A high-profile murder has Sam and her team chasing an elusive killer…
Just back from their anniversary trip to Dewey Beach, there’s no slow roll back to work for the first couple as Sam is immediately thrust into a baffling new case that has everyone on edge. The FBI wants in on this one, and she’s determined to figure out what happened before they can take over her investigation. Avery Hill and his team is also nosing in on the new investigation into Stahl’s nefarious past, forcing her to go on defense as she strives to protect her team and her beloved Uncle Joe from intense criticism.
In the midst of the new case, she’s got to put on her first lady hat for the Canadian Prime Minister and his wife, who are in town for the Cappuano administration’s first State Dinner. Once they get through that event, Sam and Nick will finally meet with Nick’s mother, who's asked for a chance to make things right with her son.
With all of that going on, who has time to breathe let alone give an in-depth interview designed to stop the “illegitimate president” nonsense once and for all?

Review I Liked:State of Suspense is the 7th book in the author’s First Family series which is a spinoff of her earlier Fatal series. Both series feature Washington D.C. Metro Police homicide detective Samantha “Sam” Holland. By State of Suspense Sam has risen to the rank of lieutenant and heads the MPD Homicide Division which has the highest case closure rate in the MPD. She could have been the Assistant Chief of the MPD (a position once held by her beloved late father Skip Holland) but declined the promotion and recommended one of her team members (Jeannie McBride) for the position because Sam wasn’t interested in dealing with the politics of the job or sitting behind a desk and attending meetings all day. Sam thrives on being out there on the mean streets of D.C. catching murderers. In the First Family series Sam has married Nick Cappuano whom through a series of unforeseen events has gone from being his late BFF John a senator from Virginia’s Chief of Staff to John’s replacement after his murder, as Senator, to Vice President to President of the U.S. making Sam the First Lady. A job Sam frequently referred to in earlier books as her “Side Gig.” A gig she reluctantly paid only as much attention to has she had to. By this book Sam has learned to deal with her new reality that she will never again be able to be just Detective Sam Holland even if she refuses to use her married name while working. Wherever she goes she is recognized as the nation’s First Lady. She has learned to accept and actually enjoy being accompanied by her two-member Secret Service Detail during the performance of her job. She sees her older agent Vernon as a beloved almost father-like figure, and has learned to enjoy being chauffeured around with her partner Freddie Cruz, in a luxury Secret Service SUV, in the always heavy D.C. traffic as a perk of her FLOTUS gig. It seems to me that in the previous two books in this series Marie Force took the spotlight off of Sam and focused it more on two other members of her team, Gonzo her second in command and Freddie her partner. In State of Suspense the focus is clearly back on Sam Holland-Cappuano. She’s definitely the star of this book while everyone else plays second-banana. Even when the author briefly switches the focus of the story to Nick the POTUS, it’s still mostly about Sam. How Sam is torn in so many directions between her demanding career where she’s currently trying to solve two high profile crimes, the murder of U.S.A. Tom Forrester a close colleague, and the attempted murder of her friend Special Agent Avery Hill, filling the role of FLOTUS, being a supportive wife to Nick and mother to their three children. Sam is constantly plagued by feelings of guilt and doubt as to whether she’s giving any area of her life enough of her attention. Her colleagues, friends and family must constantly reassure Sam that she is loved, respected and appreciated by all, and doing a tremendous job in performing her many roles. In the previous book while solving a murder for hire, it is discovered that Randy Bryant the son of long time Congressman Damien Bryant was the triggerman. It is also revealed that Congressman Bryant is the head of a vast criminal empire. Also, Nick’s estranged mom Nicoletta is arrested in Ohio for running a prostitution and money laundering scheme putting Nick in a no-win situation. If he does anything to help his mother he’ll be accused of unfairly using his influence. If he doesn’t he’s accused of being an uncaring son because few of the public are aware of just how much Nicolette was never really a mother to Nick. As that book closes Nick and Sam while on a family vacation on the Delaware shore are notified of the murder of USA Tom Forrester and Sam is ordered to cut her vacation short to return to D.C. ASAP to lead the investigation into this high-profile murder. Was the murder ordered by now disgraced Congressman Bryant whom Forrester was investigating, or someone else? My only problem with this part of the story is that it’s never explained why Forrester was parked along Constitution Ave. or how his killer knew where to find him? Then Sam and Nick’s close friend FBI agent and husband of Shelby (Sam’s friend and social secretary) is shot and nearly killed leaving his gym. Are both crimes tied