boring as hell. reading this prequel makes me not want to continue the series lol 😭
objectively I know this is not a badly written book that's why I'm giving it 3 stars. but boy did I NOT enjoy my time. I was watching the page count like a hawk because I could not wait a second longer to finish the damn thing
I probably would've enjoyed this more had I read book 1 first. I would've made more of an emotional connection to the characters & had familiarity with the world. (Ironically I thought the prequel would've done exactly that but I was left even more confused instead)
so whoever said to read the prequel first before book 1 was setting me up for failure
Idk why the plot in this couldn't have been included in the first book? As a flashback maybe or just in bits and pieces. Idk how I feel about fmc's first meeting with her mates to be in a prequel. But maybe I'd have a different opinion about this after reading the first book. We'll see if I ever get to that because right now I'm running as far away as I can 🏃🏽♀️➡️ I hope I'll eat my own words and this ends up being the best series to ever exist tho

This novella did exactly what it was meant to do, hook me and leave me wanting more, which I absolutely do. I love the way the magic works here ..the shifting, the mating it all feels so unique. More than once I caught myself thinking, “Okay, that’s different… and I like it.”
I cannot wait to dive into book one and keep the story going. I love me some why choose, I love me some shifters, and I can already tell there are going to be so many layers to peel back. And judging by that title, I am more than ready to dive into these five feral men.
Also, I have to shout out the audiobook because wow. Duet narration and an incredible cast, the narration didn’t just tell the story, it pulled me into it. I love when why choose has a full cast, it just does something to me. 10/10 audio performance. 👏🏻

I’m coming on here to scream at you politely and as calmly as possible that you need to jog, run, sprint, hurtle yourself towards this book and read it… IMMEDIATELY.

Ok first of all… this is the very first book in the Her Vicious Beasts series that you need to read to begin. It’s short, it’s an introductory novella, it took me two hours to read. And then I became a wild animal when I finished it and threw myself arms flailing at the next book in the series.
This is a contemporary fantasy, it’s spicy, it’s got shifters, it’s MFMMMM….
I’m rabid for this book… some could say I am actually a vicious beast when it comes to my obsession with this series and it’s only just started!

You mean to tell me that the guy—the one who claimed he hated snakes—immediately believed a snake over his own mate? And that that same guy then decided he wanted to kill his mate…because he now believed that she tried to kill him? Because the snake, a being without honor who Xander claims he has no trust in, told him that’s what happened????

Okay WHAT?! This was only a prequel novella and I am actually hooked and can’t wait to really dive into this series.
We are talking fated mates, but make it a why choose / reverse harem situation. 😬

Very interesting start to this series. I started with the first book before I realized that there was this novella that was recommended to be read first. I’m really glad I stopped to read this one because it gives you a lot of information about the world and how the FMC meets some of the MMCs which is one of my favourite parts. Highly recommend reading this before jumping into the rest of the series and it’s free if you sign up for her emails.

This was great! The audiobook was a full cast one too! I went into this expecting a simple prequel that sets up book #1 of this series. This was actually much more than that. The story didn't feel like a novella. It felt fleshed out, and the stakes were high (which isn't something I've usually gotten with prequels/novellas). The overall setup for the story was pretty interesting, and I'm invested enough to want to know more. Getting to know the guys and clearing up the shenanigans that were built up in this one will be a fun read!

The narrators were wonderful! I love a diverse cast, and it's even better when there is more than one narrator instead of one trying to voice them all.
So good! Savage has to be one of my favorite characters in this story. He kind of reminds me of Ryan Reynolds and his various onerous characters, especially Dead Pool 🤣, but not his Dead Pool looks. I don't know that I've ever read a fated mates romantasy with so much resistance between mates. I kind of get why for Aurelia and for them at the end, but I am puzzled by the others' initial responses.
If I were her, I think I'd do everything in defiance against my father and get my mates on my side. *snicker*
Quick, addictive listen and read! I hopped onto Book 1 immediately following.

Also, you'd think Aurelia would have know right away or had suspicions early on who the prisoners were by these species all being in the same place, as she was aware by the oracle's revelation about her soulbound mates when she was younger.

