When I reviewed Dave Meltzer's Wrestling Observer Complete Collection 1989 book last week, I made mention of the fact that '89 was the year in which I began following weekly WWF programming. By 1993, I was far down the rabbit hole of not only the WWF but other pro wrestling companies.
Despite that, I was still two years or so off from reading my first issue of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, so I found myself - once again - happy with Dave Meltzer and company's decision to release the entire back issues from 1993.
'93 is one of my favourite periods as a pro wrestling fan. It was the year I went to my first WCW and WWF events.
I went to see WCW's event in the Cardiff International Arena on October 26th of that year. A big news story occurred a few hours after that show because - after travelling from the Welsh capital to Blackburn - Sid Vicious and Arn Anderson found themselves in a hotel room fight which made the national news.
It was Dave Meltzer's coverage of that brawl I initially looked up when I picked up my copy of this collection. I expected something in-depth and was not let down.
Over in the WWF, the biggest story was the steroid scandal which saw Vince McMahon indicted. He would win his court case a year later. Everything that happened - during '93 - is covered in this collection.
Another WWF item which played out in '93 was the departure of Hulk Hogan from the WWF and Vince McMahon's decision to find an heir-apparent in Lex Luger. With hindsight, it was fascinating to read about the WWF marketing machine pushing Luger to become the number one babyface, post-Hogan, in the company. It ultimately led nowhere because the fans regarded Bret 'Hitman' Hart as their top guy.
We'd see the Luger experiment fail when Hart was awarded his second WWF Title at WrestleMania X, but - seeing as that was in March of 1994 - the conclusion to that story will be read in the 1994 book if it ever gets published.
Just like I wrote in the review for 1989 - these books are a must for anyone interested in the history of pro wrestling because everything from the periods in question are documented by Meltzer's excellent reporting.