together? The pressure is on for Sam and her team to solve these cases before the FBI comes in and takes them over. As great a person and police detective as Sam is and her father’s BFFs Captain Malone and Chief Farnsworth (Sam’s MPD superiors) are I’ve always felt it rather unflattering the way the trio fiercely fight to keep control of the investigation of certain crimes, only begrudgingly including other law enforcement organizations help, really wasn’t a good look for them. So much for cooperation between law enforcement agencies. And while Sam is trying to solve these two crimes she must deal with an uncooperative (and possibly dirty) U.S. Attorney General Cox, a member of her husband’s cabinet, attend a tea with Canada’s First Lady and later a state dinner for her and her husband in her role as First Lady. Then there’s an arraignment coming up for the man charged with selling Sam’s late brother-in-law opioids laced with poisoned fentanyl and a meeting with Nick’s mom where she says she wants to make amends with Nick. And while all of this is going on Sam must try to find time to be a mother to her children. She also has to deal with the jealousy fueled attitudes of a couple of fairly high ranking women within the department because dealing with the misogynistic “Old Boys Club” isn’t enough. Oh, and then there’s the rising body count of corpses found on the property of now imprisoned Lieutenant Stahl whom twice tried to murder Sam. The last time wrapping her in razor wire and threatening to set her on fire before she is rescued. As each new report of Stahl’s insane level of depravity is revealed Sam’s PTSD threatens to re-emerge. Much is made in this story of the decision to use a judge as bait to smoke out Forrester’s and Hill’s suspected assailant knowing she’s his most likely next target. But if she was to be the killer’s next victim she was going to be his target anyway so to my way of thinking what they ended up doing was just adding an extra layer of protection for her. Not putting her in more danger. And then despite all the talk of how the guy was such a deadly and powerful killer who could easily kill someone with his bare hands, in what seemed almost anti-climatic Sam was able to subdue him in short order without even drawing her service weapon. And what about working all day with a potentially broken wrist and fractured hip from an earlier takedown? What a woman! As this story closes Sam again if reluctantly baths in the glow of public adoration for her extraordinary bravery and ability to capture heinous criminals while also serving as one-half of the world’s most attractive power couple. But just as the rest of the books in this series have done, there is unfinished business for both Sam and Nick to address in future books. Nick’s mom Nicolette still blames Sam rather than herself for her failed attempt at a reconciliation with her son. There’s the murder of someone who was close to Nick to solve, and its possible that his now former A.G. isn’t done stirring up trouble for his administration. Marie Force continues to crank out suspenseful page turning stories in this series.
Wonderful as always, except for the many, many strings left dangling. And the mutual admiration thing got a little heavy handed. In my opinion.
If you've loved previous entries in this series, you'll love this one; if you haven't read previous entries, you should probably start at the beginning, unless you don't mind not knowing what's going on.
Am I the only one who skimmed half the book? I’ve read the whole series, and it used to be pretty good. But the last few books have just had repeated dialog over and over. Let’s discuss the plan, then we tell the plan to this person, then to the next one, etc. She talks to someone on the phone then has to rehash that conversation with someone else and then another someone else. And all the “adoration” as another reviewer referred to it is exhausting. The mystery part was lacking so the story just wasn’t interesting. I may try one more book but if it doesn’t get better I’m out.

5 Star Review of State of Suspense (First Family #7) by Marie Force
AUDIO REVIEW:
I couldn’t wait to listen to State of Suspense and it was another edge of your seat listen and a great addition to the series.
I was so invested in this audiobook and the story that Ms. Force wove, that I listened to it in almost one sitting. Eva Kaminsky did a wonderful job bringing the story to life for me and her voice is easy to listen to as she narrates.
Ms. Force delivered a story that had me on the edge of my seat whilst listening. Adding in the struggles that the team are all going through for various reasons. There were numerous of twists and turns, and I cannot wait to see what happens next with the First Family and their family and friends.
State of Suspense is not as compelling as previous installments in the First Family Series. It is not suspenseful as the crimes have already occurred so there is no tension build-up. Plot holes became tedious to deal with and this reader wished the storylines of Cox and his nephew were fleshed out, which would have led to a deeper storyline. There is not a conclusion to their story arc and character development is lacking. No resolution concerning key players… ending VERY rushed and therefore unsatisfying. There is A LOT of redundancy to events occurring in past installments.
