miss Bingley used a potion but keep on trusting her! Every character was out of character. Darcy let Lady Catherine push him around because of ‘politeness’. Lady Catherine sometimes calls her nephew Mr Darcy?!

This really makes me wonder if the author just published without even reading her work through a second time.

Fun story

Caroline gets a love potion to make Darcy fall in love with her and managed to get it into his drink but he then goes to Elizabeth to dance and suddenly kisses her on the dance floor in public! Elizabeth tastes something sweet on his lips and falls in love. Poor Caroline! Other attempts to change his attraction fail miserably though.
I did enjoy reading this but was confused with the ending - Caroline takes another potion to find love while Wickhams trying to get a portion for an immediate transfer to Brighton. I'm not sure why and if she succeeded!

Caroline Bingley thinks she is clever and a Love Potion will get Fitzwilliam Darcy to fall in love with her. However, it doesn't quite work out that way and Elizabeth Bennet finds herself engaged. The story is well written as our dear couple works through their pride and prejudice while trying to solve the mystery of their strange behavior. As nothing worth having is easily achieved, there are plenty of roadblocks in their path on their way to happily ever after.

Clean Romance. Fan fiction of(Austin’s)Pride and prejudice.
funny, some drama and plenty of laughs.
Miss Caroline buys a love potion from a peddler on the road. she thinks it will be straightforward, but it probably will not be.
Caroline spikes Mr. Darcy’s drink, and then he does something unexpected (for Caroline) Mr. Darcy then kisses Miss Elizabeth!! She kisses him back and He states that they are engaged! … and then the shenanigans begin.

lighthearted and entertaining

Where to find a story that made me think of the movie “love potion number nine.”. It always makes me smile to think that love can be imposed or forced by just adding the right “incentive”. It was entertaining to see all the things happen in unexpected and yet smile worthy ways. I also found Mr. Hurst quite the character with his tongue in cheek comments.

This is such a fine AU retelling of Pride and Prejudice. Miss Bingley deals with a mysterious peddler to dose Mr Darcy with a love potion. However, her plans go wrong as Miss Elizabeth catches his eyes or should I say lips instead. This is fun, light hearted and well written. A lovely read. 4/5 stars

A fantasy, a farce and a romance!

A little magic arrives in Meryton as Caroline buys a love potion from a traveling peddler. Of course, she uses it on Darcy at the Netherfield Ball and all kinds of rash behaviors and exciting moments ensue. Lizzy is witty and smart while Darcy is nicer than canon. Cute adventures with a touch of magic.

It's absolutely delightful when Pride and Prejudice is mixed with the best elements of A Mid Summer Night's Dream. The laugh out loud moments are perfect, and the rest of the story is fantastic without being absurd. 5 Easy Stars!
