My 4 1/2 year old loved this book, and learned some great things about communication as well. I thought it was very well done in terms of what it was trying to accomplish, and I want to buy it for everyone I know!
But: -I would love it if in the second edition, there was an addendum chapter in which Marvel reunites with his mom--that was the entire thrust of the plot, after all! I was waiting the entire book for their emotional reunion! -I didn't really like the school thing. This is a book about respecting and trusting children, but if they hate school and are being bullied, "There are just some things in life you have to do." Ummmm, homeschooling? Unschooling? Online education? Let's explore some other options guys! -There is also some environmentalist propaganda as well. I love nature and am a good steward of my land, but environmentalists (in general) don't respect people's needs and use force to accomplish their agenda. They are the opposite of NVC, and this is an NVC book so ... they don't really go together. -Ditto with the subtle vegetarian propaganda. -Lastly, the fact that the follow up resources and books available for me to buy are not on Amazon is super annoying.
Review from Second Reading:
My six-year-old remembered loving this book when he was four and asked me to read it to him again, which I did. He loved it even more this time, thinking it was even more hilarious than he did last time, and really liking the idea of how to communicate with people in better ways.