Editing errors are always frustrating. For example, Secret Service Agent Jimmy is away with family for the weekend yet appears in the scene of the news conference on the same day he is “away”.
State of Suspense is mediocre and certainly does not live up to the expectations suggested in the title. It is #7 in the series. This is not a standalone. I recommend readers to start at the beginning of the series as there are A LOT of thrilling scenarios in the previous books.
Another packed installment with Sam and Nick's anniversary trip cut short by the death of Sam's US Attorney friend and colleague. It was very clever of Ms Force to link the case back to one of Nick's top people inherited from the previous President. On top of that, there's a showdown with Nick's mother. As for Sam, I wished she would let people take care of her when she's hurt. I'm not sure how much more physical abuse her body could take!
As usual, there's a bit of a cliffhanger at the end of the book (very sad) that shows us what the direction will take for the next book. All in all, another solid addition to the series.
I had fallen slightly behind in this series, which, if at first it was a bad copy of J.D.Robb's (aka Nora Roberts) In death series, has now taken its own completely different path. By now I have grown fond of Nick and Sam so, no matter how unbelievable the life of this lieutenant who is also FLOTUS remains, I always enjoy them.
What a fabulous story in this wonderful series. As always Marie force gives us great humour drama and love. her unique storylines leave you always wanting more. Once you start this book you won’t want to put it down. I love all the characters in this book as always there are always villains who you love to hate this was no exception. The narrator as always did a fantastic job. her voice is Sam and she makes the book come alive. I cannot wait for the next instalment.
Every time I finish Marie Force's series (Fatal and State of) I think - can this book be better than the last? Yes, she never disappoints with her writing skills. I had such a hard time putting the book down and stayed up half the night reading till I was done. Love Nick and how he stood up to his crappy mother......and love when he fired someone very high up on the ladder. And Sam.....can she get any funnier? The book was fantastic!!
Another good book always by Marie Force I cannot wait for state of Alert to come out. To my turtles they know who they are if you like romance and a little bit of police procedural this is for you but you have to read the other books first. I cannot wait to see where this story goes especially with that ending if you know you know.
Sam and Nick are back, and once again they both have their hands full. Especially Sam, who is juggling her duties as a lieutenant of the homicide division with that of the first lady.
And it's a tricky balance, particularly when she has a high-profile murder investigation to run.
As her friend and colleague, US Attorney Tom Forrester has been found murdered.
Just as Sam and Nick are preparing to host a state dinner for the Canadian Prime Minister.
But Sam isn't letting a small thing like a state dinner get in her way. Especially when the killer strikes again and the case becomes even more puzzling and dangerous.
Yet, Sam isn't the only one having issues. As Nick continues to navigate an inherited presidency. When he learns more disturbing details about a cabinet member. That leaves his team scrambling once again. Not to mention his mum returns desperately looking to make amends.
And with so much going on. I did feel this story had lost some of its usual sparkle. But I can't help but love Sam and Nick and the banter they share.
Furthermore, the murder investigation kept me guessing and the new characters have added something especially after the loss of Skip. But as always Sam is the star of the show for me. As she is such a kick-ass character! And I just adore her attitude and relationships not just with Nick, but Scotty and her colleagues too.
Loved this amazing story in the crazy lives of Samantha and Nick! There are always so many things going on with her job in homicide and his 'minor role' of running the country. Every story keeps me on the edge of my seat and emotionally involved. I love how these characters love and support each other. It warms my heart every time I read a book in this series, that is until the end, when Marie always makes my heart stop. Her cliffhangers are enough to make me scream! But, they are definitely worth it.
-4 STARS RANDOM THOUGHTS -Okay, I’m just gonna say it: this is my favorite book in the entire series. Hands down. No contest. Marie Force absolutely knocked it out of the park with this one. After the last couple of books, where the spotlight shifted to Gonzo and Freddie (which, don’t get me wrong, was fun), it felt so good to have Sam Holland-Cappuano back in the driver’s seat. She’s front and center, doing what she does best—solving crimes, juggling chaos, and being the absolute queen of sass. Everyone else? They’re great, but they’re definitely playing second fiddle here, and I’m totally fine with that. Sam’s the star, and she shines.
I was so hooked on this audiobook that I basically listened to it in one sitting. Eva Kaminsky’s narration was chef’s kiss. Her voice is so easy to listen to, and she brought the story to life in a way that made it impossible to hit pause. I was fully invested—like, cancel-my-plans, ignore-my-responsibilities invested. The story Marie Force wove here is just that good. It’s got everything: tension, heart, and those twists and turns you never see coming. Just when you think you’ve got it all figured out, bam! Another curveball. It’s the kind of storytelling that keeps you on the edge of your seat and leaves you desperate for more.