So this was not what I was expecting!
First off this is such a great set up for the series!
Secondly the narrator did an incredible job bringing Aurelia’s character into sheer unabashed humor with embarrassments. Which is perfect for the sexual events that transcend.
The entire cast did such a great job. I got goosebumps with the low growls of the male beasts. 👀🫣🤭.
It took me a minute to get comfortable with the fact that their world is very similar to ours, I’m used to totally made up fantasy worlds but this was different and I enjoyed it very much. (Pleased)
I will be continuing to the next books in this series. The writing style flows well and you’ll get drawn into it, very compelling.

Book Review
Her Vicious Beasts is a dark, why choose urban fantasy with villainous love interests. I listened to the audiobook, and honestly, I’m not sure I would have enjoyed it as much if I had just read it, the audio production is excellent, with a full cast and duet narration that really brought the story to life. This is the prequel novella and I highly recommend you read this before the first book. It is short sweet and oh so good!!
The FMC is strong and fierce, and I especially loved the banter between her and her mates. This book was really funny at times. It had a bit of a Blood of Hercules feel to it, gritty, mythical, and entertaining. I throughly am enjoying this world and the banter between the characters.

I have to say, if you want juuuuuuust enough to get you hooked (which I’m certain is the point of this as it’s a novella after all) and immediately start the next one, this is the novella for you! I finished this and immediately started the first book because it had a lot of the things I look for in an urban fantasy: morally gray/black MMC(s), complex FMCs dealing with things like trauma, adversity, oppression, etc, and one of the traditional urban fantasy creatures (shapeshifters, werewolves, vampires, witches, demons, etc).
I listened to this novella all in one sitting, and it was really well acted! It features a full duet cast (!!!) and from the looks of the others, continues on with an actor for each MC.
This definitely checks all the boxes above and if the other books in the series are anything like this novella, I’m in!

I just finished the prequel after reading all four books, and I’m so glad I saved it for last.
This little bonus story explained so much about why Aurelia’s mate rejected her, and seeing their first meeting was such a sweet touch. 💕 It tied everything together beautifully without dragging on short, heartfelt, and exactly what I needed after finishing the main series.
I absolutely love this world and this series. 🥰 Highly recommend reading the prequel after the main books for the full emotional impact

Immediately hooked, this was exactly what I needed after a spate of back-to-back disappointing fantasy romances.
HVB is the first time I can recall a not-annoying female protagonist who grew up isolated from people and society. She isn’t dumb; yes she errs, but I didn’t find any of it aggravating.

Oh boy, this is gonna have me hooked!
Not gonna lie, not a fan of the guys right now, but I know it’s not gonna last. It’s a rejected mates situation, so they all hate each other right now, which doesn’t really give me the warm and fuzzies, but I have a feeling I’ll get over that pretty quickly.
I’m gonna start out by saying that Xander is my least favourite, but I’m guessing some good grovelling will happen later on. He’s kind of a dick, but I’m getting the sense that he hates Serpents, hence where some of his hostility is coming from.
Savage gives off the Golden Retriever Psycho vibes, but I’m not sold quite yet. When he hear his POV, we can tell he’s pining, but he also just acts like he wants her for sex, which is not my cup of tea. I guess time will tell 🤷🏻♀️
Scythe is kind of my vibe 🫦
I’m never one to go for the blond guy, but his silent, calculating presence is kinda hot! And he seems to be the only one of the three stooges who owns a brain cell. He’s the only one who can tell that something’s off! How on earth can they see all the little things she did for them, and still believe she would do that? I’m baffled by their stupidity 🤦🏻♀️ and to make that deal?! Yeah I wanna throw hands 🤺
Lyle is only introduced for like 5 minutes at the end, but honestly, I’ve seen the whole “wise professor” thing done a million times in fantasy who chooses, and I always hate those characters. They always bore me AND piss me off at the same time, and I have a sneaking suspicion that this won’t be any different…
And then mate #5 is obviously the poor sap who was stuck in solitary confinement… did he make it out ok? Poor guy is have a ROUGH time. Thoughts and prayers my guy 🫰🏼
All that to say, it’s a great start with an interesting plot and a great cliffhanger, but the MMCs better get good, because so far, the only one I like is the one who doesn’t really speak 😬

If you are curious about this series this little novella is a great intro. I left it excited and ready to dive into the next book which I inhaled.
I really liked how this world was set up without needing excessive explantation. You just keep going and start to figure it all out.