And can we talk about the cliffhanger? Ugh, Marie Force, why do you do this to us? The ending sets up the next book perfectly, but it’s also so sad. Like, I’m already counting down the days until I can find out what happens next. The First Family and their crew have me emotionally invested in a way that feels borderline unhealthy. It’s like a TV show you can’t stop binge-watching—you know it’s going to wreck you, but you can’t look away.
Speaking of TV shows, that’s exactly what this series feels like. Each book is like a new episode, with its own case to solve, but there’s also this overarching storyline that ties everything together. It’s so well done. You get the satisfaction of a standalone mystery while still being deeply invested in the characters’ personal lives. It’s the best of both worlds.
So yeah, this book? It’s a masterpiece. Sam’s back in the spotlight, the twists are wild, the narration is top-tier, and the cliffhanger has me dying for the next installment. If you’ve been following this series, you need to read this one. And if you haven’t started yet… what are you waiting for? Dive in. You won’t regret it.

𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐒𝐮𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐧𝐬𝐞 is the 7th book in the First Family series by Marie Force, featuring another riveting installment in the saga of Sam and Nick Cappuano. They’ve just returned from their anniversary vacation, only to find themselves mired in the murder of US Attorney Tom Forrester, other friends in peril, political intrigue, more horror on the Stahl front, a State Dinner to host, and a meeting with Nick’s nutcase mom.👀 So much drama, action, and twists and turns were packed into this story that my head is still spinning!😅 We still have all our favorite characters to keep things grounded with their witty banter, tight friendships, and camaraderie in the workplace. I love Sam and Nick in every capacity, whether it’s their romantic moments together, the times when they shine in their leadership positions, or the sweet moments with their kids. They will forever be one of my most favorite fictional couples. Some of the twists in this one took my breath and had me tearing up, and yes that little cliffhanger has me feeling anxious for the next book. This is a series I never miss, and 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐒𝐮𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐧𝐬𝐞 was another phenomenal addition to the series!!
I listened to the audio version narrated by Eva Kaminsky, and she was masterful in her ability to embody so many unique voices, regardless of gender or age. She honestly blows my mind, and is one of my favorite narrators! Normally I prefer dual or duet narration, but Eva Kaminsky can literally do it all! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Another in the First Family series, in which Sam comes back early from a short beach vacation to find that a good friend, Attorney Tom Forrester has been murdered and shortly thereafter, another friend, Special Agent Avery Hill is shot and badly injured. Why? What cases did they share that might indicate why they were targeted? Then there's Nick's mom (not a good one) who demands to see him to make apologies for her bad behavior. Not that Nick and Sam really want to meet with her, but hey? She did ask nicely.
As if that wasn't enough, Sam has to get pretty for the first State Dinner she hosts with Nick, and learns that the Canadian Prime Minister and his wife are cool people. She worried for nothing. But the key issue is can she identify and then capture Tom's killer? And what will Nick do when he learns what the AG is doing behind his back? More kisses in the midst of all manner of police action and political intrigue.
Another one about Sam and Nick dealing with their lives as president of the United States and First Lady investigating murders. This time she investigates the murder of attorney general Tom Forrester and gets deep into the political entanglements making new enemies and friends. At the same time they are hosting a state dinner, new horrific facts about former Leutnant Stahl are uncovered and they have to deal with family issues. In short just another week in the crazy life of Sam and Nick. If you don’t want to get hooked on the series you probably shouldn’t read it. Otherwise go for it. I love the characters. They are hilarious and deep and struggling at the same time. Even though the setting and entanglements are over the top, it’s the perfect escape after a stressful day/ week and the perfect mixture of love, crime and chaos.
So good!! Sam and Nick are a fantastic couple and their romance, friendship and love came through so strongly in this book as a married couple, the First Family, and as supportive friends. Nick had some stand out moments personally with his mom and as the President. Sam had some great professional and personal moments where her leadership and love shone with her team and colleagues. Vernon and her paternal ish relationship/friendship is precious and I love his humor, love and exasperation with her. Freddie was a riot this book and I loved their banter. New characters were added and I hope we see more of the judge and minister. Some of the friends had some terrifying moments, but hopefully that is behind them. The book had a strong ending and one heck of a sad and major cliffhanger. Can’t wait to see what happens next!