I received a copy of this audiobook from The Nerd Fam and am honored to share this completely honest review!
I thought this was an excellent introduction to the characters in this series and the overall vibe of the series!
I listened to the audiobook and loved that each character is narrated by a different narrator making it that much more immersive. All of the narrators are fantastic!
Aurelia, the FMC, is a relatable character who is as powerful in this world as she is feisty! Not all of her mates are met in this book and I'm excited to see how her relationship develops with those she's met and how she meets her remaining mates!
Being a why choose? romance, I'm sure you're not at all surprised to hear that this is spicy, even as a prequel novella!

This follows Aurelia she is 20 and so close to freedom from her Serpent King father. All her life she has had to hide her powers, who she truly is from the world and forced to hide from her potential mates. She has been summoned by her father to pay back a debt to heal a beast that has been banished to the dungeon. But little does she know that when she steps foot in the dungeon this path will change her life forever.
I’m obsessed and loved this prequel! I’m jumping straight into the first book Her Feral Beasts. I’m so intrigued and love the different orders and the world-building is great. There are just so many answers to unpack and I just need more. I’m excited for what’s to come and the spice was great. I’m so ready for this series!
Also would like to mention I don’t generally gravitate towards Fantasy but if it’s got romance I’ll give it a go, I personally just don’t want to think to hard when reading. But this was easy to follow and I’m fully invested.

I’m obsessed and loved this prequel! I’m jumping straight into the first book Her Feral Beasts. I’m so intrigued and love the different orders and the world-building is great. There are just so many answers to unpack and I just need more. I’m excited for what’s to come and the spice was great. I’m so ready for this series!
Also would like to mention I don’t generally gravitate towards Fantasy but if it’s got romance I’ll give it a go, I personally just don’t want to think to hard when reading. But this was easy to follow and I’m fully invested.

Why are all of the guys actually stupid?! I cannot wrap my head around how this novella starts off with these men being completely clueless. I’m disappointed because I really loved the beginning.
For me, this kind of tension isn’t clever, it’s manufactured just to frustrate the reader. There’s a difference between smart, edge-of-your-seat conflict and dragging characters through immature choices that disrespect their intelligence. Unfortunately, this book falls into the latter. Rather than enjoying the ride, I was left annoyed at the contrived drama.
I think this ruined the rest of the series for me, which makes me sad because the potential was there at first. If you’re looking for thoughtful tension and characters who act with depth, this will not hit the mark.

This was a short little book that seems to be the starting point for the Her Vicious Beasts series. I know very little about the series going in — I’m starting it because a friend told me it’s really good.
Given how small this book is, I was actually pretty impressed by how much was packed into it. There was a lot of information about the lead (who I’m guessing we’ll be following going forward), her family life, and a sprinkle of spice too.
Right now, it’s a little too early to tell if I’m going to love this series, but this was a really solid opener. I do have a few worries about what the main character is going to be like, but I’m going in with an open mind and hoping I’ll be blown away by what comes next!
Would I recommend it? Yes
Would I read it again? Nope
How would I sum it up? A nice little opener for the series.

Her Vicious Beasts is a little less than 130 pages, but did manage to pique my interest. The writing isn’t terrible, and the set up for the story hooked me more than I’d like to admit.
With that being said, it is crazy how frustrated this made me despite being so short. While I did enjoy this a bit, it was hard to not be angry at ALL of the men in this book. Why are y’all so dumb?
I know I should not be sitting here questioning the logistics in a reverse harem novella, but there’s no way I can keep my mouth shut about it. P L E A S E develop some critical thinking skills.
“I don’t trust snakes……… which is why I’m listening to and trusting the word of a man who’s a snake.”
I want to get a megaphone and scream directly into this man’s ear, “HOW THE FUCK COULD THIS POSSIBLY MAKE SENSE?!”
I feel bad for Aurelia because yes, her life sucks, but I hope she grows a spine. Please stop being a doormat for men. And please, PLEASE do not be a doormat for a group of men who share a brain cell.