I love Sam and Nick!! These are the best stories ever!!! Marie Force has developed great characters for this series! Love Sam's interactions with Freddie! Her team respects her as she juggles being First Lady and a detective! Her friend Tom Forrester is murdered and she and her team just solve the case. After many twists and turns, and a State dinner with the Canadian First Couple, they figure out who is being all the chaotic shootings after looking at cases that Tom,Avery Hill and a judge were involved in. They set a trap, but the suspect doesn't bite. As her secret Service detail is driving her away, she spot him! While stopped at a light, she jumps out and tackles him!! Suspect apprehended. The ending is a cliffhanger for the next installment of the First Family series!! Great job Marie!!!!
I've really enjoyed this series (and the one that leads into it). It was a tough wait to find out what was going to happen with Tom's murder, as we were left on quite the cliffhanger. I will say that I wasn't expecting the turn that the book took and who we took down along the way. I really was expecting it to be someone with a massive grudge against him because of his work. It was also interesting to see how the 1st lady role and police woman role butted up against each other in this story. It's cool that Sam kept her job and I love that in this world it's something that has been able to be figured out. I'm not sure how they have enough time in their day for everything that they are juggling and I'm quite impressed by how well they handle it all.
The ending really did hurt my feelings and I'm very interested to see how it plays out in the next book.
I can’t believe it’s taken me this long to write my review for State of Suspense (First Family #7) and the only excuse I have is I found it hard to put words to paper on a book that stayed with me long after the final word was read. I’m not going to write a review full of spoilers, I’m just going to tell you my feelings on this well written story. This is a great addition to the series and from the first page you are kept on the edge of your seat. There are twists and turns you don’t see coming and you are left excited for what’s to come next for the First Family and their friends. I love this series, I love Nick and Sam and their family but it’s the loyalty and the camaraderie of their friends and work colleagues that add extra depth to this series. I’m now patiently waiting for Christmas Day and the next release in this series.
There’s an overwhelming stench of a malfeasance platter here for Sam’s cases bring her back from vacation early. Ex-cop Ramsey is desperate to clear his son’s name and actions; more of jailed cop Stahl’s gruesome crimes are uncovered; the knotty murder for hire cover-up involving a congressman has new info; the bewildering murder of US attorney Tom Forrester is still a puzzle and it’s all capped off with the alarming shooting of SAIC Avery Hil.
These healthy threads brought some closure and gave new life to two of Nick’s past dramas. Though the outing was full of tasty bits, this reader wanted a juicier stand-out piece in the mix. To my taste, a lot of the read felt fresh, during the read but when it was done, it felt like filler. Good and interesting but filler nonetheless. Rating: 4.25stars
These books are so good! They should be top cop mysteries and be best sellers in that regard as well as romance. Sam’s crew is sharp and her team is top notch. These stories are exciting and action packed. No one is above the law in Sam’s town. This murder and attempted murder hit very close to home as Sam continues to juggle her life as First Lady and her job as the Lieutenant of Homicide in our nation’s capitol. Unraveling the secrets of Nick’s Attorney General and a criminal family from Kentucky. A state dinner and an unwelcome revisit with Nicoletta are only some of the loose ends Sam has to tie up. Kudos to Marie Force for once again giving us a story we cannot put down!
Could there be one book in the series that didn't have Stahl & Ramsey in it. It's time to put them both to bed!.
A book in the series without it involving one of their old or new friends would also be refreshing. Someone in "their family or one of their people" is always being hurt or killed. I am sure there are other crimes that could be investigated. It's repetative.
The smart-aleck repertoire between Sam and her staff -especially Freddie is getting stale. Once in a while is fine but it pervades the story along with the "adoration" of practically all who work with her. An average book in the series, Sam "gets" the killer and of course there is a cliff hanger or teaser for the next one.
State of Suspense is book 7 of the First Family series by Marie Force. This book takes Samantha into the world of criminals once more even as her team prepares for the state visit of the Canadian President and his wife. She is more nervous about the tea party she has to attend with the President's wife than with looking for the murderer of their friend and the US Attorney Tom Ferguson. However, with the help of her friends, she manages to execute both events with skill and bravery. Just as she begins to make some progress on the death of Tom Ferguson, someone tries to kill her friend and Special Agent Avery Hill. Who is doing the killing and why? This book is just as good as all the rest of the series. It is hard to wait for the next book to come out.
